  1. rpvdwel scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

    Beautiful pink color
    • Nose
      Peat, smoke and fruit.
    • Taste
Firmly, smoke a lot and then peek a little sweeter and taste some wine
    • Finish
      Not very long and smoky

  2. markjedi1 scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Very, very nice Finlaggan. Looking at the price/quality ratio, this is a winner.
    • Nose
The nose shows lots of earth, grapefruit, lacquered bacon and rhubarb. A hint of mashed potatoes. On the nose, this is quite lovely and in fact reminds me a bit of Laphroaig, while most people think Finlaggain is Lagavulin. The aromas are nicely integrated, so to speak.  Great nose!
    • Taste
It is nicely oily, mildly spicy and quite salty. After that first spicy, salty surge the red fruit returns in large numbers. Rhubarb, but also strawberry and even litchi. Soot and ashes appear. This truly is lovely. But now I do think it’s Lagavulin, sorry…
    • Finish
The finish is medium long, sweet, smoky and dies a salty death.

Yes, I am a fan of Finlaggan. Especially the price-quality ratio.
With this whisky the port can still be tasted very well through all kinds of other flavors.
    • Nose
      89 89
full of fragrance, you can smell the Port and through it with a right mixture of other fruits and smokiness
    • Taste
      87 87
      Very full of flavour. Delicious.....
    • Finish
      89 89
nice aftertaste where more fruit flavors are revealed. The smoky lingers well.
      a real Islay

  4. niggy1813 scored this whisky 87 points Expert Junior

All in all a lot of campfire smoke completed with red fruits that give it the certain something. So, for an unnamed Islay whisky it's one of the better for me and I like this whisky very much. But for a better ranking it should be more mature and the beautiful fruits have to be more significant.
    • Nose
      86 86
Cold ash smoke meets red fruits. Lovely. Although the smoke overpowers the fruits, the composition is recognisable and promises a lot.
    • Taste
      87 87
The fruits fight forward. Plum, raisin, grape but also some sour notes. All nicely combined with smoke that gets warmer.
    • Finish
      88 88
Warming, very smoky, powerful and long, gentle completed again with the fruits.

  5. Issie did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

    • Nose
Rather cold smoke, ash, slightly sour, lemon, very light orange, cherry, Mon Cheri, a few nuts, some wood
    • Taste
Honey, cherry gum, lemon, some chocolate, wood, ash, smoke, some pepper

  6. LDB scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Simple but tasty. Reminiscent of Caol Ila DE, but clearly port on the palate, although the influence of the latter is not very strong. Very balanced, overall an Islay NAS of the more successful variety.

  7. Don Cassi scored this whisky 75 points Expert Senior

On the nose, medium-strong warm (association of bacon) and maritime smoke and fruity port aromas of red fruits. In addition, slight herbal notes (Lagavulin?).

Immediately burnt wood and alcoholic sharpness in the mouth. Behind it, the impressions from the nose are reflected.

Metallic-bitter finish and very ashy (Caol Ila?) With a sweet-fruity background.

Young and rough smoker, who would have done better with fresh barrels and a longer storage time. Above all, the departure prevents a higher rating.

    Grade: 2

  8. aw-home scored this whisky 78 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
Phenolic peat smoke with maritime and vinous notes, tart strawberries, honey, ash and smoky aromas.
    • Taste
Peat smoke with maritime and vinous notes, strawberries and honey.
    • Finish
Long with maritime and vinous notes, ash, citrus, peat smoke and honey.

  9. keizerjos scored this whisky 79 points Expert Senior

Beautiful, subtle with some smoke - not as nice as the ever-improving Ledaigs that I have in the cupboard. I want more of that peat; the portwood ripening does not really add much spectacle. The price is, in my opinion, a decade higher than it should be.

On the nose this whisky has scents of plums and a good amount of peat. Smoked bacon and a little medicinal reminiscent of the scent of a Lagavulin or perhaps even more like a Laphroig. As the name of the whisky suggests, it has matured in port barrels.

The first sip many sweet flavors and a delicious good thick smoke flavor.

Raisins, pepper, leather. A dry finish is added quickly.

Raspberries and strawberries also clearly come to the surface. Although I often like peated whiskys I like the winter, I also like them in the summer with those sweet flavors.

A perfect balance between delicious smoke and sweets.

These flavors are reflected in the aftertaste. An oily taste, later sweetness but especially delicious thick smoke

    Balance (21)
Youth is not badly hidden (84)
    • Nose
Sweet, strawberries and smoke ... fruits and slightly salty air, wet paper, caramel (21)
    • Taste
      Fruit, Ash, Salt (21)
    • Finish
Plums, salt, iodine, ashes ... berry acidity ... not understandable grain notes (21)

Already much better than the previously "enjoyed" Old Reserve - nice fresh-red-fruity + neat smoky, a My sour, overall tasty, but looks a bit thin despite 46%.

