A little fresher on the nose than batch # 49. More impetuous on the palate, somewhat bitter and astringent. There are also a few more lighter colored dried fruits here. Overall not that lovely, but also great.
    • Nose
Diluted to 54%. Very well integrated alcohol. Dried orange slices, cinnamon, juicy cherries, prunes, vanilla ice cream with raspberry syrup, raspberry brew, rum raisins, strong oak spice.
    • Taste
Powerful start, lots of tannins. Clearly astringent.
Blood orange, rum pot, dried apricots, dates, heavily roasted espresso, dry wood that has been softened again after a heavy downpour, candied pineapple.
    • Finish
Medium long and slightly bitter. Old damp wood, cherries, marzipan, pineapple.

  4. Dramming Dutchman scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

For it's price this is "bang for your buck", lovely dram which kan use some water because of the high alcohol. With few drops it opens up more.
    • Nose
      89 89
Even without a drop of water it has a good nose but after adding few drops it opens up, lovely.
    • Taste
      88 88
As all A'bunadh it is a mouth full of taste.
    • Finish
      89 89
Long finish, after half an hour I still tasted this whisky.

The a'bunadh is simply a guarantee. You really don't have to say much about that, a strong part that also offers a lot of scope for experiments with water - 09/25/2020
    • Nose

The anticipation was there, after 4 years finally another A'bunadh in the glass. Great sherry aromas unfold and you can literally smell the dryness, dried fruits, raisins, chocolate, pocket coffee, raspberry jam, currant, pomegranate, very fruity bouquet as expected, jelly-like berries without end, the nose is very powerful and strong
    • Taste
      89 89
Very dry, immediately oily sweetness and a lot of malt, warms the entire mouth, tingles very strongly on the tip of the tongue but is anything but unpleasant, sticky, numbing, very intense sweetness, chocolate, first very dark and gradually becoming lighter with whipped cream candy, the barrel wort follows, maple syrup, espresso without sugar
    • Finish
      88 88

Ne a piece of dark chocolate. The color of this NAS is rather dark. That chocolate certainly helps with the first sip, because 60%, well, say it yourself, everything will taste like each other. The Glenfarclas 105 comes to mind. The sherry is more subdued with this than with the Irishman. Again, not that bitter mouth-contracting dry that many sherry casks. certainly on CS, often have. I think the 60% should be diluted, but I don't want that now. I still have a batch of 48 samples, which I will test with water.

The A'bunadh are just awesome! For almost 60 € and always about 60 turns you can (not) do anything wrong. The PLV benchmark for a "sherry bomb".

I'm finding the sulphur a little strong on the palate. Not sure how much I like this. Not bad but not great either. It's kind of abrasive from being to end on the palate.
    • Nose
      86 86
Rather light and unimpressive. Hints of chocolate notes.
    • Taste
      86 86
Thick and viscous and a little hot.

Nice and intense one again. Not the best batch of A'Bunadh I've had, but still very good.
    • Nose
      89 89
Fruity, leather, raisins, pretty prominent alcohol. Honey, red fruits, prunes, some notes of coffee.
    • Taste
      88 88
Strong, pepper, very fruity, prunes. Honey, chocolate, leather, coffee. Very intense body.
    • Finish
      87 87
Still a little pungent, long finish, red fruits, honey, sweet. Marsipan now too.

This is a good one, folks. This batch isn't so fruity, just a monstrous feat of engineering. It's surprisingly easy to over-dilute though.
    • Nose
Heavy sherry, creamy vanilla, spices, dark fruits, orange, dark chocolate, coffee, and faint sulfur vitamin.
    • Taste
Thick and syrupy. With an intense attack of sharp sherry and coffee. Spices, vanilla, and honey. It's a symphony.
    • Finish
Intensely dying, but also long and richly sweet. It's a long, slow fade of the palate. Stupidly well-balanced.

The influence of the sherry cask was clearly a lot less than on earlier batches, but it remains one helluva dram. The price may vary though… from 50 to 70 EUR.
    • Nose
The nose is honeysweet and reminds me more of a GlenDronach than an a’bunadh at first. I get loads of toffee, white chocolate, cranberries and rose water, drenched in orange juice. But there are hardly any of the typical dark sherry hints such as plums, dades or raisins. Nevertheless, this is a very inviting and lovely nose, do not get me wrong. But surprisingly different from what I expect from an a’bunadh.
    • Taste
On the palate it is – obviously – a big boy. The high ABV makes me gasp for breath. Again cranberries and oranges, upholstered with nutmeg, pepper and some cocoa. Good, but not overly complex.
    • Finish
The finish is medium long and offers some peach.

Well, the conveyor of sherry monsters continues the production, this batch is quite good, not very sweet, rather neutral, does not strike with a variety of derivatives, but it is saturated and powerful enough.
    • Nose
Thick, dry, spicy wood, dried fruits, tea (dry), furniture varnish, a box of cigars, pipe tobacco, dried mushrooms, pruned grapes.
    • Taste
Powerful, rich, burnt rusks, spicy oak, light pepper, dried fruits.
    • Finish
Spicy, dried fruits, light peppery notes, cream tones, burnt rusks, fudge, oak.

[November, 2016]  I emptied a bottle together with friends that I bought for 56 Euro in November, 2016.

In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 90.  My notes state a very complex and rich sherry profile with slight sulphurous notes (bearable). Without the sulphur I would have rated it 92+ points.  Very, very quaffable...

    From heaven , this whisky.
    • Nose
Aroma's from different spices, pralines and strong oranges with deep  rich tones from Oloroso sherry.
    • Taste
Intens, oranges, black berries, dried fruit, ginger, dark chocolate, with sherry and oak. Firm and strong body.
    • Finish
Long and intens. Bittersweet nuts, and exotic spices , pure, dark chocolate again, and lovely oaky finish.

