Whisky Reviews for Clynelish 1997 AI

  1. Archer scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
Beautiful fruit notes of green apples and ripe pears. Gooseberries are also available. A thick spoon of honey. Bright chocolate crumble, toffee sweets. The malt makes the nose overall a bright, fruity, airy impression, but also lets through a few flavors of wood. At the back, some alcohol comes to the fore, which then turns off in menthol. The scent of a shower powder with Waldmeister flavor pulls through.
    • Taste
Dry, not too strong. An estimated 46%. Flourish mouthfeel, dry chocolate crumbs, rolled in honey. Slightly salty. The remains permanently dry, shows a lot of oak and now also herbs. Here comes the wax. But woody, he has a few years under his belt. Salted raisins.
    • Finish
Medium long and still dry, with oak, raisins, honey and a fine layer of salt.

This is the kind of person I would presume to suspect that I would have recognized him blindly as a Clynelish. Nice waxy and fruity on the nose (beeswax, honeycomb, apricot), as the wood spice is too pronounced. In places it almost seems to have gotten a little too much barrel, but all in all the additional oak only makes it more complex and deeper.

Simply delicious. 1: 1 the nose in taste, plus a few surprising roasted aromas (charcoal, grill smoke) that make the whole thing even more exciting. Refreshingly tangy citrus notes and crunchy wood spice from the barrels. The 46% fit perfectly and leave nothing to be desired. Round thing.

Dark chocolate with a light corn sweetness and subtle pepperiness. Very tasty. Don't stop for too long, instead whet the appetite for the next sip. Minimally smoky in the reverberation.

Unfortunately, a slight rotten wood note after a few minutes, that means a point deduction from 87 to 79.

Strange and rather atypical aromas for a Clynelish. Overall, however, a very tasty whisky.
