  1. ASWhisky scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

delicious to drink, for the age already very balanced
    • Nose
no movement after pouring: fresh fruity white wine, no alcoholic notes, then nutmeg and slightly sour, pleasant later with movement: malt, the white wine note recedes in the background, slightly sour bread dough, clove and nutmeg, candy note, water note
    • Taste
Smooth and then sparkling, tingling, pleasant, fruity with malt and sweetness, licorice, cereals, on the palate slightly bitter and wood / chocolate,
    • Finish
In short, the notes are weak, grain salt and some wood

  2. Rody024 scored this whisky 76 points Expert Senior

Promising dram considered the balance of flavours and the harmony of ABV. It is very young and new-makey though.
    • Nose
      78 78
      Intensity - 6
      Richness - 6,5
Peat smoke, malt, vanilla, smoked fish, banana and a whiff of walnuts.
    • Taste
      70 70
      Intensity - 6
      Richness - 6
      Watery, yet warming mouthfeel.
Black pepper, caramel, dried fruits and some vanilla.
    • Finish
      80 80
Surprisingly long with some complexity with tones of dried fruits and caramel.

  3. Shining_Bright scored this whisky 16 points Member Senior

Appalling - truly awful. Perhaps the worst 'whisky' I have ever tasted, yet priced at more than 10 y/o Springbank or Ardbeg 10!

And yet... if you can get beyond the horror of the arrival, there is some REALLY good spirit here just waiting to get older. But right now - its undrinkable, so how can others possibly give 80 points? are they awarding points for potential?
    • Nose
Raw new make spirit, rough grappa.
    • Taste
sharp spirit alcohol drowns out everything.
    • Finish
      Horrid.

This whisky certainly has potential. However, at the age of 3, he is clearly too young for me - so at best average!
    [Color] white wine;
    • Nose
      a lot of malt, cereals, lemon, lemone, floral, cold ashtray;
    • Taste
      fruity, sparkling, malty, grainy, cereals, sweetness, woody, smoky, distinct youth;
    • Finish
      short, sweet, fruity finish; peppery, smoky;

  5. Andytka3 scored this whisky 61 points Connoisseur

Light and disjointed, diluted new make with hints of canned fruits, some sweet malts, but irrelevant. You can nose it hard whole hour and still not getting much out from it. Probably from a batch with high proportion of refill casks. Tart and feather light.  Young, short and generic. Certainly needed more "cask time".

What strikes me in this dram is not it's level of maturity, but it's lack of immaturity! There are no distracting elements to be found. And that's for a 3yo! It's sweet and there is a soft sweet Lagavulinish peat coming trough, delightful! It's got aroma's you expect for a young Malt, not complex, but a whole lot of enjoyment factor. Really impressive with this 3yo first mass bottling! I'll be following them for the future for sure!

Still young, not mature and for the price .... well. There may be potential in the distillery, but there still seems to be a long way to go...

  9. herdertje scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
      85 85
apricots and a clear hint of smoke, nicely matched; in the background some sour apples and unripe pear, hint of banana and marshmallow
    • Taste
      85 85
      soft start, take a while
subtle presence of yellow and white fruit
    • Finish
      84 84
accent of nuts and a hint of smoke

  10. Kantenmechaniker scored this whisky 78 points Connoisseur

I find the nose quite pleasant, but in the mouth it is not mine. Rather unbalanced and too bitter/dry for me.
    • Nose
Honeyed sweet and grassy, some unripe banana, bread dough, slight freshness, pleasant, warmed some pepper, yellow ripe fruit in the background, spiced peach, vanilla and minimal glue associations
    • Taste
Rather dry onset, woody, grain, slightly tart, apple, honey only hinted at, salt, quite dry overall, almost bitter, watery, but still quite intense
    • Finish
slight freshness, woody, as if you had bitten through an apple shell, slightly malty

  11. Spiceweasel scored this whisky 81 points Expert Junior

    • Nose
      82 82
Light smoke, sweet vanilla, pear, spicy and yet complex for 3 years,
    • Taste
      82 82
Spicy, delicate herbal aromas, less sweet than the nose expected. The alcohol is there, but not quite harmonious.
    • Finish

Unfortunately much too short, light smoke aroma, subtle fruit, overall very light, sweet note

  16. Dre73 scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

Not bad, but it lacks a variety of tastes. Certainly not week, but just some sweetness and a hard to define spicy of far smoky edge on it.
    Far from mindblowing, but okay.
    • Nose
      81 81
Very light, grassy and some citrus, light some vanilla, and maybe a little burnt edge on it.
    • Taste
      80 80
Pretty strong, some peach, honey, pickering, Not very complex or varied. Again a kind of burnt edge far away.
    • Finish
      80 80
Less pepper now, honey-like sweetness, difficult to get specific tastes, sweet 'drop' perhaps?

