The best of the private editions.
Well, at that time the bottle (0.7 l) cost around 79 EUR.
And today ! Sheep that many are probably buried somewhere in the basement instead of enjoying this great dram.
    • Nose
Immediately a sweet aroma rises to the nose.
Concentrated dried fruit compote, plum, cherry, red berries, sherry, sultanas
Tobacco notes, honey, mint, brown sugar
      Dark chocolate, coffee/cocoa
      This is definitely a snoop.
    • Taste
The entire range of smells and fruits is reflected in the taste. creamy/oily in the mouth,
Christmas spices (cinnamon, vanilla, marzipan) mingle with candied ginger
Distinct mocha and cocoa blended with leather and buttery scotch.
      Even a bit farmy.
    • Finish
      The finish is long.
Chocolate, coffee, spices, tobacco, sultanas and plums stay in the mouth.
Some wood is noticeable, but this goes beautifully with the other notes.

The aroma is intense, sweet. Concentrated dried fruit compote, tobacco, mint candies, potato peelings, honey comb, dusty burlap.
The taste is rich, sweet. Light perfumery, dried fruit concentrate, honey comb, milk chocolate, tobacco, a little pepper, barrel.
The finish is long. Strongly brewed tea, chocolate, spices, tobacco, phantom perfumery.

A worthy representative of the Private Collection line. The interaction of barrels and alcohols is at the level, here the work of barrels is at the level and the base is not clogged, everything is as we love. At first, the aroma seemed a bit biting, but a little more time for aeration and everything falls into place.

I would like to give 1 point for the `Price` part of the review but it would bring down my overall score of the whisky itself which I find a well 88 points.

A great example which shows that Price and Presentation have nothing in common with the rating of a whisky. I don´t rate the bottle nor the price tag, I rate the dram.

[August, 2012]  Together with friends I emptied a bottle that I bought for 63 Euro in April, 2012.

In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 92,5.  My notes state one of the best modern sherry profiles I had so far.  Absolutely clean, flawless and suberbly balanced.

[January, 2020] A long time ago I had this dram and scored it very high and I am curious if I still like it that much almost eight years (and thousands of drams) later...

...no, I do not. This is an easy quaffable but otherwise uninteresting modern sherried whisky with significant bourbon-alike impressions (so Jim scored it astonishing 96,5 points many years ago). A nice dram for Bourbon lovers but for traditional Scotch malt aficionados like me rather unimpressive.
    • Nose
      87 87
The colour is auburn and the nose offers exactly this modern sherry profile most sherry whiskies own. Back in 2012 this was new and interesting but now I find it rather boring. I had too much of such stuff over the last decade and despite it is flawless and balanced I am not excited anymore. This nose is average, at best...
    • Taste
      88 88
The taste is nicely layered on all three malt, sherry and bourbon flavours in fine balance. It turns dark chocolatey upon chewing with some spices and toffee. Not bad but again nothing special these days. Easy quaffable, no doubt. Water releases stronger bourbon aromas both in the nose and on the palate but it flattens the dram, too. I like the neat dram best.
    • Finish
      87 87
The dram arrives warming but almost not coating on the palate with a minor drying feeling (tannins). The finish is of medium length and turns more bourbon-ish (I guess that is why Jim rated this dram very high) so if you like Bourbon you will enjoy it very much, most probably - unfortunately I do not.

The balance of this whisky is perfect. However, if you see what the current (14.11.2016) purchase price of a Sonnalta PX Private Collection is, then you may wonder if so much money may be spent on a mi rather mediocre whisky ..... But perhaps he is so expensive because it has become a "collector's item".
    • Nose
Sherry and oak. Brown sugar and hints of dark fruit (cherries) and chocolate. A little bit of butter.
    • Taste
Sherry and the sweetness of chocolate. Also dark fruit like cherries. Hints of raspberry.
    • Finish
A medium finish with some salinity. Then sweet with cherries and raspberries. Sherry and in the end hints of sulfur.

