N: This is a review of the 22yo in comparison to the 25yo Glenalba WB that was released by Clydesdale at the same time - a bottle I've got to know rather  well. So this younger 22yo appears lighter in [fino?] sherry than the thicker and/or sweeter oloroso or PX finishes and with less rancio than the 25yo - one that's sherry heavy. This has more of a [bourbon] caramac=toffee sweetness at its core with a nutty, dirty-oil grittiness, but the weight is predominantly sweet with ripe red [pippin] apples, sweet-yet-bright citrus and a sharper spirity ginger, toffee malt. Furthermore it appears somewhat more transparent in the fact that the barley spirit speaks fairly clearly with a style more akin to 80's style malt - fino again? I rather like the nose.

T: Less sherried weight than the 25yo, allowing more room for a crisper yet clumsy spirity arrival with a ripe-fruit~malty development - somewhat bumpy travel but slowly moving to a longer ripe yet softer development into the finish reveals its soft spot with a waxy-malty mouthfeel=chew.

F: Rather short with some caramac, candle wax-malt and something darker [those ropey old casks revealed] - but the waxy malt finish remains with a little twang. Short finish, yet one that lingers far more substantially at the finish.

C: I like the nose certainly and the finish isn't half bad, yet it's a rocky road in the middle but with a few trinkets along the way. Some may prefer this lighter, more spirit driven 22yo to the 25yo. Both are very reasonable malts for a very reasonable price but I find the 25yo has more than just the edge with better form overall although the 22yo has a little more vibrancy and spirit transparency. Maybe i’ll blend the two!

Color
Amontillad
Nose