Awful - yes I accept that they need an early financial return and it's barely 3 y/o. But for £45 I could buy a 10y/o Springbank - there is no comparison. Should never have been bottled.
    • Nose
Young raw spirit, un-tamed ex islay peated cask.
    • Taste
Grappa. Some sweetness from the cask.
    • Finish
Makes you shudder (Really!) this is nasty. And yet... somewhere in the background is a GREAT spirit that just needs 12 years aging to realise it's potential. I would truly be happy to invest in a barrel. But I would not buy another bottle.

A young but pleasant mole, there is a certain potential in the basis, the first pancake did not go far; it's very simple and simple, but some depth is visible, there is no sense of boredom and senselessness of the process when tasting, it will be interesting in the future to try the more seasoned spirits of this distillery. Rating: 8.30 reference
    • Nose
Open, a lot of grain, moonshine notes, very young, herbaceous tones, a few vegetables - turnips, zucchini; apples, a little lemon peel, very weak peat and smoky shades.
    • Taste
      Oily, sweet-grain with peppery wave.
    • Finish
Spicy, sweet-moonshine, orange peel, grapefruit crust, light notes of pickled cucumbers, a little oak.

  21. thijs100 scored this whisky 81 points Connoisseur

Young whisky, of course. But characterful nevertheless. And no fancy wood trickery either. Kudos.
    • Nose
Subtle orchard fruits, like apples, but also white grapes and banana. Somewhat grassy, with a hint of ash and smoke. It is plenty sweet, by the way. Think vanilla and marzipan.
    • Taste
I really enjoy the oily texture. The palate is a tad dry, and showcases some cracked black pepper. There's also room for a pinch of salt, as well as a light touch of smoke. Some sweetness remains, as do the green and yellow fruits, but certainly not as pronounced as on the nose.
    • Finish
      Spicy and nutty.

  22. larswehmeier scored this whisky 81 points Connoisseur

The very first whisky from Wolfburn shows for me already an amazingly high quality and makes it clear that much can be expected from the distillery.
    • Nose
First, fresh bright fruit-fruitiness. Over it a delicate plume of smoke that comes salty and reminds of the beach. With time in the glass, he becomes more and more grassy toward straw and
    • Taste
Light and mild on the tongue. The smoke is in the background. Fresh and fruity.
    • Finish
Quite short, but already slightly spicy. Already surprisingly round and hardly metallic.

The wolf shows his teeth. He has rough edges, the youngster. A few years longer in the barrel should take the sharpness on his tongue. If there are still a few corners left, so much the better. Potential is there.
    • Nose
Fresh, fruity first impression. Daisy flowers and freshly mown grass provide freshness, red apples and green grapes for the fruit, honey, biscuit and a light malt note.
    • Taste
After the promising nose, he is on the palate bite as expected. The 46% are heavy and a bit scratchy on the tongue, his youth you notice him. Lime blossom honey, vanilla, milk chocolate. Besides sawdust, that was it, too.
    • Finish
Medium to short, dry. Still fruity, but without that you could separate different flavors from each other in the finish.

For 3 years as I have said many times an absolutely promising treasure, all in all, of course, you have to see everything in context but I would drink it myself in between times and at the age!
    • Nose
Apricot incl. Bitter kernel, lots of malt and hops from the craft berry, vanilla, a little honey, oatmeal and of course a little alcohol at a young age
    • Taste
Surprisingly sweet at first, vanilla, cotton candy and sweets, then takes after 3-5 seconds the malt and hops in a pleasant way, light citrus notes, apricot with core still, honey, toffee, a little black pepper and a little Heiderauch as in Highland Park he always reminds me a lot
    • Finish
Dry, young, bitter and malty oak, honey, apricot, malt, short to medium

Certainly not bad for a new distillery. Looking forward for the older one and hope the oily taste doesn't increase.
    • Nose
Very fresh and citrus nose, sweet and fruity.
    • Taste
Sweetness with almonds, chewy and a thick layer of oil. Pepper and a very ligth peaty taste coming up. It's actually all there but in separate parts. It's not a complete drink yet.
    • Finish
Reasonable finish, sweet, nutty and a little salt.

