[June, 2018]  Another sample that I bought at the Limburg Whisky Fair this year.  These "Manager's Dram" releases (one per year) were sold to Diageo employees only and they are prohibited from selling them before they enter the retirement age (or leave the company).  Nonetheless, a lot of bottles found their way into the market and so we all can enjoy these drams - some are truly great, others average only.  So let us check this over-proof Mannochmore with astonishing 66% abv.

The colour is deep copper and the texture shows small sticky tears with very slow legs.  The nose is rather punchy and shy what is no wonder at 66% abv.  After some time of breathing it offers a fine herbal-driven sherry profile hat is nicely balanced but not overly complex.  Not a single sulphur atom that I can smell what is great!  The whisky arrives hot and peppery in the mouth (the high abv takes its toll) but it nicely coats a large part of it with no distracting moments beside the hotness.  The taste is sugary sweet with just a minor sherry flavour and very shy herbs and spices in the background.  The finish is long and sweet with a minor drying and astringent feeling (plastics, metals).  This dram surely cries for water!  Some water does not really change a lot (it just releases a lot of spices on the palate) but after adding a fair share both the nose and the taste open up.  More aromas and flavours are released but still it is not a complex profile at all.  I like this dram best when reduced to about 48% abv.

This is a good quality Manager's Dram but I would not call it a highlight of the series.  It is flawless and interesting to nose a 66% abv dram (give it ten minutes to unfold at least) but both the taste and finish are average only.  It is more a dram to explore (what is somewhat challenging) than an "easy sip"...

Quite tough whisky. Above rate has been got after adding water. In 'raw' state it's very uncomfortable for perception

difficult, edgy, dirty, bitchy - delicious but no revelation - I had better manager drams

fresh in the glass, it smells bitter and not so tasty - I let it air and add a few drops of water.

The missing notes disappear directly - grassy honey notes, and a hint of Canabis rise from the glass, behind dusty oak cabinet wall, grape seeds, floor wax, a hint of smoke, strawberry jam

to start the beautiful 70s profile, subtle mined subtle smoke, dusty oak wood, strawberry jam bar, lemon drop, mint, a certain mineral-soapy touch on the bitterness hangs - if you drink smaller sips he remains delicate and does not tip over
    • Finish
      87 87
herbaceous-herbaceous with subtle fruit - quite long, while peppery, waxy,

Serge from Whiskyfun says:Mannochmore 18 yo (66%, OB, Manager's dram, 1800 Bts., 1997) 66%? Shall we get our kicks from this one? Colour: gold. Nose: starts right on wet paint, cut cactus and newspaper of the day (ink), aspirin. Sure you can nose it but it’s extremely austere, although quite elegant I must say. With water (aaah): gets closer to the grain and the mash, with also whiffs of raw wool, motor oil… Mineral. Not exactly sexy but this one is kind of intellectual. Mouth (neat): extremely powerful to say the least, bitter… Hard to swallow. Notes of ultra-strong herb liqueur. With water: it’s more lemony (crystallized lemon zests) and more on porridge. Finish: long, still austere, very grassy, quite demanding. A very serious malt, sort of respectable but not made to give you much pleasure (not unlike my math teacher, 30 years ago – I hope she’s still alive but does not read Whiskyfun!). But it’s very interesting malt. 83 points.
