Drunk from a freshly opened bottle, it was truly excessive: the sherry kills the distillate. After a long time, I found it improved, nose expressive and very pleasant. Palate still too monotonous, medium finish. A style of monster sherry but not really mine, too sweet for my taste.

I've tasted these on multiple occasions and they always taste as good. Every fantastic whisky during that moment looks borderline bland in comparison. This whisky is so pronounced, complex yet elegant and I'm still convinced this was made for me. The cardboard, bitter chocolate and raisins remind me of a dusty, industrial, almost abandoned-like tobacco factory my grandfather used to own.

Marketing-wise simple but effective as well. There's a certain price point where I prefer not to open bottles but these ones will be a unique exception! This series is my holy grail so far.

    What a board!
A really tasty whisky to sip a glass of all evening. If it didn't go through the roof in terms of price, I would buy a third bottle right away. With my two bottles, which I was allowed to call my own, I was lucky in terms of price.
It is certainly one of my favorite whiskys.
    • Nose
      92 92
A strong smell of raisins, dried fruit, roasted almonds, leather and spices fills the air. A hint of smoke joins this fat aroma. You can smell the whisky for an hour before drinking the first drop. With a little water there is more oak in the smell, a little less leather, but a little more tobacco and cocoa and vanilla.
    • Taste
      92 92
Also in the taste a strong start. I drank it diluted with some still water. A fat palette of flavors unfolds, the tongue is full. You immediately notice the dry oak, has a sweetness and raisins on the tongue, and coffee comes through now. It is very spicy and the taste reminds you of some tar or leather. Drinking comes with more smoke than smell. However, the distillery character still comes through very well here - better in taste than in smell.
    • Finish
      91 91
The finish is long and warm. From the whisky you have something longer on the tongue. The sweetness and the leather remain, as do the sherry aromas of dark fruits and raisins. The smoke aromas are also clearly visible in the finish and the typical Bowmore note comes through here.

NAS or not, a Bowmore to my liking. Powerful and intense with a strong sherry influence. If only it weren't so expensive...
My tip: The 10y Inspired by Devils Cask goes in that direction and is a cheaper alternative.
    • Nose

56.7% are extremely well integrated - and this Bowmore is definitely complex, unfortunately beguilingly good for NAS.
    • Nose
Ui, lots of cinnamon, plum compote, Krschmarmelade, dark chocolate with chilli, vanilla cream with white pepper, in one word: delicious. After adding some water, freshly unpacked cigarettes (the only thing I like about cigarettes in terms of aroma)
    • Taste
Easy to drink neat, very close to the tongue, with a palpable intense mango puree with pork fillet flavors - great in itself.
With 1-2 drops of watery water then again an increase in the direction of sweet and sour fruits and freshly paved road as well as beeswaxed country house planks.
    • Finish
Delicious, like a few drops of H2O, the tropical fruits drift past you as a jelly, rain-soaked asphalt and a warm kettle grill say hello before the evening ends harmoniously.

    • Nose
      89 89
      Strong pepper
Smoked dried figs, roasted almond, sherry
Air dryness from raisin, creamy chocolate, coffee and some old leather
Blackcurrant, some Mandarin orange and nutmeg.
Earthy from the bottom of the glass rim
Sweet sour stoned fruits fro the top of the glass rim
Roasted malt and citrus from emptied glass.
    • Taste
      84 84
Dried fruit. Toffee, quickly becomes watery
starts light, spiciness quickly goes up
      dark fruit, but over-spicy
not much change on the palate
      Oily after 5s
    • Finish
      84 84
Overwhelming ginger leftover for several seconds
dark fruit jam (like grapes, cherry)
      syrup, tannin
      Woody note after 1min
Spicy and resinous bitter towards the end.