  33. Thermidor scored this whisky 71 points Connoisseur

This could yet become an interesting whisky but let's try again after three to seven years. Thanks to WB member GIORGOS for the sample!

Tasted with Longmorn 12yo LMdW "number 4" 40,1% (81 pts.).
    • Nose
A bag of barley flour, maybe? A dusty, dry nose with a pinch of smoke, sand and a bag of sticks from an elementary school handcrafts class. Cheap chocolate. It doesn't change much with time.
    • Taste
On the border of being a whisky, body- and tastewise. New make and solventlike aromas dominate, followed by sweetness like Hermesetas or some other artificial sweetener. Faintly soapy as well. It's not bad at all but it does not feel mature enough by a mile.
    • Finish
A greasy tang, with a bit of copper and glue. Very short.

[January, 2017]  I had this dram during a FoSM club tasting.  I bought this bottle for 46 Euro in July, 2016.In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 82,5.  My notes state a typical immature and unbalanced "paedophilic" (meaning underaged) dram.  Nevertheless the profile is quite good so there is a chance that this spirit becomes a nice malt once it gets adult.

For a 3 year old this is an exceptional first effort from Wolfburn, the most Northernmost distillery on the Scottish mainland - having relieved Old Pulteney of that honour! It is an easy drinker but still manages a pleasing oily, costal mouthfeel and a hint of smoke without going over the top. This bodes well for Wolfburn Distillery stepping up to take its place at the top table in the future. I look forward to a 12yo and older! 84.
    • Nose
At first nose this is quite malty with hints of slightly sour white fruit, gooseberries and unripe green apples. I got a hint of white wine vinegar but then that faded away to leave just the malt & fruit. Underneath, very light oak and the faintest whiff of smoke. With water the malt intensified as did the alcohol.
    • Taste
Lovely, light fruity and malty taste. Wonderfully balanced and fresh for a whisky this young (3 years). I get fleshy white fruit (not quite ripe pears or nectarines?), white pepper with a little smoke coming though. The mouthfeel has an oily texture which gives a nice body to this malt. With water this got sweeter with the fruit more pronounced and somewhat riper!
    • Finish
The finish is quite short with lots of white pepper and a little smoke

my goodness, the palate and the finish are really good. the nose can improve, but man, this is their first stuff!

have to say, I´m a fan of this style of very young malts

expecting a lot of these stills!
    • Nose
very young of course, very much on barley, mash. but there´s also a fruitiness which I cannot really pin down. cooked bananas?, sour dough. some unpleasant notes vanish with time. minerals, dust.
    • Taste
I expect it rather sweet, let´s see: yeah it is sweet but very pleasant. huge arrival , very loaded. a wonderful fruitiness with red apples in the foreground, marzipan and a faint peatiness. wow!
    • Finish
      long, dense and ultraclean.

    • Nose
Fresh cereal notes, malt, vanilla, pleasantly sweet with light fruits. Add lemons, apples, mint and a good portion of walnuts. In the background a delicate smoky note lingers. Spicy oak woody notes are being sought in vain because of their young age of just three years.
    • Taste
Strong onset with a noticeable Pfeffrigkeit or (rather) alcoholic sharpness. Surprisingly oily texture with a pleasant sweetness in the front of the mouth. Now slightly stronger smoke with subtle maritime notes. Salt, vanilla, sweet bright fruits and a dominant Nussigkeit follow. Again, I find no spicy notes.
    • Finish
Rather short to medium long. Again cereals, sweet bright fruits, nuts and almonds with a subtle smoky note. Towards the end a bit drier, without bitterness or noticeable spicy notes.

