See? You *can* actually find "real" Bowmore in the core range – or you could, at least (until they discontinued this series, that is).
Doesn't need any water, but water also doesn't hurt it in the slightest.
    • Nose
      87 87
Rich and dense first-fill vanillin, fusty florals (a whiff of violet), lovely warm wood tones and sweet, juicy fruits: tangerines, melons, grapes, pineapples and pears...
    • Taste
      89 89
Sweet and ashy, with a thick fruitiness (on the palate, it's mainly peach) that pops up late in the flavor development but is all the more pronounced for it. Top-notch 2000s Bowmore, crazy good stuff.
    • Finish
      87 87
It's only ten years old, so let's not get ahead of ourselves here, but the intense peach-and-sea-salt aroma that persists even beyond the smoke is still damn impressive.

  2. Gloin scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

The smell convinces with intensity and versatility, the smoke is a good, but not dominant counterpoint to the sour citrus and sweet vanilla notes. The taste goes well with the aroma, the whisky is strong, for the young age, the whisky is quite mature. The palate shows surprisingly little smoke. He only returns in the harmonious long finish, which rounds off the whisky worthily. A very successful Bowmore!
    • Nose
Smoke, lemon, green apple, followed by vanilla, sawdust and a little lime, the vanilla remains, in the end comes a sour herbaceous note, and again the lemon, sugared now
    • Taste
Light body, oily consistency, noticeable onset, slight bitterness, oak, citrus notes, accompanied by a slight tartness like a grapefruit, lime, malt, also vanilla, a trace of salt
    • Finish
It leaves a slight sharpness on the tongue and on the palate for a moment, the smoke returns, lime, malt, slightly bitter, long

Comment: Bowmore Tempest Batch 5, bottled in 2014 at 55.9%. My previous Bowmores from the Core Range couldn't really convince me, at most the Laimrig, the 28er was of course a completely different league. But I like this one from the 1st fill Bourbon barrel at the age of 10. I especially like its fruitiness paired with the fine Bowmore smoke. In combination with the pleasant barrel strength, this is a very successful overall package. It's a shame that no more tempests have been bottled since 2015. 88 points from me. Slaintè!
    • Nose
      89 89
The color is light gold and the Bowmore Tempest lies oily in the Whisky.de nosing glass. Right at the beginning of the nosing, there are delicate smoky notes and a sweet, tropical fruitiness, which are due to the 1st fill Bourbon barrels. The 55.9% are very well integrated and barely noticeable. Over time, the tempest becomes more and more complex in the nose. Peaches, oranges, bananas and vanilla, tender malt as well as a breeze of sea and seaweed complete the excitingly fresh, fruity nosing. With a little water, notes of honey and toffee come through, the smoke becomes weaker with water. I like it very much.
    • Taste
      88 88
The Whisky.de nosing glass sits well on the mouth. The 55.9% then push more on the tongue than nosing would have suggested. At first, the sweet fruity notes dominate. Saliva flow is massively stimulated, over time the “musty” Bowmore smoke comes through, but never intrusive or disturbing, rather completing it. There are also more wood aromas and hints of beeswax on the tongue. Sufficiently complex and dangerously drinkable for 10 years (see filling level of the bottle!).
    • Finish
      87 87
I would describe the finish as medium length. Cool smoke mixes with tropical fruits, vanilla and honey, paired with nuances of a minimal maritime note, fudge and delicate oak notes. I like it very much.

Exactly what you expect from a Tempest Bowmore.
    Enthusiasm 4/5
    Whisky n ° 1213
    • Nose
Moderate peat, fresh fruits that turn exotic after the first sip. Vanilla.
    • Taste
Well corpulent, well integrated alcohol. Sweet spices, exotic fruits and peat are the lion's share.
    • Finish
      On exotic fruits.

