  1. hs305 scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

[November, 2016]  I emptied a bottle together with friends that I bought for 56 Euro in November, 2016.

In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 90.  My notes state a very complex and rich sherry profile with slight sulphurous notes (bearable). Without the sulphur I would have rated it 92+ points.  Very, very quaffable...

So far I haven't been able to do anything with Aberlour. Both the 12yo and 15yo didn't give me much. With the third Aberlour attempt it worked, the A'Bunadh can actually do something. Complex nose, varied taste, plus barrel strength, unfiltered and uncoloured. Nice thing.

Without water: the alcohol stings your nose. You can make out sherry and something meaty. There has to be water in it. With water: open up nicely. Orange zest flows towards the nose, jam made from black cherries. Makes a very rich and full impression. Leather and tobacco notes come along with slightly bitter spices.
    • Taste
      87 87
Very chocolaty start, with a clear nougat content in the chocolate. Oranges are very dominant, as well as a mixture of nuts, hazelnuts, walnuts and almonds. Full and creamy on the tongue. After a while, the chocolate turns into cocoa, then into coffee beans. The fruits darken, oranges go, plums and raisins come. Oak sneaks in, bitter herbs crowd behind.
    • Finish
      86 86
Long finish, still creamy / creamy, with oak and recurring orange notes.

The influence of the sherry cask was clearly a lot less than on earlier batches, but it remains one helluva dram. The price may vary though… from 50 to 70 EUR.
    • Nose
The nose is honeysweet and reminds me more of a GlenDronach than an a’bunadh at first. I get loads of toffee, white chocolate, cranberries and rose water, drenched in orange juice. But there are hardly any of the typical dark sherry hints such as plums, dades or raisins. Nevertheless, this is a very inviting and lovely nose, do not get me wrong. But surprisingly different from what I expect from an a’bunadh.
    • Taste
On the palate it is – obviously – a big boy. The high ABV makes me gasp for breath. Again cranberries and oranges, upholstered with nutmeg, pepper and some cocoa. Good, but not overly complex.
    • Finish
The finish is medium long and offers some peach.

I'm finding the sulphur a little strong on the palate. Not sure how much I like this. Not bad but not great either. It's kind of abrasive from being to end on the palate.
    • Nose
      86 86
Rather light and unimpressive. Hints of chocolate notes.
    • Taste
      86 86
Thick and viscous and a little hot.
    • Finish
      85 85
Even with water still a little hot.

  5. Marko_I did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

As usual from a'bunadh - strong, full-bodied sherry board with dilution reserve, even with meanwhile 59 € priced still in the green area.
    • Nose
dry, dark, spicy sweetness, Storck giants, cocoa, dried figs, even with water remains spicy sharpness (cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom), tobacco, leather, some burned match
    • Taste
intense, dry, medium pungent, yet somewhat velvety, dark chocolate, molasses, a hint of dark berries / wildberry jam, orange peel, cinnamon, cloves, pepper
    • Finish
long, dry, velvety-spicy, some cough syrup / herb bitter

The same old trick still works pretty well, producing an aromatic whisky which tastes good at young age. It lacks a bit of complexity compared to some earlier batches, even though it's still tasty.

A bit harsher in the mouth compared to batch 53, but their profiles are rather similar. I miss the mocha note in this one though.
    • Nose
Mainly cranberry. Some toffee, rose hip and orange. With water some nutmeg.
    • Taste
Cranberry, chili pepper, orange, marshmallow and caramel. The orange becomes stronger when adding water. Then also some mint.
    • Finish
Goji berry and caramel. Then strong cocoa. Eventually peach.

  7. Saftkenner scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

A little fresher on the nose than batch # 49. More impetuous on the palate, somewhat bitter and astringent. There are also a few more lighter colored dried fruits here. Overall not that lovely, but also great.
    • Nose
Diluted to 54%. Very well integrated alcohol. Dried orange slices, cinnamon, juicy cherries, prunes, vanilla ice cream with raspberry syrup, raspberry brew, rum raisins, strong oak spice.
    • Taste
Powerful start, lots of tannins. Clearly astringent.
Blood orange, rum pot, dried apricots, dates, heavily roasted espresso, dry wood that has been softened again after a heavy downpour, candied pineapple.
    • Finish
Medium long and slightly bitter. Old damp wood, cherries, marzipan, pineapple.

  8. Dramming Dutchman scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

For it's price this is "bang for your buck", lovely dram which kan use some water because of the high alcohol. With few drops it opens up more.
    • Nose
      89 89
Even without a drop of water it has a good nose but after adding few drops it opens up, lovely.
    • Taste
      88 88
As all A'bunadh it is a mouth full of taste.
    • Finish
      89 89
Long finish, after half an hour I still tasted this whisky.

Liquid orange soft cakes. Tobacco, Black Forest cake, raspberries, raisins, chocolate, coffee. Very nice, just IMO the 60 +% don't suit him.

Some may enjoy it at Full Strength but it really improves when it's dilluted to about 46-48%.
    • Nose
      85 85
    • Taste
      80 80
Follows the nose + peaches, zesty, rose hip and a bit paper-y
    • Finish
      90 90
Long and full-bodied with a strong alcohol note.