Straw. It stings on the nose. Yeasts Do we have a little queen-claude? In the mouth, immature, aggressive. Final stiff with a little aftertaste of burning. A few drops of water bring a little freshness, but that's all. Well then. Like what, it's not because we make whisky in Scotland that it's good right away. French distilleries are already doing better in just a little more time. When you have no experience, you have no experience, point. (But I will wait)

Nose: Rather hefty bourbon-cask. Lots of vanilla, honey and toffee. I think it's a rather good nose for a 3yo. There is not much of a depth, but it is very promising. There is also a flowery side to it.

Taste: Sweet and sour arrival. Some vanilla and toffee again. The sour candy keeps above all of it.

Body: This is very promising, thick and oily!

Finish: short-medium: again a lot of bourbon influences. copy/paste nose.

Price: A bit high for a 3yo, but they must make some money back not?

    To be followed closely.
    • Nose
Fresh, lively and without aggressiveness. White fruits (pears), pretty fragrant and spicy spices (vanilla, salt), a hint of waxy glue, vegetable and malty scents (cereals), finally peaty licorice riff.
    • Taste
A tone above the nose thanks to a nice body (especially for a real youngster) fluid texture, almost suave. So a nice amplitude of the nose with notes of white fruits (pears), strong spices (ginger, salt), almond cake and citrus (fresh lemon and candied). In the background, some plant notes (eucalyptus) emerge from which an ashen liquorice emerges. A good start for this young distillery.
    • Finish
Medium, fresh and quite round, on spicy fruits and ashes.

So yes, the potential is undeniable. In 10 or 15 years, it will certainly be a very good whisky. But for the moment, it's way too young for my taste. And I also hope that Wolfburn can distinguish itself more frankly from the point of view profile that will be clean, less "clynelishien" than in this Hand Crafted.
    • Nose
Quite nice indeed, nothing disgusting; I was expecting worse (like what, I have a priori). Pear liquor (here I feel the sensations close to the new make), plum, a slight iodine breeze, and even a hint of wax. I almost think I'm in the presence of a young Clynelish (the two distilleries are not far from each other, so that may explain that). Soon the malted and sweet cereal cropped up, betraying even more the youth of this whisky.
    • Taste
Here on the other hand, I have a lot more trouble, it collapses. Sweet malt, pear "new make", invasive coarse salt, young lemon astringent. It's very young and not attractive, I think.
    • Finish
Short. The perry salted remains a moment in the mouth, then an astringent drought settles briefly.

Hmmm. that's nothing for me. The nose reminds me very much of the Abhainn Dearg so I would say he is too young. I look forward to the following bottlings
    • Nose
something sour, vanilla, slightly smoke, nuts, spicy from alcohol, bannans come through
    • Taste
very light on the tongue, smoke and banana
    • Finish
      Nut, smoke, overall short

It's not the worst, but I'm not going to go into this one again
    • Nose
Distinct and full of smell - flowers, malt, tropical wood and somewhere in the background slightly peat and spice - it's not a bad guy
    • Taste
The taste is rather dry - woody and spicy, combined with coffee flavor, nut tastes and hidden peat - it's not the worst, but it feels that this whisky is very young.
    • Finish
Dozvuk is short, dominated by woodiness, spiciness and is the weakest feature of this drink

  65. Implar scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

It's obviously a very young whisky, but it shows promise. I'm looking forward to taste more of their stuff.
    • Nose
Smoked malt, accompanied by barley and cereal notes. It's youth is showing itself, as the smell jumps out at you. However, there are little to no off putting notes to be found.
    • Taste
The arrival is a bit shy, some peat and limoncello. A musky note as well. Also strong notes of white pepper and some cereal.
    • Finish
A bit of oak and earthiness. Quite short.

Well, we can't expect too much given the age, but I still find it quite disappointing. In this price range there are many way better daily drams to be found.
    • Nose
A rather shy dram with vanilla, coconut, green apples and some oak shavings. Slightly sweet, very mild intensity.
    • Taste
Quite thin and flat, white sugar, some apple, banana and wood spices - pepper and ginger.
    • Finish
Medium long, delicate sweetness turning into harsh bitterness with burning chilli.