    Quicky:

N: fresh Vanilla, tropical fruits mix - sour orange and lemon maracuja , polish, sweet weed smoke , violets (perfumy) 89

T: rather light/medium oily consistency - Tropical fruit and vanilla mix, weedsmoke, violets (88)

D/F: Wood, vanilla, decent sweetend ginger, smoked lemonpeel and sweet smoke (87) (medium)

A very good Bowmore ideed sad they don't sell it anymore - nothing comparable in the core range today (2022)

    Room temperature when drinking: 26℃

Viewing Eyes: Lemon juice smells Nose: Milk flavor brought by BB filling, dense cream, mousse. The green grapes have a slightly sour gas, not enough oil, and smell fresh and pungent. Mint candy, the fragrance of February orchid, lavender washing powder + dried sage flowers are not common. Smoked, sea waves are covered, sprinkled with cheese yoghurt, cream, milk skin, the subsequent sour taste increases, a little dry wheat fragrance, baguette taste Palate: very sour, fruit vinegar, wood, sweet milk, cheerful fresh green Mention, there is even a little minerality, a bit like Hasselblad 10. The second half is very salty, strong smoke, lemongrass, camphor leaf, tea essential oil, light kumquat tail + green tea finishing rhythm Finish: short, bitter, green plants, Wang Zi milk body: medium, fat Feeling explosive, almost no tannin, medium bottom

I tasted at the Whisky Festival 2017. This Bowmorka was sitting well.
    • Nose
The smell is medical, sharply sharp. Gauze, fresh oak, a little grassy and citrus. Green apple, pineapple, vanilla, malt, straw. There is a lot of scents between them, so there is still something to be discovered. (88 b)
    • Taste
Sweet, sweet, with a touch of citrus and freshness, fruit fruit, oak and pineapple. (90 b)

Bowmore is an illustrious distillery on the island of islay. Praised for, especially, the older sherried whiskies. The modern day stuff somehow is not on my radar. But thanks to a range share offered through Het whisky forum, gave me a chance to zoom in todays bottles!
    • Nose
Floral, fruity and juicy nose but somehow also a bit closed. Orange fruits like tangerines and oranges but also some tropical maar like lychees and melon.
    • Taste
Soft, gentle and sweet. Oily and round. Orange fruit peels, mild citrus and barley. Water makes it a bit less accessible and a little more peppery.
    • Finish
Tropical, citrusy and smooth. Vanilla, honey and again oranges. Something I often get with Bowmore. Peated barley is what I get here. Reminds me of the time I’ve visited the distillery and actually went inside their kiln. It was empty at that very moment, but the distinctive smell I got there, is something I get here as well.

Definitely a pleasant Bowmore. But for this price I simply would like something a little more exciting. It’s a little too middle of the road for my palate. Although it’s certainly not bad!

  12. Casketje scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

Disclaimer: I've had a couple of Bowmores before - mainly the standard OBs but just never sat down to really analyze one.

Quite a nice nose, not as smokey as I expected, little bit floral, not very alcoholic either. It feels quite mature for 10 years old. Taste is interesting - mineral smoke, sweetness and then little flashes of tropical fruits come through. Not the type of overt tropical fruits you get in 20+ year old bourbon matured Speysiders (which I adore) but just flashes of them, which continue well into the finish. Apparently this is the Bowmore spirit character, so that's really interesting. All in all a really nice dram.

  13. penumbra scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

Poor people are happy, cost-effective choice.
    • Nose
Sea salt, fish oil, irritating fruit peel oil, slightly unpleasant peat, honey locust, dry smoked flower (violet?), crystal sugar, milk, grains, a little sour, citrus fruits.
Although the level is average, the flavor combination currently seems to be very representative of the winery.
    • Taste
A lot of salt, I know why Mr. Tommy would only drink so little. Chocolate is bitter, soapy, astringent, butter soda biscuits, pepper, toasted wood, fruit acid, milk.
After the cup wakes up, it is still a bourbon barrel full of fat and enough material, but I am not sure whether everyone can adapt to the salty and bitterness in front.
Yes, the fat is better, slightly sweet, a little sour, no tannins, astringent, bitter, no spicy, no alcohol.
    • Finish
Better, black coffee, fruit, salted fish peat, fire roasted.

