Whisky Reviews for Glenlivet 18-year-old

12 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 83.17 points

  1. tangtang scored this whisky 80 points Expert Senior

this malt is not so convincing. There are far better ones in this age group. Even the 15er is more complex, rounder and fuller than this.
    • Nose
      80 80
Sherry, sweet and nutty with citrus fruits
    • Taste
      80 80
      Citrus, sherry, spicy sweet
    • Finish
      79 79
      Sherry, wuerzig suess

A decent whisky especially if you are not a regular drinker, but want something exclusive.
Should have been bottled at 46%ABV and NCF.
    • Nose
      83 83
Subtle hint of sherry matured whisky. So dried red fruits and a little hint of wood polish. There is creamy caramel in the background. It is not very outspoken on the nose, but it is decent.
    • Taste
      85 85
Sweet and smooth arrival. There is sherry influence but also bourbon. It feels a little thin though. A little extra strength and NCF would have done a lot I suppose.
    • Finish
      83 83
Medium length. More bourbon cask influences here. Fades away a little bitter-sweet.

Glenlivet 18 is one of those whiskies that is often not given its due credit because its quality is in its subtlety. Immediately on the nose it is clear that this is a blend of both bourbon and sherry maturation, however there are no overbearing vanilla or sultana notes, rather the qualities of both these cask types work in harmony with one another. True to its Speyside roots the nose is dominated by aromas of crisp apple, gentle honey, nutmeg, perhaps even some nuts. The palate is likewise balanced: more apples, honey, gentle spices. In the background are faint hints of Oloroso creaminess from the sherry and citrus from the bourbon. The finish isn't overly long for an 18yo whisky but there is not a single unpleasant note in sight. Those who are chasing a "punch in the face" whisky experience will find this Glenlivet boring, however in my mind it is a great example of a "quiet achiever."

A great, soft, mild, old, mature and very good Speyside Malt at a great price!
    • Nose
      beautiful complex aroma: oak, sherry, sweetness and fruit (plums, berries, oranges);
    • Taste
      sweet, aromatic on, then sherry, toffee, fruits, nuts; oily, complex;
    • Finish
      long, sweet finish, malty, slight bitterness;

  5. Kaleva scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

Very good and pleasant whisky, quite complex on the nose. Typical "summer" malt with lot of ripe fruits and linden notes. The palate however isn't as reach as the nose, also the finish is quite short. But this whisky leaves very good overall impression, also the price is very reasonable.
    • Nose
Floral (roses, linden blossom), fruity (yellow ripe apples, oranges, hint of melons), linden honey, sherry influence, getting grassy with water
    • Taste
Medium-sweet, nutty, fudge, oranges, malty notes
    • Finish
      Short, getting dry, slightly spicy

So there's nothing to talk about here. This bottle is one of the absolute PLV frontrunners. The whisky is for the most called prices an absolute buy recommendation.
    END of the announcement!
    • Nose
      87 87
Very aromatic. With fine spices and woody notes. Immediately caramel is there and in the background the fruitiness and freshness that Glenlivet also knows. Now sweet vanilla with light apple Helene. Fine!
    • Taste
      86 86
Now stronger aromas of caramel and vanilla and everything combined with wood and herbs. The apple Helene answers again and a hint of cider. Very round and creamy. Then slightly sparkling reinforced by a little pepper. The mouth sounds like orange peel, (not bitter) some oak and a hint of salt and honey. Well done.
    • Finish
      85 85
Unfortunately, only medium to short but with a minty freshness. Few notes of mirabelle plums. Dry, it reminds you of a warm wood. A hint of sweet nuttiness lingers a bit longer.
From now on it is always on the shelf.

Not too complex, but tasty whisky. Fruity and also spicy.
    • Nose
Fruity, tropical fruit especially, pineapple. Apple. Spicy, hint of rubber, also a hint of coconut. Raisins.
    • Taste
Sweet, honey. Fruit again, tropical fruit. Spicy, liquorice, salmiak.
    • Finish
Light pepper now, sweet, honey. Mid-length. Wood tones, liquorice.

  9. Jeig scored this whisky 86 points Expert Junior

Easy to drink, surprisingly not so much oak influenced given 18 yrs age.
    • Nose
      Suble tropical fruits, pineapple.
    • Taste
Subtle, velvety, well balance, little ginger in development
    • Finish
      Medium-long, vanilla, rounded finish.
