Low Robertson & Co., a distillers and blenders company, was founded in 1812 and later absorbed by the DCL group.
She owned the Port Ellen distillery.
The distillery was built in 1825 by AK McKay & Co., passing in 1836 to John Ramsay.
He was a well-known figure in the Scotch industry at the time, as well as being parliamentary delegate for Stirling and President of the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce.
Gifted with great intuition, he pioneered the export of Whiskey to the United States, with important cargoes transported directly from the distillery to American ports.
His distillery was the first to adopt the sealed glass box for alcohol quality control, officially adopted by Customs and Excise several years later.
It was also John Ramsay who persuaded the government to allow aging Whiskey to be tax free.
He himself invited Robert Stein and Aeneas Coffey to carry out part of the research work that gave rise to the patented alembic at Port Ellen.
After his death the business passed to his wife and later, in 1906, to his son, who in 1920 sold it to Port Ellen Distillery Ltd.
In 1925 the latter entered the DCL and being liquidated in 1927 the distillery first passed under the control of John Dewars & Sons Ltd and James Buchanan & Co. Ltd. after which it was definitively closed.
It reopened, totally modernized, in 1967 under license from Low Robertson & Co. Ltd. to close definitively a few years later.
All Port Ellen Single Malt reserves available at the time were destined for blending.
These were the brands that enjoyed Port Ellen's contribution: Ben Cally; Dormy; Fiddler; Loretto; Gray Label; Old Guns.
Blended Whiskey now rare and particularly sought after by Port Ellen enthusiasts.

Rare magnificent 80s bottle still with a content of 75 cl. as competing in a bottling of that period.
The bottle is perfectly preserved in every respect.
The screw cap is perfectly sealing and has allowed to maintain the level at the neck connection.
The alcohol content is 40% Vol.
Two more words about the importer are necessary.
A small adhesive label is placed at the foot of the main label and announces that the exclusive importer for Italy was Wax & Vitale Divisione BEMA Lic. UTIF GE N ° 139.