  26. Saftkenner scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

Very intense and fruity bottling in which the smoke is not in the foreground. A great experience, but the price is ultimately well above what is on offer here.
    • Nose
      87 87
Nice intense. The smoke is clearly noticeable, but not in the foreground. Strong, slightly acidic fruit notes emerge at the same level. Cherry, red currants and passion fruit. Lots of barrel flavor and red wine.
    • Taste
      88 88
Voluminous and powerful, and also somehow smooth. Peppery sharpness and yet the alcohol is well integrated (I had diluted it to 51%). Very oily and dry. Ash, cherry, passion fruit. The smoke is also (additionally) clearly perceptible.
    • Finish
      86 86
Medium-long finish. What remains is dark chocolate, espresso, ash, cherry, and light acidity (passion fruit).

  27. Numwierum scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

Smell: Dark red fruits, plums, churches, strong aromas of raisins and sherry, nuts. The smoke is very well hidden behind the strong fruit notes, it looks slightly greasy.
Taste: Again in the taste, strong red fruit notes, full and creamy, orange peel, some ginger and charcoal.
Finish: Quite short and somewhat disappointing, dry, chocolate and a little spice.
Conclusion: I think the smell is great, nice and fruity with a pleasant smoke. In terms of taste, it starts off quite well, but then quickly decreases in its positive intensity.

Very beautiful whisky, very intense, with a lot of sherrynotes. Fruity and chocolate, with a nice combination of bonfire smoke.
    • Nose
      89 89
Fruity, prunes, bonfire smoke, even some rum, and chocolate. Leather as well, alcohol modestly on the background. Raisins, and a salty touch.
    • Taste
      89 89
Strong and intense, bonfire smoke, raisins, prunes, leather, chocolate. Very full taste. Honey as well. Then a sour note appears underneath.
    • Finish
      88 88
Still strong, very intense. Bonfire smoke, honey, chocolate, a little red fruit remains. Long finish, cigar tobacco.

    wow, it's huge!
For me, however, the overall impression is too dark, too violent ... overwhelming
from the smoke it was OK
    • Nose
light sherry, old oak, minimal smoke, spicy, minerally becomes stronger, red berries !!, light ham, slightly medicinal, tart herbs, light orange
with water: sweeter, cola, leather, chocolate ~ 60%, nutty, mix of oil, workshop and gas station
    • Taste
oily, full and strong on the palate
the impressions are violent .. almost kill you
Oak, spicy, leather, asphalt and more
with water: softer, graphite from pencil, slightly rubber
    • Finish
      long
light oak, sherry, bitter, very spicy and tart, dark, espresso
      with water: moist earth

Nose: sherry combined with smoke. Some chocolate cherry
Taste: Strong and strong accent of slightly dry sherry with a combination of smoke. Additionally, chocolate and plums everywhere. The whole thing is very nicely folded. Lumpy in taste.
Rating: 88 | 100 Long, strong finish with a sweet profile turning into dryness.

  33. JoshNRW scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
Very dark and a bit deep, but you notice the young age (?) And the percentages somehow - but not negatively; just a statement. A round nose, I fluctuate between 87 and 88 points, but it is rather too one-dimensional. I have dark dark chocolate, gummy bears, currants and blackberries. A nice and round profile, but not a super exciting one.
    • Taste
Again, balanced, round, a bit pop, sharp start, but without the alcohol burning. If you want to taste chili here, it can be. Sweet, dark associations without going very deep. I don't feel smoke in the taste either.
    • Finish
      Delicious whisky

    • Taste

  36. Stanzeflasche scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

Quite intense smoke, but very fine. Almost a fog, with a hint of humidity. Added to this are very juicy red fruits, strawberries, raspberries, cherries. The marriage is perfect, sealed by a touch of heather earth, bark, ferns. In the mouth, it is initially a little light, then the pepper rises, very aggressive. Redcurrant, papaya, passion fruit. A final that moves, slightly earthy, but also fruity. Tomato juice.

It takes a lot of time and some water to develop. Then the expected nuances of the Oloroso and PX barrel come to light.
    Surprisingly little smoke.

