can only be enjoyed in gulps of nerd droplets - everything about it burns and takes your breath away - I find it interesting that it is one of the few special whisky that gets worse with every sip - the wrong notes accumulate until it scratches a metallic bitterness and youth

Nose: Beautiful but subtle Oloroso sherry nose. Very nutty, some sour cherry and dark chocolate is also to be found. Alcohol is not felt after adequate service life. After a long time comes between the pleasant sweetness and something herbaceous-fruity or musty, which makes him in the nose schonmal very interesting and can look much older. I associate some roasted walnuts. You can tell in any case that it is a Glendronach, but unlike the 12 standard. The nose is for me before the normal 12er, I guess that the GlenDronach has not matured in a first-fill or at least not a very active barrel. But that's exactly what I find so interesting.

Taste: Soft, no alcohol to feel. Taste is also less intense than the nose. Hardly sweet, rather the full load of roasted nuts and hardly any fruit but going into the tender bitterness. What I like but: Nice spicy with hints of old sherry. No sherry bomb, very discreet ... but somehow he likes me ... could still tolerate a tick more fucking despite 48%. Still, I find him better than his ratings suggest
Conclusion: No totally complex drops and the nose is better than the taste. But what he has convinces me nonetheless.

Somehow very unsettling, like a non-refined prototype. My worst Glendronach after the Peated.
    • Nose
Plums, bitter orange, compote, typical Glendronach, typical Oloroso in young, nuts, light oak
    • Taste
Quite strong for 46%, plum, nutmeg, orange peel, nuts, slightly badly incorporated pepper & citrus
    • Finish
Short to medium long, dry Oloroso, spicy wood remains

Another Danish Glendronach release that has unofficially been dubbed 'Yoda'. Whisky tonight, we shall drink!
Let's see if this dram is as wise as the master himself. On the nose; opens up quite spicy but it hits some beautiful nutty Oloroso notes. Dried apricot, raisin, mango, orange peel, blueberry, dark chocolate, salted caramel, banana bread, honey, ginger, leather, walnut, almond, sherry vinegar and a little whiff of sulphur.
More exciting than the core range 12yo, that's for sure.
In the mouth; follows the nose but less spicy, which makes it very drinkable. Apricot, overripe banana, date, orange zest, caramel, dark chocolate, marzipan, honey, pepper, walnut, balsamic vinegar and a little salt. Again a faint note of sulphur too, which adds character and is not annoying at all. Finish is medium to long with dried fruits, cookie dough and salted caramel.

Not worth the price tag it goes for nowadays, but again much better than the core range 12yo. For me on about the same level as the 10yo Luke Skywalker, which is an unpopular opinion based on the scores. I'm glad we all have different taste buds. Oloroso Glendronach = best Glendronach!

    Based on a sample.

This 12-year-old, only stored in Oloroso sherry barrels.
In direct comparison to the "original" less cute and different, at a comparable level, definitely not better!
Certainly due to the limitation now only available at hype prices!

    [Color] amber;
    • Nose
      Nuts, raisins, dates, caramel, fine spices, coarse tobacco leaves;
    • Taste
      full of fruity nutty texture, plums, berries, nuts, sherry, spices, wood, creamy body; very harmonious;
    • Finish
      medium length, nutty creamy finish; very nutty aftertaste;

I prefer the regular 12 YO Original to this one. With the note that my bottle of 12YO is from 2013 and thus at least 16 years old.
    • Nose
      83 83
      Cherry, almond, caramel and apple.
    • Taste
      83 83
Quite nutty. Raisin and a little fresh fig. Perhaps some baked banana. Somewhat soapy.
    • Finish
      84 84
Almond, raisin, cherry, cocoa and caramel.

  10. Syleo scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

Less sweet and sherry-heavy than the regular 12er he seems to me in any case, instead more prominent but also slightly oily and sticky finish. Since the beginning of the tasting, I can not shake the impression that reminds me of the "Yoda" with its cedar and rather edgy character somehow more to a Glenfarclas than to a Glendronach. Surprising but not bad!
    • Nose
      85 85
On the top of the caramel-colored 12-year-old, there is an intense sweetness of vanilla and toffee, including ripe fruit, especially pears, damp grass, some cedar wood and a slight reminder of a good rum pot as well as a dry red wine - as always possible is. In addition, but also a few dried rose petals, thyme and drought, all very slightly sulfurized.
    • Taste
      82 82
The taste is the red wine-like dryness at the top, the alcohol rises above the palate in the nose, before then here again the fruit makes its way, pears and apple peel and again the herbs and dried fruit to a slight bitterness ...
    • Finish
      80 80
... which runs out of a beautiful, almost oily-round finish.

