I'm a big fan of sulfur, so of course that's just my thing. If you do not like sulfur, keep your fingers away!
    • Nose
After pouring matches pure and massive. Another barrel from hell? No, after some life, the really beautiful light-fruity, next to the sulfur. Mirabelles, quinces and red apples, with some light caramel. Do not misunderstand, the sulfur is already dominant, but behind it is much more! An idea leather in the damp cellar, a bit of nutmeg, more caramel, which is getting darker and old oak. It warms up very earthy and a lot of barrel acid rises, whereby the sulfur is now strongly pushed back, more apples for it, core casing and furniture polish now too. Heat really changes him enormously.
    • Taste
Occurs very mild and almost viscous, first very sweet and caramel with a few candied apples, next come the tannins and the sulfur announces that it still exists. Light acid on the palate, the alcohol is really exemplary included.
    • Finish
The finish is long, the tannins go quite fast, he is again increasingly sweeter with slightly sulfuric impact. But also a slight eucalyptus note develops. He just warms up shortly after. Much later, there is some sulfur on the tongue.

This is a well-pronounced dirty, damp, dark sherried whisky which is worth exploring if you like that style. I find it quite attractive, although a little too hot, dry and tannic on especially the palate and a bit in the finish too. Hadn't this been the case, it would have scored at least 3 points more.
    • Nose
      88 88
Quite sulphuric after pouring: struck match and dense oxtail soup. It settles down quickly enough to leave a more balanced nose in which other things can be detected. Those are bold cereal, oranges (regular and blood orange), raisin, prune, leather, balsamic vinegar, cola cubes, tobacco, leaf, nutmeg and ginger. It's still rather damp and dark.
    • Taste
      83 83
Full-bodied, rather hot and certainly not "sweet". The oak had its grip on this whisky and delivered quite some tannins and bitter spices. Further, it still has that dirty, earthy profile with old leather, oxtail soup, bitter chocolate, coffee, tobacco, balsamic acid and dried fruits.
Overall I like the profile and level of acidity very much, but the tannins and bitter spice are over the limit for me.
    • Finish
      85 85
Rather long, staying quite tannic and dry, with a nice acidity. There is still fresh fruit (orange) alongside the dried fruits that come from the cask. Rancio, chocolate, tobacco and wood complement this finish.

A beautiful old style fat dirty ben Nevis with a grain of sulfur and thick drops of sherry. In this case, a top combination. Something on the firm side but certainly good what sherry buffies want. The price is actually just a bit too strong. Anyway, you have forgotten the purchase costs in the 2nd dram. So great.

  4. Tauti did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

Tried it at Whiskyschiff Zürich 2016. Was my frist dram that night and I was stunned. Gummy, sulphury and earthy Sherry. What a dirty one! Unfortunatly with 199 CHF way to expensive. Nevertheless great dram for dirty Sherry lovers! For the rest: Keep your hands off it. You won't understand ;)

Now this is more like it! This whisky is more challenging and has nice layering of rich darn and fruity flavours. Quiet characterful as one might expect from an independent bottling. Its a playful dram that does not play well with water. With H2O it becomes very woody, bitter and almost too stringent for my taste. But with water it can keep me occupied for quite some time and over this time the aromas are ever changing.

All in all a nice sherry cask matured Ben Nevis with a challenging price tag.
    • Nose
A full, rich, powerful and layered whisky with aromas of sweet sulfur, coffee, sweet Pedro Ximénez sherry, toffee, butterscotch, dark caramel, dried fruits, (dates, plums and sultanas), backed banana, old books, hint of leather, beeswax, tobacco, chocolate, mocha, berries (Bramble), grapefruit zest, cinnamon, nutmeg, sweet cloves, red apple, pears, kiwi, apricot, muesli, malt, pepper and spicy oak.
    • Taste
A powerful, warm and rich whisky with aromas of slightly sour fino sherry, lush Oloroso sherry, cherries, apple, dates, figs, plums, apricots, lemon zest, cinnamon, grapes, tobacco, black tea, subtle leather, cherry bonbons, sulphur, mocha, green apples, tannins, hint of molasses, burned caramel, cocoa powder, grass, hint of butter, earthy tones and rich oak.
    • Finish
A long and slightly drying finish with aromas of pepper, cinnamon, cocoa powder, dried fruits, tannins, sulfur, dark honey and old oak.

Rusting iron and sweat, Copper, ageing meat. The promise of beer ( not the beer itself)
    • Taste
      88 88
      A full mouth of bacon
    • Finish
      90 90
The finish is like a printout from a dot matrix printer smells. Ozone and pollen

    really tiring whisky
    • Nose
      modern sherry cask
    • Taste
      glue, wood, warm milk
    • Finish
      awful

The water accentuates even more the wooded, bitters me and the astringence and lets perceive more citrus (lemon) and vanilla
    • Nose
the nose is immediately taking. Very marked by sulfur and fleshy notes a little unpleasant in my case. Also on the menu: leather, dark chocolate, tea, baked caramel (bitterness?) Raisins, dried fruits, speculoos, stewed apricots, plum, nutmeg. In short, a good big sherry what.
    • Taste
the attack is frank but shows some flexibility because the fruits are still present. The development slips to a bitterness too pronounced for me. The wood is here very present. A little mint back in the middle of the mouth
    • Finish
      bitterness. drought. Wood. Nutmeg

  10. Bishlouk scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Typical flavors of a sherry cask, but "neat" is far too nagging! A drop of water is needed.
82/100 without water, 85/100 with water
    • Nose
Typically influenced by the Sherry. Raisin, dried red apple, apricot. A few drops of tangy grapefruit. Caramel spices grow quickly. Swirls of tobacco in the background. With water : woody and spicy tobacco is growing.
    • Taste
At the first sip, alcohol tears everything in its path. It is necessary to wait for the second so that the mouth becomes accustomed and that this burning sensation is calmed (and yet I am accustomed to the high rates of alcohol). Caramelized grapes, dried fruit, exotic spices, black plum, tobacco and black tea. With water : Haa yes, it's better! The flavors are rounder, it's less nagging.
    • Finish
Long. The heat of the alcohol continues. The flavors fade however fast enough. Only the spicy raisin persists. With water : dry wood dominates.