  39. penumbra scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

Successfully defeated the first edition of Talisker DE and Kilchoman Shirley's single barrel to reach the threshold of 90, but it may be a common problem of peat whisky, often through the peat smell to create a warm bonfire or thick smoke. The illusion, but if you remove the taste and only feel the body of the wine, it is actually just a passerby level. The scores that are important to me, such as grease, wax, and stickiness, are missing again.
    • Nose
Peat, rained soil, cinnamon, candied fruit, preserved fruits, plum, sherry, chocolate lava cake, leather, tar, smoked, freshly popped stove, minimal seaside flavors (sea salt, seaweed, iodine) ), The barley under the peat is sweet (similar to Laphroaig).
    • Taste
Subjective: A bonfire was set up on the beach to make a fruit-grilled fish, and then one accidentally knocked it over to the ground, just covering the flames.
Objective: Sweet at the beginning, accompanied by rich and juicy cranberries, cherries and red berries (the fruit taste is very fresh at this time, there is a loss of sweet and sour, not similar to preserved fruit), followed by iodine water Sea salt and cream are excessive, and finally the peat smell comes over. The damp soil, the extinguished campfire, the sweetness of barley is intertwined with a small amount of black chocolate or the thickness of Chinese medicine.
    • Finish
Slowly burning peat, long and warm, pepper, cinnamon, preserved fruit, thick smoke.

  49. Bowmore Axel scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Nose: Sweet, dark sherry flavors. A hint of smoke. Caramel and vanilla. A touch of sea flavor and very easy farmy.

Taste: Immediately nice sweet sherry flavors. Clearly astringent. Then coffee - roasting flavors. Caramel and some spice flavors. Bitter - sweet and a little more salt.

Finish: Astringent. Coffee - toasty flavors. At the end slightly bitter oak and spices.

Note: Ideal for lovers of sherry whisky. From me there's 87 points because of the somewhat one dimensional pronounced Scherry character (only !!!).
The first-fill sherry casks have done a good job here.

Supplement: In the beginning, I gave only 84 points, but after a few months, after the bottle slowly learned something, the whisky has become much better. Less sherrylastig. Sweetness and some salt are added.
    Now there are 87 points.
Let's see how he can develop further.

The nose invites you to linger, the taste beats like a bomb, only the aftertaste is expandable (so ok, but not very exciting).
    • Nose
      90 90
If I had to spontaneously give the smell a color it would be purple, the overall impression is somehow cold or clear, I do not mean the temperature of the whisky, the smoke is nicely bound, slightly greasy and generally not very intrusive, sherry, fat, with nuts, but suddenly appears clearly pineapple, bittersweet chocolate, bitter cocoa, I have to call again Lumumba, alcohol top involved, clearly you realize that it is cask strength, but I would blindly never tap on 65 +%, again and again sweet, then red berries, raspberry, spicy tobacco, I like it
    • Taste
      91 91
creamy, short, but then comes intensively, sherry, raisins, espresso, dark chocolate, slightly floral, but I write deliberately not violets, some wood, overall rather dry, the second sip I deliberately concentrate on the smoke, but the remaining flavors strike so that you actually perceive it late, I'm just aware that there are 66.7%, where are they? is great without water
    • Finish
      88 88
in the back the mouthfeel becomes more and more dry, the mouth is full, grape skin, lighter ashy smoke is above all, smoke is actually only now aware, slightly nutty, a hint of acidity of the red berries, medium long

The Bowmore Devil's Casks Batch III is a good malt. Strong and especially for bowmore friends certainly a pleasure.
    • Nose
Yes, that's a deep sherry nose. Light bowmorer smoke, a bit of wet forest soil, a fresh breeze of alcohol. Dark plums, baked aromas are also reported, marjoram and some cardamom.
    • Taste
From the Nosingglas comes the Teufelsfassmalt with strong alcohol, earthiness, the Bowmore-Muffigkeit vulgo neat Hellfire and good vocal oak bitterness on the palate. The thing is not without reason 56.7% alcohol. Nothing for undecided; In heaven and in purgatory you drink something different.
    • Finish
In the finish dominate the slightly bitter oak, forest soil and herbal notes. And of course, the Bowmorerauch. This malt will be present for a long time. For bow-girl friends sure a pleasure.

