Benromach 2005-2014, 8 years, Hermitage Finish, 45% alc. Original bottling. Aging: 6 years in Bourbon casks, 27 months in Hermitage casks

Nose: Subtle peat smoke in complex fruit notes, difficult to differentiate. Maybe tropical fruits, fruit salad. In addition, eucalyptus and slightly medicinal tones, smoke, ash and some cinnamon.

Palate: Very intense, again a balancing act between spice and fruit as well as a slightly medicinal smoke. Then follow bitter spices, cloves, berries, cinnamon, cardamom and mint. Very complex.

Finish: Long and spicy, nice sweetness, the smoke weakens. Instead, beautiful oak wood aromas come into play here.

Conclusion: not very easy, very experimental and does not find a really clear line. Not recommended for beginners. 83/100 points (2015)

Try it out during the 24th Cologne Stammtisch.
Quite nice and drinkable Benromach, still has that organic spelled note that I don't really like about Benromach, but otherwise knows how to appear with nice flavors and no missing notes.
    • Nose
Resin, honey, apple with honey, autumn leaves, spelled bread, grapes and cereals, toffee
    • Taste
Bitter orange, rye bread, autumnal apple, charred oak, autumn leaves, tobacco, liquorice, dried fruits, nice oak
    • Finish
Oak nicely present, autumn leaves, cereals, resin, medium length

    Color: amber

    - a really good 10 year single malt, but it has something
very dominant thing that stays in the mouth
    - no whisky for the whole evening
    - as an overall view, at € 55, it is rather too high
    • Nose
very intense fruity nose, the wine character superimposes the bourbon character, intense sweet grapes
    • Taste
Powerful start, sweetness, dried fruits (dates, figs), lots of oak, light pepper, very strong character, complex
    • Finish
      medium-long finish;
      hardly any echo

The smell is more extraordinary than the taste.
    • Nose
      40 40
Slightly smoky, some honey, some milk and milk chocolate.
    • Taste
      40 40
Taste is distinctly woody for only ten years.
    • Finish
      40 40
Becomes medium bitter on the tip of the tongue.

The smoke stays pleasantly in the background for a long time, the whisky is mainly spicy and grassy.
    • Nose
At the beginning very grassy and earthy on the nose like a moss-covered, dense forest floor. Light peat and smoke notes are behind it. Then comes the wine: red grapes, fruit and berries turn into raisins. Above all there is a constant spice with old wood and cloves.
    • Taste
In the mouth the Benromach is again grassy with light smoke and a lot of pepper at the tip of the tongue at the beginning. This is followed by the light and sweet wine barrel with its spicy wood.
    • Finish
The finish is old, woody and spicy with a slight sweetness.

Hermitage is always a divisive finish, I think it's nice with the Benromach character.
    • Nose
Sulphur and phosphorus. Orange liqueur. Smoked meats, rubber, forest fruits and menthol.
    • Taste
Grapefruit, gooseberry and dark chocolate. Acidic wines and spicy oak.
    • Finish
      Medium length, spicy, dry.

Nice whisky. Nose and aroma almost identical, the fruit did not come through me so. The finish is its weak spot otherwise a really exciting whisky from which a whole bottle is worth. Benromach is already fun - 09.12.2017
    • Nose
Musty, bacon, salami, smoked aromas, earthy, dirty, these heavy aromas cover the fruit, spicy, gravy, nutmeg, pink pepper, raisins, red berries
    • Taste
Very dry the first sip, earthy, greasy, buttery, sweet, creamy, creamy, syrup, mild, pink pepper, spicy, slightly woody, espresso, honey
    • Finish
      Short

    • Nose
The smell of fermented fruit, old leather, worn, clay-encrusted oak planks. Coffee beans. Cool smoke from a smokehouse. In the background a damp forest floor.
    • Taste
Mild and sweet, much less dirty, as suspected by the nose. Milk chocolate, cocoa, freshly brewed coffee, almonds, honey. Light tartaric acid.
    • Finish
Medium to short, chocolate and a little bit of smoke.

  19. Whiskybayer scored this whisky 89 points Expert Junior

Really oily and full of whisky. Beautiful oak note, the red wine barrel comes through well with fruits. Beautiful vanilla note, which is really intense. Everything is carried with a hint of smoke, which is not dominated, but always felt. Long finish, sweet and fruity with cherries and chocolate. Well done. You can tell the great barrels properly. There was no saving here.

Nose: beautiful dirty nose with bacon and sulfur, delicate smoke surrounds the vinous sweetness, sour apples, orange peel, a hint of spicy oak. The is in the Nose, at least for me, really delicious. Not very complex, but what he has makes your mouth water.
Taste: like the nose a straightforward but strong onset with peppery oak, sulfur, citrus fruits, dry wine sweetness and aromatic smoke. The smoke and dryness then dominate the unfortunately only medium-long finish. Here is the weak point of the drop. The finish shows all the aromas of nose and onset but it's just a short firework that turns into smoke and oak and fades quickly.
Top whisky that could easily have traveled 90 on a long finish. I like it but so very good for the price.

So far, I have found all the Benromachs tasted both on the nose and on the palate very convincing. They are very balanced, honest and powerful whiskys with interesting finishes. The only downside is the lack of alcohol for me. With 46% or 48% they could fully develop their existing potential and would be for me then clearly in the absolute league!
    • Nose
In the nose comes immediately a greasy leathery spice, a mild smoke, sweet orange juice, green freshly peeled apples, cane sugar, some oak
    • Taste
Despite the not too strong 45% a really strong start with a very sweet fruity spiciness, pepper sharpness, ripe citrus fruits, ginger. Some oak from the wine barrels also beats through and, together with the dryness of the wine, is a nice counterpoint to the fruit and the smoke.
    • Finish
At the finish you miss a bit the pressure of a higher alcohol content - everything could come a little stronger and crisper. It leaves a nice smoke, sweet spice, green apples and fruit acid hang, although not very long.

