[December, 2016]  I emptied a bottle that I bought for 50 Euro in November, 2016.

    In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 87,5.  I took no detailed notes.

Nose : Lemon , peat and sweet notes. Maltiness with some fresh dough. Apples in brine. Engulfed by peat and smoke.

Palate : starts sweet sugary and honeyed then the peat attack starts. Waves of peat attack your palate , followed by chilly. Big bodied and great impact. Some saltiness on the edges a if seawater enter.

Finish : Long, ashy Peat. As if you’re chewing on a cold cigar. Lovely Islay finish, . Some coffee notes also.

Now let’s compare this CS Caol Ila to the “official” Caol Ila Original Cask Strength I’ve tasted a while ago with the rest of the CI core range, just to make it interesting. Will they differ? Will they be similar?http://whiskyisrael.co.il/2010/07/21/port-askaig-cask-strength/

    Note by Speciality Drinks Ltd;

The pale straw colour and distinct peaty nose with floral notes compliment a full bodied palate with characteristic earthy peat and distinctive coastal notes. The long, powerful smoky finish is typical of single Islay malt whisky from this part of Islay.

On the nose not as peaty and smoky as it is on the palate, which makes it a true devil in disguise. Yet a very tasteful one.

The first impression, almost sweet and pleasant, but explodes with the first sips. Interesting vanilla sweetness and peaty smoky aromas comes to your brain. Strong but well drinkable without water. The strength of 57v% is not killing the tongue. For that price i give a buy recommendation.

    • Nose
Powerful peat, sea notes, roots, ashes, smoke and dryness.
    • Taste
It starts with powerful peat, a delicate sweetness, creamy notes, a little bit of sea notes and seaweeds. A lot of sweetness at all times. Also you can taste hints of smoked bacon in it.
    • Finish
Long, smoky and sweet. A lot of fireplace, alga and seaweed notes to it!

Very interesting version of the Port Askaig series.
    • Nose
Alcohol content, oily peat and sharp notes of peanuts. A little lemon too. A very pretty nose almost level of Laphroaig 15 years of 2000.
    • Taste
Discreet at the beginning then warms more and more, but the alcohol remains well integrated, no burning sensation. I found hints of honey, almonds, peat, smoke and spices. To make a comparison, I would say that it is more warm than that of Laphroaig 15 and I liked as much as that (see more) of Talisker 10 years.
    • Finish
      Good length.

  10. Roman scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

Very tasty whisky - damn it tastes good, nice power and peat, but balanced
    • Nose
strong, a bit sprightly, and a lot of peat - a little fruit comes through
    • Taste
less peat than expected, a little smoke and a little sweet and malty
    • Finish
      very beautiful long and peaty

Whisky that is cask strength should be extra full of flavors, but it doesn't reach all the way.
    • Nose
Powerful nose, full of peat, sweet peat.
    • Taste
Coal, tar and smoke, with a hint om citrus.
    • Finish
      Loooong finish, really nice.

    • Nose
      neat: nutty.
w/ water: more of the sooty and ashy character I often see in Coal Ila comes out
    • Taste
neat: peat, sweet vanilla in the background, with some spiciness and brine. w/ water: similar to neat
    • Finish
strange lingering astringency on top of a fruity, peaty finish