I was really skeptical after the malt was highly praised and better informed. The nose is really very Rhön and makes you want more. Unfortunately, taste and finish do not quite keep up (but what do you want for "only" 3 years ?!). In any case, I'm very curious about what will be served in the coming years by Wolfburn.
    • Nose
very sweet with vanilla; Sugar and bananas; but also malt with fresh grain; only slightly metallic and sharp; a little toffee and caramel; over time, citrus aromas and light grapes mix; Overall, the sweet, cereal-like aromas dominate, but there is not much left in the oak. towards the end, the youthful character becomes clearer
    • Taste
slightly creamy; again straw and grain; Vanilla and hints of caramel and apples; neatly peppery towards the end; metallic and slightly sharp
    • Finish
short to medium length; First, sharpness, followed by a little vanilla and then dominate again grain, straw and malt flavors; the youthful metallic impact is most noticeable in the finish

  68. St. Pauli scored this whisky 82 points Connoisseur

A decent start by Wolfburn, with a fruity whisky. Not the most complex, but that couldn't be expected after 3 years of maturation.
    • Nose
Pear, lemon zest, garden herbs, a little peat, salt, mineral (lime stone), vanilla, some almond in the background.
    • Taste
This one is sweeter than the nose suggests, but stays within the same profile.
    • Finish
Getting a little bitter on pepper, otherwise it's the spirit that speaks, with a little peat from the maturation on quarter casks.

For a three-year whisky a real hit. Wonderfully oily texture, surprising finish and only a little youthful. I'm looking forward to more bottlings from Wolfburn.
    • Nose
The nose starts fruity with apple and pear. Afterwards, the smoke of the Islay QC becomes noticeable. After a while I smell nuts, cloves and mint.
    • Taste
Surprisingly, you can taste the smoke first. The texture is pleasantly oily. Now come notes of cereals and biscuits. The whisky is just a little bit youthful.
    • Finish
The finish is not too long, but longer than expected. There remains the smoke and a hint of almonds.

    • Nose
Light smoke, fresh lemon, fruits. We feel that the product is young. A little ashes, earth. Makes me think of a young Ledaig.
    • Taste
Rather dry, not very sweet, rather austere. Always earth and ash, lemon. Mineral set. Some touches of acidulous candy.
    • Finish
Morello cherry, lemon, a little earth. Good length.

A brilliant premiere malt from Wolfburn. Of course it's young and you can feel that in the flattish development, but the distillate is immaculate and the idea to use quarter casks from Islay was a moment of genius. Add to that a perfect craft presentation and you have a distillery playing all its cards right and aspiring to be the second great 21st century distillery (after Glengyle).
    • Nose
Fascinating nose with nashi pear, apples, sea grass, maritime breeze, marzipan, grass and asparagus. A touch of vanilla is interwoven with the fresh and maritime profile. Definitely quite peaty. What a successful start!
    • Taste
Very decent attack, with smoke, liquorice, sea salt and almonds. Then the sweetness is back on top, with marzipan, lemon drops and apples. All that is very nice, and the flavors do not feel "young" at all. The youth is reflected less in the aromatic profile than in the form: The malt develops a bit flattish on the palate and you can feel a lack of substance contributed by the length of maturation. Still: very delicious and a great performance for a 3-year-old.
    • Finish
Sweet, fresh, clean, and not too long - of course. But imagine, 5, 7 or 10 years from now...

A young whisky announcing pretty things for the future of the distillery. It's simple, effective and already an impressive aromatic maturity. I am surprised at the consistency of the whole. A beautiful achievement that will make you have a good time. Some may think that 50 € for a whisky barely 3 years is not cheap, I will tell them that sometimes for much more expensive, it's much worse;)
    • Nose
we inevitably feel the markers of youth with notes of vegetables, cereals, hay, green wood, vegetables, but, at the same time, there are sweet fruity fragrances, especially with ripe pear, apple and vanilla. In the background, there is a slight note of smoke and somewhat austere notes of pencil chips, freshly printed newspaper. With the opening, appear some spices: cumin, paprika.
    • Taste
a pretty power, a pretty sweet texture for a whisky of this age. It's consistent with the nose: notes of cereal with apple and pear, all sprinkled with vanilla. There are a few almonds too. It's pleasant. The light smoke gives body to the whole and the austere notes of paper and chalk bring relief. The second part of the mouth reveals fresh notes of eucalyptus. It's well done!
    • Finish
it has a good length, with dry notes of cereals, some fruits, spices and above all, a nice freshness that persists a little while.

