‘The Char Monster’
N: Two Strathmill’s tonight, a 20yo WB and a 22yo WB both from Whisky Broker. Not sure what cask[s] we have here, but i detect some [sherried] sulphur, eggy-clay and heavily burned/charred onions. There’s not a lot else here but boy, it kind of works. There are peat monsters and sherry monsters, now bring forth the Char monster!
T: More sulphur but its ok, i’m going with it. Theres a deep-bitter, oak charring that starts us off but gradually the barley fights back.
F: With the barley almost level pegging, the bitter notes re-ignite as bitter-sour charred lemons roar! Sappy. vanilla custard creams at the death, but its the charcoal that reigns. A woody-grain oily/waxiness is maintained all the way through.
C: Messy and somewhat unorthodox, and yet kind of fabulous. Underneath all that charring could be a less than pretty malt. As it is it kind of works, so Im giving this the benefit of the doubt.
Scores a C
