This dram also made me rethink whether I really wanted a heavily peated Arran. This Machrie Moor edition clocked in at 20 PPM (phenol parts per million), which, while not heavily peated, is still significantly peated. The mild and fruity Arran malt is completely lost and overwhelmed by the peat influence. Arran definitely can do peat well; the Smuggler Series featured two blends featuring peat and they were great, but this was not good at all. It was simple and one note and Arran does not play the smoke note very well.
    • Nose
A meadow on fire: ash, smoke, lilies, lilacs, and wildflowers all mingle together. There is faint antiseptic iodine and a sweet coating of gingerbread frosting.
    • Taste
Very light body and not very complex palate. Dominated by syrupy liquid smoke from a grassfire or burning coconut husks with a slightly metallic-battery twang. Fleeting floral and sausage notes.
    • Finish
Medium to short caramel and coriander.

A very rewarding cask strength Arran! At first I wasn’t very convinced but this one grows on me by the minute! What a delight this is.
    • Nose
Good nose! Full of flavors. Lots of wood influences of old quality bourbon casks. It offers quite some mild spices like in vanilla curd cheese and licorice candy. The whole is packed in a rather strong package. The high ABV definitely contributes to that. Although it’s a NAS, my gut feeling tells me quite some older, mature casks are being used here. Ripe tropical fruits and a rather intense spiced layer normally seen on older bourbon maturations are clearly present here. A little later more ‘dirty’, earthy and some smokey flavors reveal. Smoked vanilla and charcoal. Nice and multi layered!
    • Taste
The palate is soft and gentle upon arrival. The alcohol integrated very well. It offers everything one could expect of a bourbonized CS whisky. It doesn’t do anything wrong, neither there are special things to detect. It’s just very good in what it offers! Thick, creamy body. Thick on vanilla, honey, sugared apples, some pear and a whiff of smoke.
    • Finish
Long, soft and full flavored. There it is, the peat! Smoked fruits like in apples, zesty pear and nectarine. Again more of the above stated spices.

It’s a very, very fit whisky to start and learn to drink cask strength whiskies. But it is a delight for more experienced enthousiast in my opinion! I would be happy to empty a bottle when given a bottle by surprise. But it’s definitely something I could buy it myself.

At first he showed promise, but at some point it became clear that no development was foreseen; in the end, I was pleased only by an interesting, sweetish, but very little smoky taste. With water, the structure collapses. Smoke, unexpectedly, rather weak.

    • Taste
Super sweet (sweetness 9 out of 10), rich, stringy and oily, fruit, refined sugar, burnt sugar, homemade lollipops, lemon pie, citrus fruits, vanilla.

A nice suprise to me, I enjoyed it's refined mild and somewhat flowery peat.
    • Nose
      87 87
Mild and flowery peat. Subtle fruits (pear) and vanilla. A unique soft peaty profile I never encountered before!
    • Taste
      86 86
Slightly more peat with a creamy mouth feel. Citrus fruits vanilla, espresso, sweet flowers and a mineral/briny edge.
    • Finish
      84 84
Mild peat, with citrus fruits, vanilla and green olives. Just that, nice but no further development.

Arran Machrie Moor peated cask strength second edition 58.2%. Very pale. Aroma is spiritous and muted, slight dried banana chips and seared apple. A bit like some home-oaked spirits I've nosed. Taste is assertive, boozy, spiritous, the flavours are a bit too concentrated and it's coming across a bit hot and dense I'd say. Floral linger. Lacking complexity as a result of the strength but perfectly nice. (Score: 75) With water there's a plasticky note in aroma and taste becomes a little more biscuity. Opens up a lot more complexity. The peat is soft and lingering. The middle is juicy with faint tropical fruits. This one really took water well. (Score: 82)

Despite some severity, I liked whisky.
    • Nose
      86 86
Salty, rye bread, malt and peat in smoked cut, slaked lime, waxed smoked wood, cold brazier meat (smoked duck meat, fish), sour berry sweetness, cherries, candied marmalade and candied fruits, vigilant minerality, sea with seaweed, bread crumbs, creamy toffee. Strict aroma.
    • Taste
      87 87
Oily, strong, pepper, noticeably smoked, smoky, mineral, with marmalade.
    • Finish
      87 87
Warms, knits, oak, rolls in waves, long, smoked, malt, as if after fish or lard, a feeling in the mouth, raisins, melon, pinches.

    • Nose
Perfumery and floral, with plant (needles, foliage) and sea (iodine, salt, algae) notes, with a small content of coal and pepper.
    • Taste
Slightly harsh, sweet-smoked, in addition slightly salty, peppery and oaky.
    • Finish
Medium duration, buttery, with hints of salt, pepper, iodine and smoked fish.

Not typical peat whisky, not like Ailovsky profile, absolutely not an amateur.
    • Nose
Some kind of oil, dry, not powerful, earthy, soot, soot, very mineral, there is no sensation of smoke like from a fire, maybe coals, there is fruit sweetness, iodine.
    • Taste
Smoky, burning, sweet, a little sea, iodine, there is the influence of a barrel, some kind of ointment finol,
    • Finish
      Simple sweetish but long lasting.

