[March, 2018]  A bottling from the golden years of Caol Ila (1982-84) when they ran higher peat levels that result in very complex and delicate profiles now, after 30+ years of maturation.  I am sure no one back in the eighties thought about this long-term impact of the peat level decision - and that is why the greatest drams were produced rather by incident than on purpose...

The colour is pale gold and the texture shows small tears that consolidate to a sticky ring soon with later fat tears and very slow legs (what a great oiliness!).  The nose offers exactly this complex and delicate profile I hoped for.  Dozens of different peaty, fruity, malty and spicy aromas are intertwined to form a delicious nosing experience, especially after the dram breathed for some minutes.  The oiliness triggers a great mouthfeel that is instantly coating and nicely warming with no distracting moments at all.  I like it!  The taste itself is multi-layered (as usual with the drams from the golden years of Caol Ila) and at least as delicious as was the nose.  I leave the recital of all the different flavours to whoever likes to provide such a long list - to me this is simply an excellent taste.  The finish is long with a minor drying note (metallic) at the very end that is not distracting at all.  Some water releases more aromas in the nose and smoothes the taste, turning it even more quaffable.  Actually, I like it both neat and reduced to about 43% abv.

Yep, expectations met!  Another great dram from the best period of the modern Caol Ila distillery.  Just the price tag is a little too high...

http://kaypingers-whiskyblog.de/frontend/fullarticle.php?id=264 Color gold Nose: Very salty with peppery, fatty leathery notes. Fruity aromas of tropical fruits (lead lime), vanilla, honey and sweet caramel with smoky aromas of coal and ash. After prolonged breathing, green rhubarb and other fresh accents are added. Taste: First a little thinner body (not flavor), but with a lot of maritime flavor. Green, slightly dry and at the same time full of caramel sweetness. Soft, smoky peat soup combined with dried fruits and fresh accents of mint, chinas and champagne. The ubiquitous seasoning consists of nutmeg, salt and cayenne pepper. Finish: Long - slightly "gloomy" but still fresh. Wet ash, coal, peat, wood, nut flavors, softened mushrooms, garden herbs and a light woody-fresh finish. At no time dry. 92 points (nose: 91 / taste: 92 / finish: 92)

Complex masterpiece - a drop for the wing chair by the fireplace
    • Nose
Perfectly interwoven smoke, degraded over the long years in the barrel in salted fruits, cold ash with iodine, clear menthol, green melon, citrus notes, green apples, woodruff, geranium flowers, Zuchiniblüten, tree resin, honey
    • Taste
surprisingly sweet, fleshy smokiness, ham, green fruit, gooseberry, zucchini, avocado cream, again menthol, green tea - all components nicely enveloped by the harmonious smoke - great
    • Finish
sweet, comforting smokiness - very long

Try Jens at the Altstadtkneipe in Delitzsch.
A truly harmonious and complex Caol Ila that is characterized by its intense fruitiness. This CI has lost much of its smoke, but not of its power. The body is wide and stretches forever into a very long finish.

Fantastic old C.I. with all you can rightfully expect especially after giving it time to air, which jacks up the score by 2 points.

    • Nose
Beautifully assembled and mature. Subtle peat smoke, salt, slightly waxy, seaweed, beach pebbles and a hint of iodine, burnt nutshells, oily smoked fish and herbaceous accents. Maybe a trace of mustard? Top! Gets more and more exhausted with time. With water: Fragrant. Peaty, filigree, very salty, oily aromas, citrus zests and maritime accents of seaweed and seafood. Fantastic!
    • Taste
Excellent start with peat, salt, fragrant smoke, seaweed, earth, light fruit notes and extract rich oak. Top! With water: balanced peaty, salty, citrusy and maritime.
    • Finish
Very long, perfectly balanced. Peat, coffee, dark chocolate, tincture, fern and delicate smoke.

    • Nose

Very successful but somewhat optimistic priced.
    • Nose
In the nose after the obligatory warm-up and patient breathe leaves the Wiebers CI multi-layered, with age-related rather mild peat smoke on the one hand, and juicy fruits, mangoes and white grapes and fresh (heather) herbs on the other. In addition, hints of menthol and behavior - camphor are noticeable. Very interesting Malt, where there is a lot to discover.
    • Taste
Hello? Only for friends of really intense enjoyment! Truly powerful. The CI is so powerful that initially it is not easy to taste single flavors from the tightly woven carpet. It looks oily, no question, if not overly. Basically, the taste then follows the great nose. Significantly influenced by maritime impressions such as sea air and (peat) smoke and, so to speak, refined with the slightly sweet and flowery heather notes. Flavors, all of which form a unique combination that can hardly be found anywhere else in its powerful intensity. Very extraordinary. Some time ago I had a similar old Wemyss Caol Ila with the apt epithet "Harborside Brazier", which in my memory, purely from the basic profile, was not dissimilar.
    • Finish
Finally, when the smoke and spicy herbalism go, the oak remains. Not unpleasantly bitter but emphatic and unmistakable. More than 3 decades in the barrel leave indelible marks. That may be so. A successful as well as typical Caol Ila bottling, which is a lot of fun - if you like strong smoker and not necessarily the medical addiction.
