Whisky Reviews for Inchmurrin 12-year-old

[May, 2017]  I just did a private tour of Loch Lomond distillery, one of the very last sites I have not been in the stillhouse so far.  The tour was done very professionally by Ibon and clarified a lot of my questions about this fascinating distillery that produces so many different styles of whisky under one roof.  So this is a good reason to do some reviews of their current product range.

Inchmurrin is the unpeated malt whisky that is distilled in the very special Lomond style stills (they call it the Inchmurrin stills, of course) at Loch Lomond distillery.  In their necks 17 different copper plates are installed at various positions that allow different cut-off points during distillation.  For the production of this Inchmurrin malt they cut-off once at traditional 63-68% for a more fruity and oily spirit as well as at unusual 83-85% for a more grassy, peppery and floral distillate.

The nose is exactly this combination of fruity (green apples, peaches) and grassy (summer floral) aromas imbedded in a sweet and light wooden structure.  The mouthfeel is slightly peppery and a little adstringent (cold ashes, not unpleasant).  On the palate a barley sugary and fruity profile developes with some nutty and spicy notes.  The finish is of medium length, sweet and not drying at all.  An easy-to-drink dram without noticeable off-notes that (in my view) substantially improved compared with earlier releases.  Surprisingly good for such a standard edition...

  2. Marko_I did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

I like, neat, tasty, not arbitrary, with 35-40 € in the green area, good standard bottling. The new owners seem to be quite competent and make the existing material quite tasty bottlings, significant increase to earlier.
    • Nose
delicious fruity-sweet, first green apple, then canned peach, raspberry, sugary, almost candy-like (but not artificially), to a subtle aromatic hay / herbal note, really good (no vanilla-cereal-malt-boring, how to maybe would fruit)
    • Taste
sweet, milk chocolate, toffee, a spoonful of peach jam, a pinch of pepper, a drop of cough syrup / herbal liqueur ... pretty tasty, without being boring
    • Finish
medium long, sweet, slightly peppery with some burnt chocolate cake

A bit unique, but definitely worthwhile.
    • Nose
Very creamy, with layered nougat and pan-heated butter, but also immediately yeasty/fermentary, going toward cooked vegetables and cabbage. I heard this was a fruity fellow, but I don't get much fruits on the nose, apart from some soft notes of berry yoghurt. Instead it's quite musty, lactic, even a bit cheesy, with all kinds of fermented dairy: yoghurt, curd, cream cheese. It's different alright. Different but interesting.

Update: After the first sip, the fruits do come out after all, accompanied by lactic creaminess. The end result is reminiscent of black forest gateau.
    • Taste
Soft but substantial attack, gets then spicy and fruity (green grape, mirabelle). Follows up with creamy chocolate notes. Ends on new(ish) wood with some prickly, slightly sharp - but not bitter - tannins. Nowhere near as idiosyncratic as the nose, but still lively and bright.
    • Finish
New leather, prickly oak, citrus zest. Respectable, but unspectacular; good for the price point.

    Good

As luck would have it, I also obtained a more recent bottling of the Inchmurrin 12. After having tried the 2016 version, this one was released just a year later. I’m sure the batch variation will be obvious, for this is a lot darker than last year’s release.

The nose offers lots of grain and caramel, oranges and brown sugar at first. It even flirts a little with tropical notes, but does not quite reach that level of fruitiness. No big deal. While the nose is not complex, it is very good and a touch summery. Apricots and mango in the back do turn it into a small fruit bomb.

While the body is very light and lacks creaminess, the fruit does turn tropical on the palate. Mango, apricots and even some melon keep it sweet, while the oak offers a lovely spiciness. What a pleasant surprise. Yes, admittedly it does have a bit of a sharp tannin edge, but that is easily forgiven.

The finish is quite long, a bit drying, but most of all spicy warm.

This is a very nice Inchmurrin indeed! Hooray, the first Loch Lomond offering that I actually like a lot. It has absolutely nothing in coming with the previous version. Give this one a go!

A pleasant surpise from Loch Lomond distillery. It's rather complex, and combines fruitiness with a 'dirty' Springbank-like side.
    • Nose
Rather aromatic: a bit green and vegetal, chocolate, vanilla, raspberry and a fresh side with lemon and eucalyptus
      .
    • Taste
Quite grainy with puff pastry, salted peanuts, a bit of leather, mineral water, raspberries and mango
      .
    • Finish
Light smoke, a feeling of burnt wood, slightly floral and a faint fruitiness
      .

    • Nose
Dust. Orange peel. Vanilla. Dried apricots. Varnish. Artificial tropical fruit flavouring (reminds me a lot of the Tropical Punch flavoured Fanta from that used to be around when I was a kid). Guava fruit leather. Slight lactic, creamy note in the background, like English style fudge.
    • Taste
Bitter wood. Vanilla. Dried fruits. Fruit leather. Nutmeg. More tropical fruit flavouring. Very juicy limes. Pickled ginger. Pin lemonade. Sandalwood.
    • Finish
Medium-long. Sandalwood and other woody spices pick up the pace here. Limes. Fruit notes are still the main component but a bit darker, like plums and nectarines, along with some cacao.

If nothing else, give this one a few minutes after pouring it. Adding a teaspoon or a teaspoon and a half of water definitely brings out the softer, more rounded and charismatic character of this whisky. It also slows a rush of smells and flavors to a more manageable pace. It's not a whisky for everyone or all occasions, but it is undeniably characterful and pleasantly challenging.
    • Nose
neat: fresh orange peel, yeasty bread dough and spring flowers, oatmeal with tangy peach slices and unsweetened yogurt, rubber and licorice pastels, violet candy, dried tea leaves (gunpowder) and orange peel, nutmeg and allspice, buttery pastry crust, peach schnapps, dried and sugar dusted papaya and pineapple, and Lemon Head candy

w/water: Tangy peaches, fruity-floral malt with nutmeg and a touch of char, baked fuji apples and leaf litter, flaky pastry crust with brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg, maple syrup and barely ripe peaches, a hint of solvent, orange blossom water, raw brown sugar, homemade unsweetened apple cider, orange peel and vanilla, and a little pepper.
    • Taste
neat: Rich barley, dried papaya and candied ginger, a touch of cafe latte, salty licorice, mellow oak tannins

w/water: Soft malt and oak tannins with a bit of birch syrup, barley ripe bananas and tart lemon cream, mixed ripe fruits (peach, pineapple, papaya, apricot), vanilla and bitter-sweet orange
    • Finish
neat: Green bananas, barely ripe peaches and ripe cantaloupe, a faint vanilla pod, and drying bitter-sweet floral tannins.w/water: Floral honey, a touch of menthol, walnuts and a little butterscotch and smoke, candied lemon peel, bitter-sweet floral tannins, bitter chocolate, and a savory herbal fade.

    Tasted at WTF2017 - August 2017

Older Loch Lomond whisky wasn't really one of my favourites, but I heard good stories  about it lately, including the hype around the "law and order Whiskynerds bottlings" So i gave this one, together with the Inchmurrin Madeira Finish, the peated Inchmoan and the Loch Lomond Single Grain a try. I must say, am impressed, quality drams.

For this one: Really a good quality basic whisky, really impressive for a "standard 12yo" bottling. Cannot name alot of whisky where their basic bottling is of such level.

N: After the Madeira NAS WB, this is a wholly different beast and far creamier.
T: The fruity funk comes from the high copper contact, and comes with a lightness.
F: Finishes big & brash. The char brings smoke. Becomes ruddy.
    C: Really different - a ‘hybrid’ indeed.Scores a C[+]