  23. Tommyknocker scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

The nose is really great, like an old Islayers, the taste and especially the finish can not quite keep up. But I like Benromach really well. Great Destilleriecharakter!
    • Nose
amazing how the Benromach basic character burns into the brain. Although probably I have not had the still for at least 3 months in the glass you recognize him immediately. Beautiful mild smoke with bread spice and salt enemas, actually like a coastal painting. At first the wine finish stays wonderful, only very slowly, dry, heavy sweet fruit notes are added, raspberries like the port keg. Hintsraus some gravy. Delicious! Reminds me of the 21 year old OA Bowmore from the Portfass.
    • Taste
round, creamy onset, heavy dark honey sweetness. Maple syrup and woody spice. Very full-bodied for the age and the drinking strength. Nice slightly dirty touch, as port water, old, oily rag comes to it. Has something!
    • Finish
Here he loses something, rather short, wood and some sweetness.

@ captain_k: He is really very daytime dependent. Yesterday hui - today only mediocre. Luckily my sample of you is big enough to test it a few more times - notes and rating follow.
Currently I tend like you to 87 pts.

The consistent licorice note I like, from the wine-maturing but I have expected more specific influences.
    • Nose
Gingerbread, shortbread, redcurrants, strawberry yoghurt, with a woody sweetness, vanilla comes through, behind it only subtle smoke, herbal tea, pine needles
    • Taste
Seasoning and stronger smoke superimpose the weak sweetness, slightly alcoholic, the wine note comes through weak, sage and licorice
    • Finish
balanced, again slightly licorice and cough sweets, develops relatively long

A difficult malt. This artificial sweetness in the nose and the finish tells me a lot during a sip and not at the other. Here you can see clearly what a Nachreifung in a red wine barrel so everything can do from a malt.
    • Nose
very spicy with oak and dark spices (nutmeg, clove); but also a dark, fruity sweetness; Baked apples and plums; In addition, an aroma of cognac and red wine mixes; with time it gets sweeter, but this sweetness seems a bit artificial and put on
    • Taste
bitter at first and then it gets sweet; again dark fruits; Oak and chocolate; nice malty and slightly dry
    • Finish
medium; again this artificial sweetness; Prunes remain on the palate; the second sip is dominated by the spice

It’s a very affordable dram, at a modest age, and surprisingly complex and balanced.

Tasted at a Malt Mongers Israel Evening and Reviewed in my blog: https://iwriteaboutstuffilike.com/2016/06/18/malt-mongers-israel-red-wine-finish-night/
    • Nose
Sulphury. Match heads. Leather. Creme brulee. Mulch. Seville oranges. Toffee.
    • Taste
Spice. Red grapefruit. Cacao. Bitter seaweed.
    • Finish
Long. Plenty woodspice. More grapefruit. Bitter wood.

  31. Bosi scored this whisky 82 points Specialist

The wine finish is less dominant than expected, yet clearly recognizable. The wood notes surprised me with such a young whisky.
    • Nose
The nose has three stages. First, I smell wood and furniture polish, then a light smoke comes through, and finally the fruity and sweet notes of strawberries, plums and candies.
    • Taste
Now the small age shows through a lot of chili. Again, traces of smoke and oak can be tasted. There are also grapes and a light acidity.
    • Finish
Even in the medium-long finish there is a certain sharpness with the maltyness of Porter.

  32. Torfding scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

A very interesting Benromach with a slightly intrusive wine finish. Actually a good drop, but personally I would prefer the two 10s and the 15s.
    • Nose
many hard-to-allocate fruit notes, vinous with a subtle hint of menthol, heavy sweetness, warm apple, citrus fruit, vanilla, slightly lightly scorched wood and a hint of cinnamon
    • Taste
Fruit acid (kiwi), oak, red and sour fruits (but rather no cherries, maybe a little sour cherries), spiced wine, gentle smoke, some pepper
    • Finish
medium to long, spicy, oak, some chocolate, a hint of beef

  33. PeterCr scored this whisky 86 points Expert Junior

Good whisky for the rather young age. Casks are recognizable. Quite a bit better then the Sassicaia because it's a lot better balanced.

    Score 84-86 pts.
    • Nose
Medium impact nose. Less alcoholic then the Sassicaia version. Nice light smoke coming through. Dark cherries, some spices (vanilla, pepper),
    • Taste
Oily, little bite (pepper) in the beginning but followed quickly by some smooth sweetness (brown sugar, honey, cherries, melon). Some espresso as well.
    • Finish
Short to medium long, ending sweet (honey, liquorice) with some tannines (from the wine casks probably) coming through. After some time in the glass the finish gets better as the sweetness opens up ang gets more fruity.

  34. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

A dream of a wine finish. One of the best that I have had so far.
    • Nose
Great, sweet nose. Beautiful fruity notes of wine, very deep and full, leather, cloves, some smoke, some oak.
    • Taste
Full aroma, red fruits, sweetish spicy notes, Christmas spices, oak, light smoke.
    • Finish
      Wine, oak, spices, chocolate.

  35. Dieter_W scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

Great honest malt. Offers a lot for his 8 years.
He has also received something from his Brennereicharakter. No snap for his age but ok. I like it much better than the peat
    • Nose
Wow great nose What is the smoke?
Very nice orange notes, wood notes, baked apple inVilla-sauce with cinnamon scattered then come ham cubes behind.
      Awesome
    • Taste
Latte then again wood - smoke and then shadow morels The alcohol is great involved. Very complex
    • Finish
      medium
