  1. Kantenmechaniker scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

In the end, a bit too much lemon for me, even if it just got the curve in the finish, I had better ex-Bourbon Kilchoman
    • Nose
slightly floral, a little vanilla, honey, a lot of smoke, pepper, pear, over time it becomes fruity, sour, the smoke becomes spicier, there is a pinch of cinnamon, malt, still looks a bit young
    • Taste
Oily, creamy, vanilla, sweet, also here directly grassy notes, cinnamon, smoke, ash, therefore rather dry, vanilla is present, some oak, chalky, lemon, ripe floury pear, it appears a bit more mature in the mouth than in the nose
    • Finish
fresher, more lemon, tart, malt, cinnamon, now the smoke comes again stronger, dirty, ashy, a little gunpowder, dry, astringent, the lemon is getting more and more penetrative and almost goes towards Klostein, long-lasting, the lemon then also swings up again a more pleasant measure, light sweetness comes back, then finishes nicely, in addition, the grass comes back, slightly soapy

The whisky shows very nicely what an "old" Kilchoman is capable of. My personal taste profile he hits it not so accurate, too clear to me the sour notes. Nevertheless, everything is well integrated, the quality is high and the balance is exemplary. The rating is therefore independent of my personal taste.
    • Nose
First strong mineral notes with some sweat and cowshed. Longevity binds in the notes and ensures harmony. Coal dust and lemon juice, a clay chute in the rain, juicy sour cherries, disinfectants, floor wax, camphor and dried bananas, all that can be found, and the party still takes place in sweaty clothes in the cowshed. Heat pushes the whole thing again on the mineral side, sweeter he is also at the same time. The cowshed goes back and instead there is a dark, malty caramel smoke profile, as one is used to from Laphroaig now and then.
    • Taste
This impression also continues in the mouth, dark, liquid block malt with an oily consistency and again mineral and sour notes. The alcohol pushes strong, but remains easy to control, has more of a chili-catch. At the back, it dries significantly, becomes sour at first, and then goes over with a soft sweetness in the finish.
    • Finish
When the dark malt syrup has slowly dried up, a very tender salty, nutty smoke remains on the tongue for a long time, smoldering logs hit it. In addition, a pleasant, tart oak bitterness is added at the end.

Brillliant whisky. Wonderful, outstanding nose. Could nose this for hours. No need for Scotty to beam me up, just nosing this one does the trick.
Fragile character, superb complexity - on the nose.

Now that I know HOW GOOD a nearly ten year old Kilchoman can be, I'm looking forward to the first 12 year old !

The guys that are telling us that Kilchoman is best when young are f-ü-*-*-*-*-* liars. When matured in premier caks, this spirit will not deteriorate with more maturation, it still will be getting better and better. There are very good young Kilchomans, but age matters nevertheless.Besides, a lot of things matter. Unfortunately, the taste cannot keep up with that wonderful nose, although it's still really good.

The body is rich in a quite oldschool way. I'd think that this is the way, whisky probably was made before the atomic age.

Price is high, as it is with most Kilchomans beyond the Machir bay range, but it is still somewhat reasonable compared to quality.

The presentation is as good as with nearly all other Kilchomans.

And last but not least, I like the distillery a lot. Greetings to Peter and James. Just go on !
