  1. Alex Fridays scored this whisky 77 points Expert Senior

    Colour: gold
Nose: light peated smoke, rottenness, ripe fruits, muffins.
Mouth: light peated smoke, rottenness and sweet fruits.
Finish: short, fruits, spices, fruit peel, light peated smoke.
Smoky Black is a good balanced, tasty and peaty, easy drinkable whisky.

Nice blend with a good price / performance ratio.
    • Nose
Moderate peat and smoke, grainy and sweet notes
    • Taste
The peat and smoke is more perceptible than the nose.
Next to it is sufficiently sweet and spicy.
    • Finish
Not too long, spicy, sour and dry

A very nice blend. Unusual spicy for a blend, and it's hot but still rounded. The only thing I don't like is the "orangy" artificial color.
    • Nose
Label claim it's peated, and blended with a rare Glenturet.

Don't notice too much peat, but it's quite smoky.

And they must have scimped on the Glenturet, 'coz it smells much more of grain than of malt.

But all in all a quite nice nose, and a bit "dark" for a blend.
    • Taste
The malt is more noticable in the taste. Licorice, the soft sweet kind. Spicy and powerfull for a 40%
    • Finish
Slightly bitter and a little dry. Nice and warm mouthfeel as the taste subside. Maybe a hint of highland peat as the spice fade, but it's definately not the briny Islay type.

On the bar menu as 'Famous Grouse Black Grouse', although 'Smoky Black' seems to be the correct name. Consumed Dec 2018. Aroma is oaky and muted, almost oxidised-leafy (although I've just seen this being poured from the top of a full bottle, so it can't have got too much air). Taste is spiritous vodka, thin oak and vanilla, woodchip - the backbone to this whisky seems quite immature and grain-focused - but it's fine on the whole because the peat covers up the deficiencies over time and is redeeming. 2.9/70

Dry, smokey and not exciting at all, never got in to this one

    Better than the standard Grouse
    • Nose

A light peat smoke, fruity, honey. The grain whiskey still comes through slightly.
    • Taste

The Famous Grouse is very recognizable, only smokier. Fruity, but not very spectacular. A real mixed drink.
    • Finish
      75 75
      Short spicy finish.