Really decent and quite complex, and I rather tend to avoid Bowmore and peat/smoke in general.
    • Nose
Quite smoky on bonfire, grilled meat, cigarette ash. Some strawberry marmelade and orange zest. Nice.
    • Taste
Intense, packed with flavours and rich. Obviously young, spicy, but there is also a lot of nice red fruits, chocolate, toffee and smole. Wild, but really entertaining.
    • Finish
Quite long, spicy, on chilli, pepper, alcohol and sweet fruity marmelade.

Not my style. Over-infused wood influences are not a pre in my book. Sorry.
    • Nose
A soft sherry influence with ample red fruit. Smells like the effect in wine cask maturation too. Otherwise, there's not much there: a salty sea breeze and some vague mint. Later: cocao and orange. There is hardly any peat in the nose.
    • Taste
Very woody and spicy, as if I am drinking liquid wood. Sorry, too modern in style I guess. The wood and spices (clove, nutmeg) are just too over expressive. There is hardly anything else to be detected, only some vague red fruits.
    • Finish
Luckily not that long, again very spicy and woody, and a little on sherry and red fruit.

Now that I've tasted some of Bowmore's whiskys I just can not make friends with this distillery. This alcoholic touch and sharpness is completely out of place. The flavors are dull, are suppressed or can only be guessed. Especially with this whisky I would have expected more but in the end I'm not surprised. The only positive feature remains, as is often the sweetish aromatic smoke - 25.03.2017
    • Nose
Sweetish smoke, alcoholic sharpness, slightly fruity, strawberry jam, it is surprisingly restrained, after a while come tobacco, leather and oak flavors
    • Taste
Very strong, tart, alcoholic, spicy, chili, sweetish smoke, slightly fruity, more present in the palate than in the nose, yet many things remain hidden, it looks immature, young and unbalanced, smoke and aromas are just to be sensed like behind a fog bank, there is hardly anything going forward
    • Finish
      medium

  71. lachaineduwhisky did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

Moderate peat. Sherry quite deep but not very greedy. There is still chocolate and malt. Not very explosive. Some notes of alcohol. On the palate, intense, sherry, spices. It could be more enveloping. Final a little rough. With a little water, warmer on the toffee on the nose, but this peat is a little green and integrates badly enough. Honey and cooked wine. On the palate, milk chocolate and more. Only small treasure found in a corner: exotic fruits when you drink a glass of water right after. Frankly considering the price of the bottle and more, it's disappointing - I wonder what I would have said to the blind.

    Enthusiasm 2/5

A little too little sherry in the taste. I hoped for more balance (as in the nose). I prefer batch 1 over this.
    • Nose
Fine harmony between peat and sherry. Leather, caramel, green tea, grass, barley, wood.
    • Taste
Peat is dominant while the sherry is a bit in the background. Nuts, smoke, wood, sherry.

Very Cask driven (except in the final), but dreadfully well done and efficient.
    • Nose
A sweet and sweet peat, as well as a light and distant smoke encase dark chocolate cakes and Christmas beech. Over time, the smoke and peat vanish and give way to more sweet notes, fruit paste and cherry liquor.
    • Taste
Always sweet and sweet, even if at first the attack is rather dry, olorosso being more present. From the fig, always chocolate cake, then the PX arrives, fruit salad, raspberry, and a lot of smoke, much more present than the nose.
    • Finish
Peaty / sweet, and downright saline on the end. We find Islay, finally! Then a slight lingering bitterness points the tip of his nose.

