Whisky Reviews for Ardbeg Supernova

56 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 89.30 points

  1. ARDBERG scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

Scores of head to head tasting of
    SN 2015 (90)
    SN 2014 (88)
    SN 2010 (88)
    SN 2009 (88)
Vatting of all 4 SNs above (90)

2015 came out on top without doubt. Whereas the SN 2009 had an
advantage over 2010 and 2014 when undiluted, a few drops of water
reversed the situation with 2010 and 2014 becoming much better and 2009
quite mean. Hence the decision to score them at 88 and rate the SN 2015
at 90 (almost with a tendency to 91). Bottom line - give them time and
lots of air. A half empty bottle sitting around for months might
surprise you, when going back to it.
A vatting of all 4 SNs brought out the best of the older one, but didn't top the SN 2015.

More ashes than the previous version of 2014. Quite good stuff, reminds me about some Octomores. It is more concise than the 2014 version.

    Concerning price/performance ratio: 7/10

I can understand why many people like it.
It's different. Much more power than a regular Ardbeg 10 and if you're into peat this one is definitely worth trying.
But somehow I can't overcome the feeling I'm drinking from an ashtray. It's just not for me.
If it wasn't for the intens peat I would probably love it.
In the finish it reveals some nice flavors. Salt, sweet vanilla, fruit, wood.

Update: I must admit that, now that the bottle has been opened for a few months, the peat remains but the ahs flavor is as good as gone. Much, much better!
It brings my original rating (81 points) up to 86 points.

  7. Dre73 scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

Very full and intense whisky, with a nice combination of peat smoke and sweet elements. Very attractive one.

Peat, but immediately some fruitiness as well. Sweet smoke, some fake leather, vanilla, cake, bonfire smoke as well, ash.
    • Taste
      89 89
Strong, a lot of pepper, intense. Sal ammoniac and licorice, peat, sweet smoke. Some caramel and milkchocolate.
    • Finish
      89 89
Still very strong, pretty some pepper, sweet smoke, peat, later on it gets even stronger and more intense. Pretty long finish.
