A great bottling of a sadly lost bottling. I wrote my notes when I finally emptied the bottle, ie the whisky had to breathe and mature in the open bottle for a long time.

  7. Thermidor scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Seems very cask-driven but it was obviously a good cask. The fact it's 43 % doesn't bother me at all.
    • Nose
Starts with some sulphur and faint farmy notes with a side of fertilizer. It changes pretty quickly though, with the distillate pushing out some light honey melon and wildflower notes. After being in the glass a while it becomes more and more recognizably a Spey whisky, with hefty butteriness and some of that grassiness I'd expect from Imperial. The strongest notes come from the cask, with varnish, very liberally sugared coffee, rosé wine, and a bit of sulphur again.
    • Taste
Medium, solid body. Raisins, spices, cocoa powder, faint peatiness, and lots of brown sugar. No noticeable old oak notes, but the distillate's obviously passed its wild teenage years because there's no sharpness or shallowness to it. Strongly sugared milk chocolate. I really can't escape these sugary notes. It's not cloying, but it certainly is sweet.
    • Finish
First it's all on the sherry, but receeds into this coppery tang. After a while in the glass the finish becomes sweeter and less metallic, but it's never particularly strong.

    • Nose
Beeswax, apricot, furniture polish, vanilla, caramel, hazelnut and tangerine. Great nose.
    • Taste
Waxy, but unfortunately a bit one-dimensional after that promising nose. A bit of almond and vanilla. It lacks fruitiness in the taste. But maybe I'm putting the bar a bit too high if it concerns Imperial, because this is definitely very good nevertheless.
    • Finish
Vanilla pudding, beeswax, caramel and apple. A limestone dryness.

    Tasting Notes by vanZuylen:
    Color: dark gold.
Nose: delicate sherry influences with flavors of roasted malt, vanilla, brown sugar, cloves and rich fruitiness of mango, pineapple, passion fruit, apricot, orange zest and lively citrus fruit.
Taste: First spiciness of ground black pepper, cloves and cinnamon, followed by notes of tropical fruit, orange, toasted oak and licorice.
Finish: show a great balance between fruity and spicy.