  13. Cubey666 scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

Quality whisky for a fair price.
On the nose red warm forest fruits with some crisp smokiness. On the mouth a bit single minded, with some peat. The finish is moderately long.

    great daily dram.

The smell is very sour and musty. That is why it scores very low. In the beginning you smell the peat, which is quickly overpowered by sour odors.

Thinking of the smell you taste a whole other whisky. He even surprised me. That sweet taste certainly did not smell. I also liked the oil-like taste to taste.

The finish was not wrong, but he disappeared very quickly. Only the oily liquid remained around the tongue for a bit longer.
    • Nose
      78 78
      Peat
      port wine
      Raisins
      Wood
      Kiwi
      Green (sour) apple

A sour stale air. Not my favorite smell. The peated taste helps the score up.
    • Taste
      84 84
      port wine
      Peat
      Oil-like
      Kiwi
      Red fruit
      Caramel
      Licorice

      Very different from the smell.
    • Finish
      83 83
      Sweet
      port wine
      Peat
      Red fruit

      An oil-like finish.

A nice finish, which unfortunately disappears quickly.

  15. Dre73 scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
Smoke and peat, but also fruity, grapes, port influences perceptible. Plums too, and spicy.
    • Taste
Peat, smoke, spicy, cinnamon. Firm and full, light pepper, honey, prunes and again some grapes.
    • Finish
Strong, light pepper, reasonably long. Tobacco a little stronger, and some sweet, honey.

  16. Calmar scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Not bad port-finish, light, cheerful, good combination of phenolic base, bourbon barrel and wine finish, all components are visible, distinguishable and harmoniously combined without interfering with each other.
    • Nose
Open, wet, peat and ash, red wine, dried grapes, charcoal embers filled with rain, grease and vegetable notes, fried potatoes.
    • Taste
Dense, peppery-oily, tart oak, carpenter's workshop.
    • Finish
Light, fresh, spicy oak, port of ruby, fruit compote, lollipops.

  17. Oldpultnie scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

The second whisky after the Raasay with a more pink rosé wine colour.
    • Nose
      Peat, smoke and sweet fruit.
    • Taste
Starting hot, followed by a very nice sweet touch and ending with a bit salty taste on the lips.
    • Finish
Short finish, doesn't leave a lot behind except the need to poor out a second one.

  18. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Strong smokers with Portreifung are actually whisky, which I usually go out of the way. Here I have to say that with the exception of the New Make notes in the nose (at least that's how I always feel), the whisky is actually delicious. Not overly complex, but delicious. Strong peat with some port sweetness.
    • Nose
Fat Islay smoke, docks, bouillon cubes, a subtle Nussigkeit, quite a fruitiness, slightly vinous, light New Make associations.
    • Taste
pleasant strength, yet pepper, a gummi bear-like fruitiness combined with gum and plenty of peat.
    • Finish
peaty, light sweet aromas flash on, a little gum, but not so strong, rather peaty and a bit sooty and a subtle bitterness. Longer, longer.

  19. Achany scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

a lot of red fruits, grapes, sweetness on the nose with a hint of smoke. the taste is a fine combination of the port influence with all ist sweetness and some salty, dry smoke. finish rather short but still all right. wonderful dram!

    • Nose
      Delicious, turf, wine. Red fruit
    • Taste

    blind tasting
    Class balanced drops.
    Tip: Wine-barrel aged Longrow
    • Nose
At first slightly smoky, later very clear. Slightly tart, but matching wine note with aromas of redcurrants, gooseberries and strawberries with quite fresh character.
    • Taste
Over the campfire smoked fruits. Slightly alcoholic and quite sweet.
    • Finish
      long, warm and ashy.

even with this bottling, the 46% and the port wine barrel do the Finlaggan good; the nose promises a great Portwein malt, the taste and finish can not quite redeem.
    • Nose
Red wine mixes with camp fire smoke, sweet cherries and dark red jam; dark chocolate and a very intense sweetness
    • Taste
nice oily and again red wine; a subtle tingle with subtle smoke, dark apples and jam again; Churches and dark berries; sweet Honey
    • Finish
medium; light to medium smoke; nice sweet oak; again dark fruits and chocolate; Wine gums; getting dry

  23. Falnor scored this whisky 82 points Connoisseur

    From the first
nosing clearly dominated by peat. Nice taste, rich and full. If you like peat,
you''ll be fine. It doesn't stand really apart from other good islays.  The port version is fresh, more fruit,
especially red apples and berries. The best part is the initial taste. The port
lost the battle from the sherry on the palette, however it's still less common.A good and
aged peated whisky costs a lot. This baby is nice, perfect for a daily dram and
the finish makes it bang for your buck!
