Whisky Reviews for Port Charlotte 2001

15 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 90.08 points

  1. HammerHead scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

A good Port Charlotte, but not as much smoke as I would have expected. Also it has a little too much of a bitter/dusty wood feel about it to justify a 90 points score in my book.
    • Nose
      89 89
General sherry sweetness, brown sugar, salty, nutty, smoked wood shavings, quite a dusty experience, some oak varnish, leather polish and cinnamon. I'm also picking up a caramelized indistinguishable fruit note.

It's an appealing nose but it also remains a bit closed. Water and time do not improve this a lot (I gave it a good 30-45 minutes).
    • Taste
      89 89
Wood smoke, charcoal, black pepper, sea salt, tobacco leafs, some cocoa, liquorice and a little cherry and blackberry fruit juice.
    • Finish
      87 87
Long: charcoal, lots of black liquorice, a subtle sweet and sour fruitiness and just a little too much wood bitterness.

  3. Dre73 scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

Beautiful whisky, with some nice sherrycask influences and some smoke.
    • Nose
      91 91
Full nose, rubber, leather, autumn forest. The coffee/cappuccino, prunes, caster sugar, some bonfire smoke on the background.
    • Taste
      90 90
A little pepper, lot's of licorice, coffee, some chocolate. Intense, full and warming. Now some honey sweetness as well.
    • Finish
      90 90
A little pepper, some cigar tobacco, some bitterness, strong coffee and very pure chocolate. Leather again. Long finish.

Urgently needs some water. But with water, the bitter notes come to the fore.
