Whisky Reviews for Laphroaig 1998 SV
2 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 89.00 points
- Not as obviously sherried as some of its sister casks distilled on 22 Sept, 1998, and probably not as excellent, but this is still plenty good. Typical Laphroaig smoke, phenolic peat, with some light touches of stone fruits like peaches and nectarines... a totally modern laphroaig. It suffers a bit in the finish, which is a bit abrupt in my opinion. I tried this side by side with the Laphroaig Cairdeas 200th anniversary (the green one), which I've always thought was pretty good and one of my favorite Cairdeas, and this 1998 refilled sherried easily beats it (fresher, more fruity, and more balanced). I should have bought a couple bottles when it was available. This review is from a sample.
- Quite a fantastic symphony of Islay notes and subtle sherry. A fantastic rainy day dram.
Campfire. Sea spray. Smoked Salmon. Seafood. Fennel. White pepper. Salty wood (rotting boat on the beach). Wine tannins. Beef stock cubes. Marmite. Light fruity note, sultanas, grapes, etc.
Very spicy. Lots of pepper, paprika and cinnamon. A great big helping of sea salt. Fruity sherry influence is more prominent here, with a distinct figgy note, also a bit of a jammy note develops with some time. Unsweetened rooibos tea. Honey. Charred wood.
Long. Ashy, spicy. Salt.Bitter sherry wood. Bit of a medicinal undertone.