"Hand Crafted"> how does the production diverge here with those of other distilleries? And a wild beast on the cover, was not that too? But there I find the question more interesting, how this new brand with the further production years will develop: Less and less smoke and a conversion more to the typical Highlander?
    • Nose
And now I can describe my subjective impressions a little more precise: First, citrus fruits and malt, but then appear the first smoke, which cover the previously recognizable vanilla as with a curtain.
    • Taste
Then stronger smoke, which now seems to come from the glow of a pile of straw, enriched with salty elements. The initial subtleties are lost or obscured, whereas the alcohol slightly tickles the throat
    • Finish
and then the whole thing becomes the sticky tar of a smoker's lung, softened by some liquorice, something coughing up

Sweet with a big bourbon influence with a lot of pear. Vanilla, caramel, sweet lime and white grape.
    • Taste
Sweet lime, caramel, pear, peat and vanilla. All a bit artificial, the casks have a good influence but can't mask the youth of the spirit.

On the nose: light and fruity with apple and citrus covered delicate peat smoke. After a few minutes the smoke is more prominent, but in a 5 ppm-sense.

There I can be a bit spiteful for once - and hope that the producers really mixed the many barrels that are already on the market and that we are all talking about the same drink ... - And a little to a modification of the fairy tale "The Emperor's new clothes" reminds: Again, a naked heir to the throne with a little Rauchgeschwabber umwedelt and (almost) all find him sooo cute ... - There are many forums on the precise barrels used, although after studying the homepage of the producers I'm not at all clear, which portion of this first in the much-tasted Islay Quarter Casks has matured for how long (of course, I do not share deny ...) - When I first tasted this drop without reading it, and I was touted by the seller in Austria as a 'Speyside' made by a lady ... - in surprise, I have something more than 'just a note' or 'one' Touch to discover smoke ... On the other hand, I do not find the much-prized asparagus anywhere, but rather mossy wolf hair ... - in a nutshell, a very, very young drop with a bit of smoke is now made enjoyable with a brilliant marketing performance and (almost) everyone but me is thrilled ... - but I will follow the further development of the Wolfburn of course curious (if he gains a point every year, he will be terrific) and in the meantime, possibly another outsider feel a quantum better than other connoisseurs like to do it ...

Three years in refill quarter casks, which previously contained peaty whisky, have taken the edge off the (very well-made) new-make but have still left quite a bit of spirit character intact, intermingling with light sweet influences from the cask and a hint of peat from the previous cask contents. Nicely quaffable and a good start!

I had a sample imported from the Whisky Festival 2016. The whisky is very young, but as we know, the three-year-old can be done very well when it is done, and it is strange that these Skots have played as playfully both the Teutons and the Ami , and you still he is proud to report a low age. So for me Wolfburn was a total disappointment. Both by the quality of the whisky itself and by this approach.
    • Nose
Citrus freshness, fruit sweetness, grassiness, vanilla, wood in a lighter style. With longer leavening, green apples, malt, some metallic hue, unripe kiwi. All this is up to a rounded cream. (83 b)

Young, wild and stormy. Salt and smoke dominate, again and again fruit and cereals.
Not bad for his age, which I lack the depth and the wood (but can not be due to the age or not at all).
    • Nose
Metallic and sprittig, that's the first impression. Then a pleasant smoke is noticeable, sweetness and a hint of vanilla are added. A fruity note, it could be apples, arises.
    • Taste
Shortly I discover cereal notes, then short fruit and then the smoke hits. Now slightly sharp and bitter smoky notes dominate. The smoke is getting more intense. Salt settles over the tongue. Bitter and spicy, the Wolfburn exudes a chubby mouthfeel.
    • Finish
Again, this salty feeling. The smoke also dominates the finish. Grain notes and light sweetness complete the now sharp, salty and bitter finish. At the very end, a bitter walnut aroma is created.

Exciting: Exciting about the "young age". Acts, as written in some comments, older than he is. Certainly thanks to the Quarter Cask maturation. I discover something more than just a hint of, smoke? Unobtrusive, but always present.
Exciting also in terms of the potential already in this young Wolfburn.
Exciting to see how the bottlings develop over the next few years.