  18. Hemdl scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

The Sonnalta is not without reason as one of the best bottlings of the "Private Collection". Nice malt, which definitely has something to offer for sherry lovers and sweet malt friends, and far better than the last bottlings that I did not like after Companta. Whether the current prices are justified? No, not in my eyes. Since the bottle should probably be more interesting for collectors, since the market holds for far (!) Less current prices for the Sonnalta wonderful bottlings, which must be hidden from this malt by far.
    • Nose
Dark gold, with a slightly reddish tinge, the malt shimmers in the glass.
After 15 minutes I have a wonderfully sweet malt in the glass. Caramel, a hint of milk chocolate, sweet sherry, light raisins, oranges. Green, sugar-coated grapes, noticeable oak in the background.
Great nose, no doubt. Not the typical "sherry bomb", but it is too subtle despite the many flavors and typical sweetness. Rather, the sherry nestles wonderfully in the already rather light and sweet character of Glenmorangie.
    • Taste
At first a bit shy, he developed after a very short time on the tongue a complete flavor. Light red fruits, sweet grapes, caramel. Beautiful, sweet Sherrynote. The 46.0% Vol. Need short to really get the malt on the tongue, but I'm also a big friend of cask strength. Afterwards, the Sonnalta shows full-bodied, with astonishingly beautiful oak in the background. Instinctively, I might have even allowed this bottling in a blind tasting at this point a few more years.
      Nice "after dinner malt".
    • Finish
Medium long, again first with sweet oak / sherry mixture, before the last takes over and the sherry, together with a hint of vanilla, fades.

    Color : Amber.
Smell : A sweet, rich, full, slightly sour and captivating whisky with notes of rum, barley, cereal, soft sherry, milk chocolate, honey, vanilla, lemon juice, kumquat, raisins, figs, sweet white wine, pear, apple, soft oak, earthy notes, macarons, apple syrup, hint to sulfur, cinnamon, ginger, orange and roasted nuts.
Taste : A subtle, soft, sweet and balanced whisky with notes of white pepper, maple syrup, honey, vanilla, Turkish fruit, orange, mandarin zest, tannin, oak, grapes, soft coffee, hint to tobacco, barley malt, berries, sherry and prunes.
Finish : Medium long and slightly drying aftertaste with notes of caster sugar, hint to leather, chocolate, raisins, hint to cherries and fresh fruit.
Conclusion : This is not at all what I expected. If there is PX on a bottle I expect a heavy whisky with a lot of complex sherry tones. However, this has been done very subtly. It is a light and fresh whisky that is more like a good rum barrel than a PX ripened whisky. With its 46% it is light and a touch of watery. I miss some power in this expression.

    • Nose
The aroma works mature, smooth, there is a nice mixture of wood, oranges and honey, all fine, nicely rounded, cultivated. Before PX, I would rather port in a blind test. (84 b)
    • Taste
Sherry's influence is very noticeable in taste. Sweet, with honey, chocolate. The flavor is markedly sour, warm, spicy. Ideal for peaceful relaxing sipping. (86 b)

    Tasting Notes and Comments by Glenmorangie;

Aroma: Chocolate-coated raisins, smothered in treacle with a sprinkling of demerara sugar. Further aromas emerge including ginger, toasted almonds and vanilla.

Taste: A sweet and fruity flavour progressing into a thick and syrupy pudding with a sprinkling of ginger and cinnamon.

Finish: Long and rich to the end with treacle toffee, sun-dried raisins and syrupy prunes.Having spent 10 long years maturing in American white oak casks this whisky is transferred into Spanish ex-Pedro Ximenez (PX) casks for its final two years of extra-maturation. Often described as the 'king of sherry casks' this rare wood was brought back from Jerez in Spain by our head of whisky creation Dr Bill Lumsden. Safely back in Tain it can then begin to weave its magic into Glenmorangie Sonnalta PX, adding the famous sweetness and intensity of the cask's previous resident. Glenmorangie Sonnalta PX is the first release in our prestigious Private Edition range: carefully selected, limited edition whiskies chosen from the 'cabinet of curiosities' of Dr Bill Lumsden, head of our Whisky Creation Team. Non chill-filtered.

This Glenmorangie Sonnalta PX is the second of the distillery`s Private

Collection bottlings after 2008`s release of Astar. Sonnalta PX has been

finished in casks formerly containing Pedro Ximenez, a deliciously

    rich, sweet sherry.

This is one of the higher drinking scotches at 92 proof, however very approachable and a nice suprise with every dram.
    • Nose
Sherry, some hints of spice. Some smoke and tobacco
    • Taste
Honeyed apricot, chocolate covered raisins, glazed citrus and cherry pits.
    • Finish
Leathery finish, subtle at first with a medium to ong finish at the end. Balanced sherry with vanilla and a nice bit of dried fruit. A nice after dinner scotch.

This is a great Glenmorangie. It has lots of sherry and a powerful finish. Huge flavor and a wonderful scotch.

  25. barto scored this whisky 88 points Member Junior

A really good sherry finish, a bit to expensive for such a young whisky.
    • Nose
Sweet, fruity(pears and grapes) blackcurrant winegums, vanilla pod, toffee, the sherry swirls in the backgroung and gives extra weight without taking over.
    • Taste
Medium sweetness, a bit winey, grapes, vanilla and toffee, sherry.
    • Finish
Short, sherry dominates with a little bit of citrus and vanilla.
