Whisky Reviews for Hibiki 21-year-old

In Kyoto, you can buy the most exquisite green tea cookies on this planet: quality ingredients, perfectly composed, but utterly expensive. The same applies to Hibiki 21. On the nose, papaya, kiwi and subtle hints of soot mix with sandalwood, dried herbs and incense. Like a roller coaster, the taste catapults you through the flavor wheel: juicy, fruity, spicy and floral, intense and rounded, this blend sparkles like a diamond. Mizunara, icing sugar, and, I kid you not, green tea cookies with white chocolate crown the slowly fading finish. A world-class whisky!

    Apple juice. Thick quick legs.
Nice burst of fresh fruits and earthiness. Fresh baked sweet pastries. Cooked apples. Salted caramel. Old spicy wood. Distinct hibiki smell. Dry fruity tobacco.
Solid mouthfeel. Same fruity palate. Apples.
Some sour notes. Quite herbal. Herbal gensing. Getting sour. some lemon or cider perhaps. And a lot of toffee apple. Can taste the grain. Tastes like quite a bit of maize.
Lingering aftertaste. Quite dry. Still get the herbal liquor hit. Very herbal all the way.
    Solid dram.

it's perfectly alright. Very balanced nose, quite cautious unless you wet the inner wall of the glass. Very complex, taste and finish are ok, but not particularly outstanding. Samples ok but the announced price of a large bottle seems too high for what is on offer.

Sherry rises in the nose, slightly fruity sweet, citrus fruits, light caramel, spicy oak which but quickly evaporates, vanilla. The sweetness comes out very soft, the spice and citrus only come when the inner wall of the glass is wet

Sherry, spicy oak notes, fruity, very slightly sweet and slightly hot, citrus fruits are easy to hear, slightly caramel

soft, slightly sweet, spicy oak, fruity, medium to long. Fruity notes stay in the mouth for a long time. Sherry is also present.

richer, bolder, darker compared to the 17, lots of dark wood tones, but still gentle, floral and fruity

Eye: Noticeably darker that the 17yr old.

Nose: Cherries with a bouquet of flowers and deep hints of vanilla. Stunning.

Palate: Perfect harmony of sweetness and floral elements, it's like the 17yr old but kicked up a few notches. Cherry sweetness is just divine.

Finish: Incredibly long with great drying oak influence. The oak isn't at all overpowering but it is present and takes command to round the overall profile out. Finishes with gorgeous fruits and flowers.

A great whisky indeed - it's just a bit too sweet and smooth for my taste - thus is probably not my favorite but still great

Sweet oak and vanilla, rich, intensive, also fruity like citrus fruits, tropical fruits, passion fruits, ripe bananas, pineapples - excellent!
    • Taste

Very oily, liquorice, mellow and thick, nice fruity notes with rich vanilla and oak aromas, nice sweetness, after a while also some nutty and cinnamon notes come up - very good!

Long and smooth, still having some citrusy and vanilla

Tasted right after the 17 year old. In comparison, this one looks much more mature and harmonious.

Rotten old wood, tea, vanillin (thanks Jonas!) And subtle sweetness of candy in the background
    • Taste
      88 88
Old wood again, additional honey and some glue
a little sour on the second sip
    • Finish
      86 86
relatively short, even if an impression of the whiskey remains, with vanillin, wood and the glue again

A very smooth, balanced blend. Typical Japanese, with a wide facet. Not for people who like spicy whiskeys. It's great with women!
