    07/29/2021:
Ledaig traditionally captures with its expressive youth, but in this case the expressiveness is achieved by a degree. The latter is interesting, reinforces each element, kicks a little, but does not exceed the limit of comfort. Powerful! In medical quantity very ok!

    Chorizo!

This 17 years old Ledaig has an ABV of 65.8%... excuse me? One can only conclude that the spirit went into the cask at a much higher ABV than the industry standard of 63.5%, no? Just to be sure, I’ll have some water on hand, otherwise this might prove quite painful.

Well, on the nose the high ABV is not hurting me at all. It certainly does not burn. I do get an immediate smoke development with marzipan, pine nuts and chorizo! I do believe this is the first time that I get chorizo in a whisky. Next some smoked ham, some bicycle tires and a hint of apricots (which is a good thing, as it’s a sherry cask after all!). A teaspoon of water turns it a lot sweeter and a touch herbal. For the nose, it’s a good thing.

It’s quite powerful on the palate though… just shy of burning, but doable without water – if only just. Again a lot of peat smoke, a bucketful of brackish water and some medicinal notes. If you want to discover anything sweet, you’ve got your work cut out for you. An apple, maybe? Not much else. With water, it turns a lot sweeter, but not much more fruity. This is now more like sugar instead of fruit. But it does make it quite more palatable.

The finish is long – no surprise – and smoky and finally shows some sweetness in the form of vanilla and apple juice. With water, the finish is very sweet, like smoky sugar water, should such a thing exist.

This was a sherry cask? Could have fooled me! But it’s very good despite the high ABV. A very interesting bottling by Rattray.

    • Nose
      78 78
Incense, peat smoke, burnt dried leaves, freshly cracked wood, pine cones, rubber, brine, salami, smoked ham.
    • Taste
      86 86
Oily, heavy smoke entry, medicinal, though a hint of sugary sweetness is noted. Alcohol and smoke dominates, but balance is quite good.
    • Finish
      88 88
Balances even better on the finish, but still the smoke and alcohol stay on a challengingly high level. Not for the faint of heart.

"A lot of alcohol in the nose, but it fades over time, the smoke is not as intense as Ledaig's, so there's a musty note, could be cabbage, it's not like the cowshed, I do not think so bad. Unfortunately, the nose drifts into the sour with increasing time. The taste is incredibly fat. The mouth gets really nice and dry and contracts. Unfortunately, the finish is too alcoholic. No water helps there either "

Who can help me? Why after 17 years, such an alcohol content? The angels will not completely surrender this drop to the earthlings because of its qualities, contrary to their other habits ... or do we have a truly heavenly present before us? But seriously: was a higher-grade distillate filled here than usual? Probably quite undiluted 70%. And then extremely balanced ripening climate? Or American conditions, where the alcohol content can even increase? Barrel somehow isolated or sealed while hooping? But how come these great flavors so ingeniously into the whisky? Age information wrong? Alcohol content measured incorrectly? I almost do not believe it either. Remarkable is this Rattray so because of its taste and the technical details.
    • Nose
Since I hesitate the first sip with delight and could sniff for minutes! Rounded and a bit wild at the same time: smoke and peat, orange peel.
    • Taste
Liquorice, smoke and peat; full-bodied, the alcohol carries only and does not bother in the least.
    • Finish
Yes, and this unlikely finale, which opens wide. No dryness due to the sherry barrel. Simply everything suuuuuuper! Fruity aromatic with smoke, peat soil and peppermint.
