Big and bold and a real treat for anyone even slightly fond of peated whiskies and Port Charlotte in particular.
    • Nose
Briny with sweet peat, followed by candied lemon, lime rasp and bitter oranges. Ripe banana, and a big hit of straw as well. There's a touch of glue somewhere too, and ozone.
    • Taste
Surprisingly dry, and earthy as well. The peat is a bit more pronounced here, slightly rubber-y, yet still has a sweet edge to it. A big hit of vanilla and spiciness (cloves, nutmeg). Somewhat ashy.
    • Finish
Ashy, smoke and slightly salty. Long.

This was a really lovely one. Really great independent bottling showcasing a really well made spirit.Reviewed in my blog:https://iwriteaboutstuffilike.com/2017/06/06/port-charlotte-2003-whisky-broker/
    • Nose
Sweet, farmy peat. Lactic caramel. Ash. Brine. Teriyaki sauce. Charred lemons. Milk chocolate. Wintergreen. Peppermint. Celery salt.
    • Taste
Farmy peat. Lots of ash and brine, like a seaside bonfire. Toffee. Citric acid. Creme brulee. Pepper. Cloves. Menthol. Bitter green herbs.
    • Finish
Long. Ashy peat. Coal dust. Salt, lots of salt. Citrus zest. Menthol. Cough syrup.

A very good Port Charlotte, actually better than the official PC range. 87/88.

Compared it to a sample of the 2002 WhB cask 1164. This one is clearly rawer and farmier, with a better body and finish. Even though that one gets really high scores, I like this one much better.
    • Nose
A lot of sweet lime upfront, plus a tad of orange. The peat is not very dominant initially and identifies itself as subtle chocolate and gingerbread. It then becomes stronger and takes a more farmy / vegetal shape. Still not too heavy though, more like warm hay on a summer day in the countryside. With water more orange and some peach.
    • Taste
Peat: initially earthy, then briny. Orange, citrus, dark chocolate, gingerbread, caramel and a spiciness like clove. With water some vanilla.
    • Finish
Peat, 'Printen' covered in dark chocolate, orange and ketjap (soy sauce). Eventually well-done barbecued spare ribs. Or perhaps I mean slightly burnt, but I guess that I'm not the only man for whom that comes down to the same thing. A very rewarding finish.
