Defends his status over and over again. Although you have to put the current hype about the old bottles into perspective. What made it special back then, among other things, were the older barrels that were allowed in the bottles at an incredibly low price. It's no longer available today, on the contrary, the prices are slowly becoming extravagant. Without a doubt great stuff, timeless, irreplaceable. Anyone who bought it cheaply back then can be happy. Everyone else would have to pay more today than it's worth. It pays to stay on the ball and track down the undervalued underdogs before the attention leads to the inevitable takeover by gentlemen in suits and the end of the Golden Age. ;)
    • Nose
Like a drug. There is sweetness, a certain tartness and aromatic spiciness. Ripe banana, truckload of tart-sweet sherry, dates, vanilla, chocolate, cinnamon, toffee, dried fruit. povidl. Orange marmalade with rind. I also find the odd leathery note that points to the older casks.
    • Taste
sour, then sweet Arrival. Spreads out warm and becoming sweeter, especially with a tasteful, tart sherry note. Just awesome. Marzipan, sugared almonds. Juicy orange. Tea.
    • Finish
sweet, liquorice, nutty, sherry spreads from the palate all over the mouth. Black tea, chai tea. You can chew on the exit. Delicious.

The smell is convincing, it is complex, intense and exciting. He invites you to take a look at the whisky.
In the mouth, the impression continues, but the whisky gets tart. The typical Glendronach sourness is missing. He is very barrel-heavy. I miss a little sweetness as a counterpoint to the spicy bitterness. The shows only in the second sip.
The finish shows a little of this sweetness, but is somewhat one-sided compared to the nose and mouth.
A very nice whisky, but the interim fuss that was made about him, he is not quite fair. At that time, however, a top whisky.
I imagine that one realizes that this whisky is actually more than 15 years old.
    • Nose
Orange, some cherry, behind it a grassy, herbal note, spicy, nutmeg, oregano, some cassis, wet wood, a little leather
    • Taste
Nutty on the nose, oily body, delicate astringent, dried fruit, apricot, raisin, espresso, dark chocolate, brand beans, bread crust, some malt, in the background a delicate bitterness, sweetness only shows in the second sip
    • Finish
Dark chocolate, espresso, spicy oak, some malt, a hint of sweetness of brown sugar

N: Such a marked contrast to the modern Macallan 12 [2016] WB. Not only in the arbitrary extra three years+ but mainly in the calibre of the casks that give a far richer depth. Added to that are the hints of mineral peat tones in the mix that indicate this is a winner from the off.
T: Rich, fruity oily, salivating mouthfeel and some candle wax. Again, compared to the Mac 12, it's richer, fruitier, deeper and oh so vibrant but without that crazy 'zing' that is akin to the modern styled/engineered, first fill NAS & young whiskies of today.
F:  I'm digging those moorish sugars coming from the sherry with that mineral peat detected on the nose - oh and those vegetal notes and chocolate getting involved at the death. The wood is more than equal to the spirit and vice versa - or more succinctly, equally matched. The sherry is never obtrusive.
C: Dave broom says that the quality of casks at Macallan is reported to be low. It's fair to say that the cask quality at Glendronach have been rather high for some years now. This bottle is a later [2015] version WB bottled just before the Revival was phased out. I think Glendronach gave their followers a good send-out batch. Looking forward to the revival's revival.
