Quite a monolithic beast. When first opened, I was pretty sure this was just another solid but more or less average young heavy peater, elevated by it's natural presentation. And yes, It's simple, it didn't surprise me, but it doesn't get boring as well, and it also doesn't have any flaws worthy of mention, and man, if you add quite some water, and have some patience with your dram, this really delivers!
If this were older and had some clever wood treatment edge to it, this is 90 points territory no doubt.
    • Nose
earthy peatsmoke, creamy lemon, hay, vanilla ice cream with lemon zests, barley sugar, a faint stale wood note, some licorice, after a moment something like grilled corn with mashed potatoes, later a little celery and paprika.

with the addition of 3 tbs of water (4cl) and ~15 min:
turns pretty cloudy, sweetened lemon juice, tar, diesel exhaust fumes and carbolic soap galore.
    • Taste
peated barley sugar arrival, turns immediately zesty and sweet, lemony, salty, mineral, hugely carbolic, licorice, tar, fumes, lemon icing sugar, '90s lemon Gatorade, some ginger, big and buff body with a good balance, especially considering it's (presumable) age.
    • Finish
earthy peatsmoke, tar, lemon juice, some licorice, some hay, some barley sugar, medium to long.

Flavor has notes of fruits, flowers, peat and little smoke. Taste has elements of spices and peat. Finish is peaty with spices (pepper?) and a little bit sharp at the end.

IMHO the drink is much better then 8 y.o. "Port Askaig".

Good basic cask strength smoker from Islay
    • Nose
Sweet peat, lemon, strong alcoholic note, brackish water, earthy, fresh mint, malt sugar
    • Taste
Oily, a lot of lemon, firy, ginger, pepper
    • Finish
Smoky, black tea, sweeter, then bitter peat, bitter wood

An Islay power house, on ABV as well as taste.
    Loved this sample from karloff.

      Ah, heavily peated Caol Ila.
      Intense maritime Islay peat.
      Mineral and lightly citric.
    • Taste
      93 93
First (large) sip is a breathtaking attack on the senses.
A mouthfull of smouldering embers and hot ashes.
Then someone tries to put it out with a bucket of seawater, it's not working, so your mouth is stuffed with kelp.
Salty licorice, engine oil and rubber.
      However strange it sounds; lovely!
    • Finish
      90 90
It's long. Some fruity notes dance on the tounge while the spicy fire keeps burning at the back of the throat.

I took a chance on this and I am glad I did because I loved it and so will any peathead .

If you could smell underwater, this is what the coast of Islay would smell like, lots of sea delights. It's very earthy but earth after a storm. Just a slightly soiled horses stable this time with warm old engine oil. There are also some light fruit notes. The nose itself is quite tame compared to the taste.
    • Taste
      91 91
For such a high strength, this is right on the money and no water necessary. Again it's very earthy and thick with no dryness at all considering it's like a bonfire in the mouth and it's crackling away nicely. Lots of brine that mix with the barley and fruit notes. I gave the daughter a taste and she said it tastes like TCP. It doesn't because if it did I wouldn't be drinking it. But I know what she means.
    • Finish
      88 88
The finish is medium to long with a swirling of fruit notes and liquorice. Just a wee metallic note on the death.

Honest, straightforward Islay punch. Nice balanced. Sweetness and smoke.
    • Nose
      83 83
Intense, ham, smoke, leather, sweetness. Long-lasting.
    • Taste
      81 81
Despite the high alcohol content drinkable without water. Of course better if he stands for something. Strong start. Immediately ham and smoke, right after sweetie. He keeps what the nose promises.
    • Finish
      82 82
Medium long, dry, fruit flavors, smoke always in the background.

Must first breathe for about 15 minutes, until its aroma has fully unfolded.

    Nose: pistachios - chocolates

    Taste: dark chocolate

Finish: very long, over 20 minutes. Slightly leathery, then slowly rising, strong smoke and peat.

Class single malt, with a price that is traded well below its value.

Maybe batch variation is to blame here, but my sample was wayyy too young, with no discernible cask influence whatsoever, practically newmake with a dominant, unpleasant top note of burnt plastic.