  14. Whisky Hamster scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

By all accounts this is a subtle malt even if not noticeable at first and/or if denied the time and thought to fully express itself. As an Islay cask strength "monster" it's easy to dismiss the subtle flavors that 1st fill bourbon cask has imparted on the spirits on its 10 year journey. Hidden unterneath there are notes of tropical fruits - albeit (and unfortunately) not as prominent as those of some distillery-only ex-bourbon single cask bottlings. The peat is again distincly different and and at first seems "just" subdued compared to other Islay heavy weights. But there's more than "just less peat" (as if it fell short of offering the full spectrum its cousins pride themselves with). Actually it's not just less peaty but the peat phenols carry other aromas as well, interplay very well with the cask and invite you to discover their flavors from maritime to salty and more. Quite good version of Bowmore cask strength, I just wish they would continue this line and get more away from their colored, chill-filtered, low-strength standard bottlings.

  15. Dre73 scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Had this one H2H with Release 1, this Rel. 6 has way more alcohol on the nose. Both are fruity, with a lot of sweetness after, like standing before a 'oliebollenkraam', powder sugar, waffles. Quite unordinary for a peated whisky...
Both have lot of fruitiness to offer, Release 1 is less intense than 6. The sweet and sweet fruity notes are noticeable in both.
Release 1 is smokier in the finish than Release 6. Although there are lot of similarities, Release 1 defeats Release 6 by 1 point.
    • Nose
      87 87
Peat, bonfiresmoke, initially a lot of pickering alcohol, that gets less later on. Then fruity, ripe fruits, a bit vegetal/organic. Then a lot of sweetness, waffles, powdersugar, the 'oliebollenkraam' experience.
    • Taste
      86 86
Pretty strong, sal ammoniac initially, sweet smoke. Later on more sweetness, fruity, citrus, some vanilla, a bit salty.
    • Finish
      86 86
Still strong and powerful, pretty intense. Sweet smoke, citrus, vanilla, Pretty long, with some salty notes.

  16. Tangtang_WhiskyYoda scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

quite tasty young malt. I like it very much. Here the light fruits combined with the sweetness dominate, the smoke is only incidentally present in the nose.
    • Nose
light smoke, light fruits, slightly sweet, alcohol somewhat present, but not intrusive. Herbs, slightly salty, slightly nutty
    • Taste
sweet smoky, pepper, vanilla, caramel, nuts, light fruits, herbs in the background
    • Finish
briefly strong, sweet and somewhat sour, light fruits, later somewhat nutty, bitter and dry.

    • Nose
Directly smoke, either it is older or at least not very smoky, rather as moderately smoky, smoke is more on the warm side, herb candy, apple, peach, grain, honey, a little vanilla, the most dominant note after the smoke is really extremely sweet herbal candies , The alcohol is clearly noticeable and cools in the nose, warming the sweetness a little, when the glass cools down again the sweetness goes back a little, a trace of cinnamon, after a while the herbs go back a little and it becomes fruity
    • Taste
Apple, herb candy, honey, melon, grapes, some peach, some grapefruit, some pepper, smoke and ash

For the young age really good, here must have been good ex-bourbon barrels at work. Provides very intense flavors for 10 years. Unfortunately, the barrels do not manage to take his youth.
    • Nose
      87 87
What a start. If you like classic ex-bourbon notes, you'll get their money's worth. Custard, some butterscotch and biscuit. Then the other side shows up and it becomes fruity-fresh with aromas like lemon zest, lemon zest / back flavor. Finally, some honey. But always very fresh and a bit too alcoholic.
    • Taste
      84 84
A crazy interplay at first sip. First spicy, then sugar sweet, then sharp again. Here again the vanilla is very present, on the tongue less fruity, more in the direction of the pastry. Add a light spice and a little tingle.
      Finish
    • Finish
      86 86
He stays there for a long time. Warming, cheeks dry and tongue damp. The finish is sweet and also very mild after the warming sharpness. The finish reflects something here again and is really fun. Overall, he can not hide his young age.