It's good, it's clean, well cut. It only requires a few years of cask more. To follow, and with great pleasure!

A lot of smoke, ashes and phenols (gouache, tar, medicinal notes). I found a lot of nuts. With a little aeration all these aromas intertwine and balance with wonder. This is an amazing complexity for a 3 year old whisky. Behind this screen of smoke and phenols hides the fruity esters and particularly pear and apple.
    • Taste
we find the elements present on the nose. Again this nutty? Peat, smoke plays with fruits and cereals. Alcohol is well integrated. Good balance. Promising!

    ‘All eyes on Wolfburn’

N: Clear, fresh and gentile spirit with some light summer fruits and muesli mash. Malty also with chocolate - all blanketed in positive casks that aren’t too zingy. There's skilful cask management going on.

T: Raisins are go! Arrives and delivers very well and is neatly balanced. Rather sweet but not saccharin by any means, more pectin sweet. Otherwise it’s hints of this 'n' that with no nip. Is there a sherry influence here, 70/30 bourbon/sherry perhaps?

    F: Short yet tidy conclusion.

C: All present and correct, very, very good. One of the best [Scottish] 3yo’s around and this is it’s ‘official’ debut - all eyes on Wolfburn certainly.

    Scores a C+ [84]

    Further reading: WF85

N: I was impressed by this [Wolfburn's first release], the first time i tried it and recently the Aurora too WB. It appears today [in context of a few weeks worth of whisky gems], to be a modern 'flavour driven', [good] dirty-ish malt yet one with no roughness.

T: Appears as young as its three years would suggest.

    F: Not much

C: Humble beginnings but good spirit.

Straw color, expressive nose, malty, vanilla, still marked by the green fruit side of his youth. More interesting on the palate, with a nice thick and oily texture, a little vanilla, malt attack and finally a smoky side, pepper, spices, tobacco and a touch of iodine. Final medium length, but as the end of the mouth we find a certain austerity spicy / smoke / iodine very promising for the next traffic jams of this distillery.

What a horny whisky for his age. Beautiful malty sweet with citrus and grapefruit. A little spiciness and sharpness along with the aromatic smoke make the drip look older than it really is. Very mature (for his age) and interesting. This impression remains in the taste - it adds a wonderful vanilla note. He is very sweet and oily in the mouth. The smoke is very well integrated and gives the malt a special kick.
Very good first malt from Wolfburn. I wonder what the next years will come.

    Chalk

The panic around the pricing of the first single malt from Wolfburn – I was told 220 EUR – was much ado about nothing. Apparently that was only for a special distillery only bottle. Mortals like you and me can get this regular release of the 3 years old single malt for just under 50 EUR. What a relief!

Just like the 2013 spirit sample that I tried, the nose is sweet, full and round. Loads of vanilla, white fruit (pears, but mostly apples), followed by a lovely green note. Think asparagus and a leaf of mint, but also some chalk. Softly spiced on ginger and a bit of woodsmoke. Very pleasant.

The first sip offers loads of pepper and a big smokiness. It is quite oily, by the way. Could this be the peaty version? Must be. Lovely pepper and some soot. Then the fruit returns (it is all apples now). The vanilla and ginger are present on the palate as well. The second sip gives some grasses and a slice of lime. Or is it pink grapefruit? Anyway: agrums. Quite nice indeed.

The finish is medium long and brings back the sweetness. But it remains a maritime malt. That is the same conclusion as I came to after the 28 month old sample.

For 50 EUR a bottle, this warrants a place in the cabinet. This is – keeping the age in mind – a nice introduction. What an entrance, Wolfburn!

