Whisky Reviews for Macallan Edition No. 1
5 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 89.16 points
- Haha. Overall score is over 90 points? I guess flippers will flip, collectors will collect. Welcome to the world of average whisky (Macallan) where the color of the box dictates its price, not the actual content. This is probably the best of the Editions (1-4) so far, but that's not saying much.
A bit rough around the edges, but full of spice and wine and smooth, oxidized sweet stuff. // Water helps soften things out.
Interesting. Certainly a lot going on. I think the whole designer cask thing is very eyerolly, but you can't deny the singular and tasty results (cf. Ardbeg An Oa). Brightly fruity on the palate, nutty on the finish.
Spicy and rich and only moderately lingering. // Turns out I definitely don't suggest adding water to this one.
- It feels like a cross between the older earthy sherry 12s from the 90s and a youngish Springbank, which I like a lot! 89.
Rich, warm nose. Earthy farmyard with a hint of rubber at first but that goes away quickly leaving freshly sawn oak with spices (cinnamon and nutmeg) in its place. Very slight hint of sharp sulphite. No real change with water.
Nice rich taste with a slightly oily mouthfeel. Very spicy with cinnamon, white pepper and cloves very much in charge. A little water opens it out a bit bringing together the spices in a warmer less aggressive palate.
Medium finish, quite drying from the tannins in the European oak. Some peppermint in the finish.
