Rich, heavy, fruity and meaty sherry dominates the nose. Plenty of earthy notes, damp dunnage warehouses and cigar smoke also contribute to a complex and engaging profile. Not as sweet or clean as many other recent sherry 'bombs' I've tried, but very rich and rewarding. Lovely! The Speyside spirit comes through more on the palate, providing a nice balance to the heavy sherry. Again, a dark, slightly 'dirty' (but in a good way!) and meaty profile dominates, with smoked ham, roasted coffee beans, and herbal notes all coming through beautifully, retained right through to the long, lingering finish (a hint of dry bitterness here is the only slight let down for me). Fantastic cask selection by Whiskybroker and sold for a very fair price. Speyside wasn't previously a distillery I had had much time for, but this dram suggests that they can turn out some excellent whisky.
