A strange whisky, has flavors that I have never had. Unfortunately, some of them are not nice flavors, especially this spritzy schnapps note is very annoying, and the poorly integrated alcohol stands out. The whisky looks very immature in places. An unusual maturation that is certainly not for everyone. It wants to be worked out, but then shows me great bitter notes that I like. Oxidation helps here, the whisky wins significantly. Fortunately, the muff note disappears. I'm not sure, but it could have come from the sample lid.
    • Nose
Immediately alcohol, solvent, then sweet and sour, slightly metallic, a sprightly schnapps-like aroma, green, very unripe apple, freshly cut branches, subliminally a malt note and with everything a strange muff note, which luckily recedes after a while
    • Taste
Alcohol, very spicy, then immediately a strong bitter note, very concentrated, very metallic, acidic, here too, unripe apples, the sprightly schnapps note here, too, an indefinable herbal note and also the omnipresent muff note, which, however, wears off after a while
    • Finish
at some point the herbs slowly give way to the malt notes, which then take a nice turn, sweetness lingers and the bitterness with a hot pepper comes through again and again, as does the muff note, which later disappears

    • Nose
      83 83
Peat and brine, band-aids, wet wool, charcoal, pipe tobacco, leather. Grandfather's old rocking chair in a glass.
    • Taste
      87 87
Oily, roasted oak and seaweed come first, though nicely coated in sweeter notes. Some tobacco and barley come through with decent peat smoke, but oak is persistent.
    • Finish
      86 86
Smoke, muscovado sugar, and cocktail berries are dominant the aftertaste, which is strangely not bad.

So much wood, without becoming bitter. A certain amount of fruitiness remains and at the end the peat also tastes good. The untypical of all previously tried Kilkerran. The barrel is massive in its influence. But exciting stuff.
    • Nose
Significantly spicy notes of wood in the nose, almost a little musty, I would type European oak, but have no idea of Calvados itself. Subtle fruit, slightly mineral, but the oak dominates.
    • Taste
Much wood in the mouth, quite astringent, very astringent, some light fruitiness is also present.
    • Finish
In the finish then just just furry, rarely had such a violent astringent influence.

Too be honest I am not too familiar with Calvados but the apple is there! The whisky flavor is a bit gone but quite interesting to smell. Also not too much smoke..

They know how to make great stuff in Campbeltown :-) Excellent baby with just 9 years.

You can taste the young spirit as it is a bit spritty in the finish.
All in all good dram but please do not invest more than 100€
This is a 70€ good investment. Just wait for similar releases for the future.

    very good as always, chapeau
90/100, perhaps 91 if the nose was a bit more expressive.
    • Nose
faint smoke and lot of campeltown dirt, meaning soot and ashes, dust and sawdust. a certain fruitiness which is hard to pin down as usual .
I´m a fan of kilkerran but to be honest, this one isn´t very different from what we expect from kilkerran imho! rather simple, spirit driven stuff, good as always. but I cannot get any calvados influence out of it.
    • Taste
perfect balance between fruitiness, sweetness and faint smoke. goddamn, what sort of fruit is it? I really don´t know but it´s so lovely!
      no, i wouldn´t say it´s apples. anyway...
there´s also a little salt involved.
a wonderful palate but what did I expect?
    • Finish
      super clean, medium length

  10. bert61nl did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

Every bottle I have seen says: No. of bottles: 228 of 288.

Does this mean that only 228 bottles out of this cask of 288 were bottled for the Hanseatische Weinhandelsgesellschaft?

    Does anybody know?