  80. Hemdl scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

In short: I was expecting more, especially considering the price of just under € 180 for this NAS.
Consistently a - for me - unpleasant sharpness, many dull wood notes. Would I have tapped blindfolded on First Fill Oloroso and PX barrels? Hard to imagine. Priced even at the now significantly reduced price of just under 110-120 € very ambitious and I think that there as well from the House Bowmore finds better bottlings. This is certainly not a catastrophic or bad Malt, but just not really good.
    • Nose
Totally different than expected. Dry and slightly musty oak, citrus notes. Relatively dry and dry, much less red fruits than expected. Light smoke, minimal fruit sweetness. For some leather, which emphasizes the tart notes only once again.
Only after a while in the glass does the story become a bit more fruity. Here are some raisins and plums.
    • Taste
Hellish approach, pepper and chili shake hands. The entrance superimposed everything once, but this is not due to the volume percentages. Here is a little sweeter than in the nose, the fruits are more apparent, but can not prevail against the light smoke and violent tannins. Remains a bit dull and dry here. Remains with the onset of saliva something "spicy".
    • Finish
Medium long finish, characterized by licorice and smoke. In the end, a slight chili sharpness remains on the tongue, the mouth slightly dry.

devil! However where is the fire, ash, salt, brimstone and other dangerous
stuff!? This devil gives just sherry and without a doubt sweetness. Chocolate
and raisins, brown sugar, strawberries. This is more seductive. I would've

      far...
    • Taste
      This high
abv is easier to handle than I thought. Still the sherry dominates with
cherries dipped in chocolate, but there's a herbal side that grows. Ginger,
orange and leather. On the palate smoke seems to develop.

If you like hot & spicy this is it. A different whisky for the adventurous. I like it a lot, but expect it to soon be outside my budget.
    • Nose
Past the Immediate bucket load of sherry it can be further refined to cooked dark plums and black corinths. Some salty brine with a gentle bitter peat that get more prominent over time. Undertones reminecent of pure coco and old rum cask, and there's a potent cuban cigar lurking around.

The ABV is very noticable, but more like extremly hot spice rather than just alcohol.
      A very powerful nose indeed.
    • Taste
Initially not as hot as expected, as it starts with licorice and slightly bitter herbs. Then an intriguing feeling as the chilli pepper like spice starts to bite the sides of the tounge at the same time as a very sweet dark chocolate cream spreads in the rest of the mouth. Then the sweetness turns more towards sherry and dark fruits.
    • Finish
Very pleasant lingering sweetness, however it is the warmth and slight burn of the chilli like spice that lasts the longest. Breath carefully and there's a hint of peat and drying oaky vanilla.

After trying something back and forth, I come to the conclusion that it is very delicious in cask strength, but personally tastes the best with a little water (about half a teaspoon on 2cl)
    • Nose
surprisingly little smoke, nice decent campfire, harsh dark chocolate, prunes, maybe cherry, rum raisins, also the alcohol you can feel undiluted, of course, strong flavors but nothing dominant, everything is well balanced. With a little bit of water at first a bit more smoke but quickly superseded by more intense dark fruits and now also orange I mean.
    • Taste
what a start! sharp! (But not the alcohol, the sharp notes remain synonymous with strong dilution, the description now refers back to my preferred dosage form as described above), salivation without end, chilli, ginger! hot! My God, what did they do? Chili peppers and sliced ginger in the barrel? Or is that the Schubeck under the Malts? "No a bissal ginger and a chilli soiz in addition, perfect!" icon_smile.gif A decent campfire smoke, coffee, dark chocolate, cherries and plums. Despite the chili and ginger force felt clearly, here everything is well balanced.

Oak notes, dark chocolate and coffee are just as well as the comforting heat sharpness long beautiful.

Since I had just written in the void, here again my Résumé for Bowmore: He is really good, only the slightly too short finish prevents the 90 points here. 89 he gets from me. In direct comparison to the Laimrig I am a little indecisive, he is a little more interesting, the Laimrig for much rounder and more mature. If I include the PLV, then the Laimrig is clearly ahead of the game.
Notes from an online chat tasting.
    • Nose
Nose: Only a little smoke, but a lot of leather, iodine, sea and yes, definitely DDR wagon! I also find some Zirus notes, in the direction of Kumquat. Very beautiful! The warmer it gets, the nicer it gets. Now I also have oranges and some old lavender.
    • Taste
Very well balanced, nice smoke, still lots of leather, salt and a dark maltiness. Yes, the alcohol also bothers me a bit.
    • Finish
In the finish, I think the unspectacular short. Pity!