A young Highlander who deserves my respect. They did the right thing in Thurso. The youth defused with a Quatercaskausbau. He looks much older. Nose, taste and finish are something new, which I have not experienced so in a Scotsman Price absolutely in Odnung, a great packaging with a lot of information and they make no secret that this Malt has only 3 years on the hump. This distillery is on my radar

Sure, he is young, but he feels less young than he actually is. There is already huge potential. I liked this guessing game, smoke or not smoke, I'm sure I'm still not there, and the balance is pretty good for such a youngster. What I did not like was the very watery mouthfeel. I'm curious what's to come ...
    • Nose
Lemons, grapes and yeast right at the beginning. Some durability ensures an astonishingly balanced and harmonious nose. The fruit basket appears to be filled better, pineapple is to be found, now also some malt and vanilla. The yeast is no longer available in the meantime, it should not be left too long, otherwise the yeast note becomes extremely dominant. Heated, the yeast goes back, the alcohol is now tingling something and I'm pretty sure I'm dealing with slightly distilled distillate. A fresh cereal note is also added.
    • Taste
Very fluid, slightly peppery in the onset, the smoke seems to be confirmed, no excessive sweetness, but clearly acid notes that really really fruity look, in addition to bready hints. A clear metallic crackling bitterness is expected to exist, but hardly bothers, but instead fits in quite harmoniously.
    • Finish
The finish is not particularly long and questions the smoking thesis again. At best, a slight Nussigkeit remains after the flavors have disappeared evenly quickly.

He is so young, as the cork pops open like a sparkling wine. The color is still quite bright with a slight tendency.

First glue notes, then the pineapple and quince comes in a birch forest. Very delicate nose, caressed by a hint of vanilla. If he breathes for a while, even more fruits come, green apple, kiwi and the glue note disappears. The first sip, yes, there is a little peat, then sharpness, a little bit of lemon, caramel, cereal note. Departure is still short, but mild with slightly oily acidity.

Still far from being complex, but overall very harmonious. The flavors match and complement each other to a neat young savage. The nose is much better than in the mouth, but this may be up to me. All in all, I am looking forward to the further development

Nose: Very young and Fresh. Green fresh cut fruit. Fresh hay and a bit of acid. Much like Cail Ila Moch in my memory, but without the peat. Some ink (fresh "drukwerk"). Very nice and did I mention fresh?

Taste: Quite oily and not as alcoholic as I expected. Some peat smoke. Fresh fruit, pepers and sourness. Gets even oilier with water.

Not as good as the nose however.

Finish: Peper and smoke. Alcohol, some bitterness and nuts. Fades rather quickly.

Improved a lot within a few days. Very promissing

Nose: fruity, a yeasty note, some apple, fresh, a hint of vanilla I have too

Taste: smoky, I had not in the nose, peppery, some chili, bright fruit, not particularly complex, you can feel the youth

Finish: surprisingly long, I would classify as "medium"; warming, smoky, black pepper, some residual fruit

For his 3 years really good, I'm curious what's left of Wolfburn in a few years. I've tried a sample, and ordered me right after a big bottle :-)

Quite nice and interesting for 3years. But as expected not much complexity and the finish could have been better.

Let's wait another 9years and this dram will blast our minds :-)

Nose is very fresh and light with sweet apples, green apples, honey, plums and grassy. Some glue shines through and also a 'book smell'... don't know how else to describe it.

Smoke on the palate! Oh wow, didn't expect this after nosing it. Ashy, sooty smoke. Not in the foreground, just lingering on the background. Lots of yellow fruits, plum, honey, dried grass or tobacco. White pepper and the heat of jalapenos accompanies all of this.

Finish is medium, warm with hints of papaya, plums and citrus. I quite like this.

With water the green apples become more dominant on the nose, the palate almost doesn't change, loses a bit of 'edge' (for the lack of a better word). Also, chalk enters the palate. Finish has more heat to it with water.

Already a lot of fruit and power in the start. Pleasantly a lot of smoke. The Nosing is clearly ahead, the youth is still on the palate, but he makes a lot already.

Very fruity and fresh nose, with pear drops, creamy honey, cereal, salty sea air, and a hint of Cadbury's Fruit & Nut chocolate. A hint of soft peat comes through after a while (more Highland Park peat than Islay peat), alongside a woody note from the cask. Fruity and salty on the palate, with a full mouth feel I associate with older drams. Only a slight alcoholic 'edge' reminds you of its youth. Again, a faint waft of peat smoke creeps up on you and leads into a soft, smoky, lingering finish. Clearly still fairly young, with the occasional rough edge showing, but this is remarkably complex for its age, and dangerously drinkable. Great credit to the distillers for releasing this at 46% and ncf. And for a reasonable price too! This shows some serious promise for the future. Wolfburn is now truly, and rightfully, back on the whisky 'map'.