    Nose:
Sweet and a little hidden sherry notes. This is not a sherry bomb on the nose. But there is clearly a hint of raisins and chocolate underneath this delicacy.

    Taste:
Sweet, chocolate, mars candy bar, then there is red fruit, even grape. After that it turns a bit sour-dry.

    Body:
    Medium, a little oily.

    Finish:
Medium length. Quite tannic en woody. A bit sour and ry. Clearly sherry influenced, but a bit off.

    Wonderful dram!
    • Nose
Nice full spicy nose, some citrus / orange, honey sweet, little chocolate in the background.
    • Taste
Wow, nice ripe taste! Creamy milk chocolate, little nutty, marmalade.
    • Finish
Nice long finish, taste stays delicious.

  17. markjedi1 scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

I do not like to admit it, but I prefer the (much cheaper) GlenDronach 12 Original. Thanks, Sven!
    • Nose
Very juicy, sweet sherried nose full of dades and raisins, a hint of overripe cherries and orange marmalade. Very waxy too. It has a hint of varnish. Tobacco leaves. Quite alright! If you leave it to breath for long it also gets a green edge as if from squashed ferns. No joke.
    • Taste
It is honeysweet and very spicy on the palate, but unfortunately the body is somewhat light. Especially if you put it right behind the Darth Vader or Luke Skywalker. Next to the dades and raisins I now also get some blueberries and a hint of bitter oranges. Becomes more spicy with the second sip. The third… well now, let’s just say that it flirts a little with sulphur. Luckily within the acceptable.
    • Finish
On the medium long finish, it is all about the oak. It suppresses the fruit somewhat and gives the floor to the spices. It leaves your mouth dry.

Slightly better than 12 yo Original.
    • Nose
Full-blown Glendronach stewed fruits with plums, cherries and dates dominating. Underneath there is a faint whiff of bourbony varnish and a slight earthiness.
    • Taste
Very sweet, nicely rounded, although quite flat. Fruits - plums, figs, perhaps some berries and a hint of tobacco.
    • Finish
Medium long with a fruity side and a handfull of spices.

Well, there is an interesting Oloroso way you would expect to end somehow spectacular. But the oak is dominant in the finish and leaves you alone waiting for some extra benefit for your money. Quite a disappointing finish. I would rather prefer the 12 year old Original.

    Concerning price/performance ratio: 6/10 (2015)
    • Nose
Sherry (sure Oloroso, but something like PX is also in the background), sweet, fruits, plums (underripe), some nuts.
    • Taste
Sherry, plums, citrus fruits, some nuts.
    • Finish
      Medium. Oak and some spices.

Compared to the standard 12: better. The quality of the content seems better, but it will also be helped by the slightly higher ABV. Price: limited so understandably higher, but for the same money I could get the 18 Allardice.

This is a well-crafted whisky, no doubt. The fruitiness and especially
this delicate mix of winterly spices play a dominant role here while the
sherry influence is noticeable but significantly reserved. A polarising
dram I think. The sherry aficionados will miss the heavy sherry load
being characteristic for most of the GD bottlings. So do I. On the other
hand, however, this dram is a pleasant example for a lighter and more
fruity style of GlenDronach with significantly less sherry influence
    showing more distillery character.

I thank Marko Kiele for sharing a sample with me!

    • Nose
First there is gentle sherry on the nose with a heavy and complex fruity
note. Lingering vanilla emerges, complemented by a touch of citrus
notes. Yellow ripe fruit arrives with time, banana and yellow plums,
along with creamy vanilla. Becomes fresher and more fruity on the nose
with subtle milk chocolate in the back.
    • Taste
Deliciously sweet on the palate with vanilla and lots of delicate yellow
fruit, plums and banana in particular, followed by a pleasant load of
warming spice - cinnamon, nutmeg, gentle oak and a hint of pepper. A
touch of barley with lingering citrus notes in the back.
    • Finish
The finish shows good length with warming spice, a touch of nuttiness and lingering milk chocolate on the tail.WITH WATER: Now there is more sherry flavour coming through but also an
increased spiciness on the nose, while the palate still shows a good
balance of fruit and this delicate mix of pleasant spices with marzipan
in particular. The finish is medium-long with prickling and warming
      spice.