N- Walnut oil, oyster, toffee and honeycomb cake breeze thru. Fresh cut grass, earthy peat with sweet pandan crème brûlée and berries. Surprisingly light on nose despite the hefty strength. Get even coast-ier, seaweed, salted herbs, shellfish and clove-y. (88/22)

P- Sweet on tip, plenty of smokes rises from the back. Vanilla biscuit, cedar cigar box, sooty, grassy and liquorice with brunt salt. Hint of caol ila. (87/21)

F- Medium-long, smooth, clean and dry with liquorice. Not pushing the boundary hard enough. (86/20)

B/B- 87/21. Feel rounder than First Edition, which lost a bit of fun and appeared 'generic'.

I decent peated whisky, although it does miss some distinct character to make it stand apart from let’s say, lightly peated whisky from Islay. The Arran character is there, but it is almost pushed away by the bourbon cask influence. What’s left is good, but not great (yet). Remains interesting, though.
    • Nose
      85 85
Initially, soft peat come forward that is backed up by Arran’s usual fruitiness with fresh apples and pears. A few drops of citrus fruits, and a light coastal influence with some sea spray and wet moss, are also there. All very well balanced and very friendly. Raspberry sweets, no make that strawberry, lemon skin, and a few drops of orange juice. A drop of water brings out more barley sugar, ripe apples, a few raisins, cinnamon, and a more mineral side. The citrus fruits remind me somewhat of Caol Ila, which is surely not a bad thing I would say.
    • Taste
      86 86
The palate is less fruity at first and contain more peat, moss, leaves, and stables (no idea how you could taste that, though). Almost a lighter and younger apprentice of Lagavulin. Almost instantly, the bourbon cask influence comes forward. Oranges, lemons, lime, and vanilla, with fresh apple compote, the latter a touch of Arran. Water subdues the peat and brings out more sweetness. Also there are some vanilla sugar, baker’s cream, and salty crisps. It is quite fresh.
    • Finish
      85 85
The finish is fairly long with more vegetal peat, salt and lemons. I would say this is quite good.

  21. Calmar scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Quite like a peaty mole, dense, saturated, plastic notes a little spoil the picture, and in general I do not understand the peat Arran, an absolutely artificial and senseless whisky.
    • Nose
Restrained, dry, the first nose - prela folia, peat; smoke, burnt boards, smoked products, carpentry shop, thinner, leather goods, weak flower-fruit notes.
    • Taste
Powerful, rich, peat, ash, mineral-metallic notes, grain, lemon peel, plastic, rubber, ginger, sweet confectionery shades.
    • Finish
Spicy, warming, peat, coal, ginger, oak, light herbal notes, tablet bitterness.

  22. larswehmeier scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
A clear plume of smoke hangs over the dram. Behind it shows a clear sugary sweetness. It tingles in the nose due to the higher alcohol content. The dram gets fresher and floral over time.
    • Taste
Strong start. Pleasant smoke. Light fruitiness. Citrus freshness.
    • Finish
Medium long and warming with some oak.

    • Nose

    • Taste
Stinging, peppery. Licorice. Full, some peat, smoke. Honey too.
    • Finish
Pepper, licorice, peat, smoke, sweet. Sturdy. Reasonably long

I enjoyed this neat for nearly most of the bottle. If you want a good solid straight down the line smoky whisky that hits the spot , I would recommend this one.
    • Nose
Neat , this is quite earthy, add a little , and I mean a little bit of water and you get fresh toasted crumpets with loads of butter, some pear and for some reason talcum powder. For a cask strength whisky , the peat and smoke isn't that strong.
    • Taste
Full bodied, the peat and smoke is very well balanced and dominate the taste buds leaving a thick coating, the high strength certainly brings it home, I tried it with a little water and it loses it's punch. There is some lemon zest in there but very little. This isn't a complex whisky but that is fine.
    • Finish
The finish is nice and long with a tinge of orange. Hours after it still lingers on the taste buds.

Hm. Not bad, but somehow I'm disappointed too. The "outside hui" made me expect more. Or something else, more concrete, somehow seems "confused". With an Ileach CS or Classic of Islay I would probably be happier for less money. (But nice on the shelf isser.)
    • Nose
dry, dusty, old, has something of old upholstery, Uromas kitchen cabinets, soil ... in between, but also young, fruity "splashes", lemon, pineapple, freshly cut grass
    • Taste
surprisingly sweet (compared to the smell), malt, butter biscuits ... even a little bit of pumpernickel ... plus some lime bitterness, salt, hay, quite wild the whole thing
    • Finish
      medium, smoke, salt, liquorice

  37. KayMeertens scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

Much sweeter than the first cask strength batch, less natural. This is more like the general Machrie Moors but then on higher strength.
    • Nose
Fig, apple, peach and peat. Later toffee and banana.
    • Taste
Toffee, fig, apple, peat, malt and banana. Addition of water makes this profile less pleasant, it really needs the punch.