So far I haven't been able to do anything with Aberlour. Both the 12yo and 15yo didn't give me much. With the third Aberlour attempt it worked, the A'Bunadh can actually do something. Complex nose, varied taste, plus barrel strength, unfiltered and uncoloured. Nice thing.
    • Nose
      85 85
Without water: the alcohol stings your nose. You can make out sherry and something meaty. There has to be water in it. With water: open up nicely. Orange zest flows towards the nose, jam made from black cherries. Makes a very rich and full impression. Leather and tobacco notes come along with slightly bitter spices.
    • Taste
      87 87
Very chocolaty start, with a clear nougat content in the chocolate. Oranges are very dominant, as well as a mixture of nuts, hazelnuts, walnuts and almonds. Full and creamy on the tongue. After a while, the chocolate turns into cocoa, then into coffee beans. The fruits darken, oranges go, plums and raisins come. Oak sneaks in, bitter herbs crowd behind.
    • Finish
      86 86
Long finish, still creamy / creamy, with oak and recurring orange notes.

  31. Marko_I did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

As usual from a'bunadh - strong, full-bodied sherry board with dilution reserve, even with meanwhile 59 € priced still in the green area.
    • Nose
dry, dark, spicy sweetness, Storck giants, cocoa, dried figs, even with water remains spicy sharpness (cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom), tobacco, leather, some burned match
    • Taste
intense, dry, medium pungent, yet somewhat velvety, dark chocolate, molasses, a hint of dark berries / wildberry jam, orange peel, cinnamon, cloves, pepper
    • Finish
long, dry, velvety-spicy, some cough syrup / herb bitter

  32. wisekyofcourse scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

On the nose, alcohol, tingling sensation, then spices and old fruits, caramelized

In the mouth, THE pleasure of the abunnad'h, it is this surf of ethyl, caught up gradually by fine but tenacious aromas, ranging from leather a little wet, delicate spices, not too much pepper, red fruits, a little maderized, and a slight return of smoke

In the final, a length always pleasant, but quite basic however on the same feelings as in mouth, sign of a young age!

Less transcendent than the oldest I have tasted.
    • Nose
      alcohol!
      spices very marked, very peppery!
strong sherry, more on cooked fruits than macerated ,.
intense wood, dark chocolate too, and some toasted almond kernels.
    • Finish
      long.

    An absolute decent batch.

I won't repeat the classical A'bunadh notes, just say that this one takes Water well.

It is perhaps slightly more simple than the best batches. I think it is the dried fruits that are missing just a but.

But still a really nice batch

    Nose:
Deep sherry with spices. Cinnamon, cardamom. Some old leather and hint of honey.  I rather like it. With water: more spices come forward and more chocolate.

    Taste:
Sweet. Old leather, hints of heater, sweetness of the sherry, some candied sherry's. With water: It's more sweet and more thick sherry tastes are in here. Some sherry's and raspberry's in there.

    Body:
    Full but a bit dry.

    Finish:
Long. A little dry. There is a lot of spices and sherry influence in these. With water they all are still there.

    Price:
It was quite fair I got it for around 45 euro's.

The usual quality we can expect from the A'Bunadh. Very nice balance and a good batch! Good dynamics in nose and taste.

    Score 87-88pts.
    • Nose
Powerfull nose, dried fruits, typical sherry. Spices (cinnamon, nutmeg). Some softer fruits as well (apricots).
    • Taste
Lovely sweet attack, followe by some heat (lots of spices, nutmeg, pepper, cinnamon, cloves). Mouthwarming. Some toffee, caramel and dark chocolate notes coming through as well. The typical sherry notes are there.
    • Finish
Medium to long finish. Little dry but a very nice balanced sweet and spices.

  41. wbarchive_104650 did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

With water this is a really nice, sherry-loaded malt. Delicious. Without water, it is too intense in my nose and taste.
    • Nose
a good dose of dry sherry; dark, sticky raisins and chocolate; spicy oak comes in, always covered in a dark sweetness; Malt mixes with it; the 60% are clearly noticeable in the nose; with water, the sherry comes into its own and a touch of sulfur is added
    • Taste
The alcohol is immediately there; in addition a decent spice and oak comes; Chocolate and raisins; slightly dry; it gets pretty creamy with water; the oak is still there; it gets really dry and now the sherry comes again; Raisins are also included
    • Finish
medium; nice spicy and chocolaty sweet; the oak remains beautiful and long on the palate; in the finish the alcohol is not so present; with water remains the great spice and the oak; but it also show sweet aromas and dark fruits

The same old trick still works pretty well, producing an aromatic whisky which tastes good at young age. It lacks a bit of complexity compared to some earlier batches, even though it's still tasty.

A bit harsher in the mouth compared to batch 53, but their profiles are rather similar. I miss the mocha note in this one though.
    • Nose
Mainly cranberry. Some toffee, rose hip and orange. With water some nutmeg.
    • Taste
Cranberry, chili pepper, orange, marshmallow and caramel. The orange becomes stronger when adding water. Then also some mint.
    • Finish
Goji berry and caramel. Then strong cocoa. Eventually peach.

  43. Thermidor scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

This tastes quite a lot like Glendronach single casks except the old wood and tannins are missing, and certain depth in the body too. Instead of them there is a very strong alcohol note that I think is sharper than usual in A'bunadh. The sherry here is as expected loud as a jet engine, and it gives an impression of a fine whisky when cut with enough water, but there is something a bit superficial to it. Still a better NAS than most.
