Whisky Reviews for Ben Nevis 1996 MBa

7 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 86.06 points

  1. Calmar scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Molt is very simple, young, but pleasant, there are few derivatives, but they are well balanced and, for all straightness, they set a certain depth.
    • Nose
Restrained, dry, sweet, light honey pastry notes with tingling mineral shades - grindstone, stone crumbs, tablets in the shell, light vegetable shades - cabbage, daikon; some fresh wood, lemon peel.
    • Taste
Sufficiently dense, woody-mineral with an admixture of mineral-industrial hues, metallic notes, tablet sweetness, lemon in sweet tea.
    • Finish
Soft, warming, sweet and sour with a metallic hue, light sulfur-mineral tones, a little ginger, a slight, sour tingling, as if licked a battery.

A very nice one, especially the oily feeling on the tongue is outstanding for me.
    • Nose
Impressive, apple and bulb. Really fresh and fruity. Sweet raisins, hints of sweet wine. It pinches a bit in the nose (50.9 Vol.%).
    • Taste
The tastes evolves in the mouth to a fully and strong taste with an oily, viscous behaviour. A lot of spices, nicely wooden. Like malt and honey, raisins or sweet grapes.
    • Finish
Bitter and herbs/spices again, dark chocolate and oak.

    Single Whiskybase sample.
    • Nose
Odd. Chalk. Butter. Beer/hops. Raisins. Herbs. Greenhouse. A little dirty. Soot.
    • Taste
Creamy, honey. Green apples. Herbal bitters.
    • Finish
      Medium. More drying oak. Beer.

    Serge says:

Ben Nevis 19 yo 1996/2015 (50,9%, Maltbarn, bourbon, 121 bottles)
Colour: white wine. Nose: the narrowest so far, with some fresh butter,
custard, lager, and lamp oil at first nosing, then rather porridge and,
once again, chalk. Much less ‘wham-bam’ than the sherried 1998 for
sure. With water: the trademark sourness is back. Craft ales and ciders.
Mouth (neat): creamier and fresher, certainly cleaner than most Ben
Nevisses. Tangerines and apples (goldens), with this feeling of Fanta
again. Fizzy orange juice. Not too ripe apricots. With water: becomes
rounder, creamier, and more on tinned fruits (peaches). There’s also a
little porridge again in the background, with touches of ginger and
white pepper. Finish: medium, rather clean for Ben Nevis. Some muscovado
sugar. Comments: another one that’s excellent, it’s just a notch less
    idiosyncratic. SGP:551 - 85 points.