    • Nose
Very slight smoky note, no peat. Leather, oak planks (just laid), sultanas. Nice "tight". After a while dried lavender from last year. The fine smoke evaporates very fast. Then the nose opens in the direction of the fruit. Not necessarily dark fruit, rather mild orange. A really great nose.
    • Taste

Honestly I can understand that people are disappointed about the high price of this NAS whisky but I am quite sure that they just rated and have not really tried. Or I do have a completely different taste as the rest. :-) It is 56.7% but you do not need any water and the dram itself is hilarious! Never had such a diabolic whisky with that nice influence of chili. 200€ is a lot of money but it is not a waste of it if you buy this bottle.

What needs to be added: If you do not like spicy food you will probably also not like this dram. If you like it you will love this dram. Sláinte!
    • Nose
Very nice color then realizing that it is colored :-D

Ok the nose is incredibly nice with almost everything that sherry is able to offer. Fruity with plums, raisins and some oranges. Some honey and brown sugar as well as dark chocolate. Only a few smoke which is unexpected due to Bowmore expectation but not missing.
    • Taste
First fruity start receiving all the fruits already realized in the nose. Then you get spicy elements like chili (maybe the alcohol but it does not seem to be the alcohol :-) )

The smoke is now more dominant but still decent. Still dark chocolate with some nuts. Very very nice!
    • Finish
Very long a bit of oak some herbs but very spicy again like if they have placed some chili peppers inside this barrel :-)

  105. JohannesB scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

A very special and truly devilishly good whisky. The enormous sharpness on the tongue, which is by no means to be confused with alcoholic sharpness, is unparalleled. Add to that wonderful sherry aromas and the typical, aromatic Bowmore smoke. For lovers of spicy food a very special recommendation, for all others but in principle also. A real experience, the price is unfortunately in my view absolutely unacceptable.
    • Nose
A bombastic start in the nose! Sweet and fruity, he plays the entire range of used Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez barrels. Roma raisins, prunes, cherry compote and barley sugar. In addition pleasantly spicy with very dark cocoa, roasted bread and walnuts. Smoke is also there, but it is so closely interwoven with the other aromas that it can hardly be separated from the overall composition. The alcohol is perfectly integrated, but gives power is not perceptible as such.
    • Taste
Breathtaking! At the beginning fruity, sweet and oily. After a few seconds, chili, cayenne and ginger take the lead. Really sharp, the tongue burns like a spicy food! This sharpness is absolutely not from the alcohol. Behind it comes again a fine sweetness and a lot of dark chocolate with nuts to the fore. The peat smoke is more noticeable in the taste.
    • Finish
Very long and creamy with dark chocolate, tart spices and still a lot of smoke. The tongue is still prickling from the sharpness. The oak wood sets a woody counterpoint.

Oh my god - I survived! This is a brutal dram. Hot, hot, hot on the

    • Nose
Bold on the nose. Lots of sherry, sweet with malted barley, prunes, and
dried figs. Herbal candy flavours emerge with rum soaked dark cherries
coated in bitter chocolate. Gentle peat and smoke, with savoury maritime
edges. Very powerful, with the alcohol being optimally integrated.
    • Taste
A herbal and slightly bitter cough syrup-like start on the palate,
immediately followed by an enormous amount of hot spices - cardamom,
cracked black pepper and red chili - which makes it difficult to
continue breathing! After this spicy shock, intense sweetness emerges
with sherry, crisp malt, ripe fruit, dark chocolate and lingering
vanilla. This is all complemented by gentle and delicate peat and smoke,
fading with tobacco leaves and subtle cloves. The tongue is still
      burning!
    • Finish
Thick and long. Crisp malt and sherry sweetness followed by sligtly
bitter herbs. Gets drier in the end with lingering walnuts and gentle
      peat smoke. Extremely mouth-coating!

      WITH WATER: There's less smoke
on the nose with increased sherry sweetness and alcohol coming through.
Water doesn't tame the hot spices on the palate, and the finish still is
      long and delicate.
