This is a very well composed vatted malt (malt blend). On the nose the smokiness is quite restrained but on the palate every flavour is interspersed with wood smoke and subtle medicinal smoke. The nose is quite delicate but the palate is sturdy and robust. Be careful with water in this one as it seems to loose its balance on the nose and on the palate mainly accentuates the smokiness.
All in all a lovely and interesting dram to sip.
    • Nose
A rich, delicate and wel balanced whisky with aromas of subtle sweet sherry, subtle smoke, brown sugar, red apple, pear, caramelized pineapple, dried fruits (apricots, yellow plums), honey, old rope, cloth, licorice root, bayleaf, roasted almonds, subtle medicinal tones, earthy tones, musty cellar, milk chocolate, cloves, cinnamon, allspice, angelica root, sweet tobacco, vanilla and creamy oak.
    • Taste
A rich, full, creamy and powerful whisky with aromas of peat smoke, sweet sherry, fresh fruits, jam, dried fruits (plums, apricots, cherries, figs, dates) medicinal tones, star anise, licorice root, earthy tones (forrest ground and mushrooms) dark honey, salted caramel, cocoa powder, cedarwood, sweet tobacco, tannins, vanilla, spices (pepper, ginger, cinnamon, clove and subtle nutmeg), wax, musty cellar, old books and creamy oak.
    • Finish
A long, rich and slightly drying finish with aromas of peat smoke, ash, subtle medicinal tones (wee bit tar and iodine), pepper, backing spices, sweet sherry, licorice root, digestives and oak.

Stated age is 8yo but I certainly doubt that this is an overal age. My guess is that it’s the youngest part of this blend and a big part of it is substantially older.
    • Nose
It’s a good nose! Earthy, nutty, sweet and red fruits, and a very light hint of peat on the nose. A whiff of young bourbon influenced whisky. There is also a nice musty layer in it. Something I like a lot! With water a little more coastal freshness joins in. But it’s absolutely not a good swimmer. The warmth of the palm of your hand will do the job.
    • Taste
On the taste the peat is rather dominant. Something I didn’t expect after nosing it. Also it’s minirally. Tastewise this whisky is actually quite a surprise. Again earthy and red fruits. Vanilla, caramel and Charred oak is in the game. The body is rather thin and fragile. When you don’t add water, it will survive. If you do add some, be very carefull, it will drown quite fast. Quite some older casks are involved if you ask me.
    • Finish
The finish is a rather long (as quite usually with peated fellows). There is a pleasant play between peat and wood influence. There is a pleasant tingling dryness in the finish.

I get quite a mature feeling after the finish. I have to say that I walked around these bottles for years. This time I was confronted by a sample included in a package and I find this one quite a surprise! I think it is a lot of Highland park and some peated sherried bunna, the others I don’t recognize. My guess is that the youngest part is bourbon matured Highland Park for the peaty punch. The rest is older matured and less peat driven but sherry dominated.
