A full-bodied and lovely peaty dram with a delicate filigree orchard
fruitiness. Well-balanced with oak spice, tangy sweetness, lingering
smokiness and a maritime edge. Typical Ledaig, instantly recognisable.
Would recommed to add a few drops of water as the lovely fruitiness
develops nicely at least on my palate.

I thank Kirsch Whisky Import for the sample!

    • Nose
The nose starts off with a deep peatiness, followed by gauze bandage,
rubber and some herbal/grainy notes. Behind that fruity flavours of
green apples, lemons and peaches arrive, nicely lingering with hints of
walnuts, seaweed and tender spiced oak in the back.
    • Taste
Clean and fresh on the palate! Deliciously sweet and fruity with
apricots and stewed green apples, immediately followed by an intensely
warming spiciness of pepper, crystallised ginger, cloves and a lovely
peat fire. Herbal notes, hints of sea salt and smoke towards the finish.
    • Finish
The finish shows good length with a slightly warming spiciness,
complemented by creamy fruit, barley sugar, crisp peat, seaweed and a
hint of smoke on the tail.

WITH WATER: Water significantly tames the
fruitiness and sweetness, bringing more phenols, ashy and maritime
flavours to the fore. On the palate, however, the lovely aroma of
peaches and lemons is still very present, well balanced with ginger,
spiced oak, cloves, peat and subtle seaweed. The finish is medium long,
warm and spicy with creamy vanilla, acacia honey, oak and ginger. Subtle
      peat smoke on the tail.

gentle Ledaig in smell and taste, everything there that makes a Ledaig but very delicate, more for beginners to grasp Ledaig,

Nice Ledaig, balanced well in those old nutty GM oak casks. Just feels one bit milder than the stated 46 abv. Asks for more drams than usual for the desired effect.

    Funky

I recently was offered the possibility to try no less than nine Ledaig from Gordon & Macphail’s Connoisseurs Choice head-to-head, all distilled between 1990 and 2004 and bottled between 2011 and 2017. Well, that was an opportunity I could not pass up. Let’s give those a go. This is the Ledaig that was distilled in 1999 and bottled in 2015. It matured on Refill American Hogsheads.

On the nose, it’s quite funky I must say. Farmy notes, rotting plants, burnt grass and peatsmoke, decorated with a bit of crème brûlée and chestnuts.

The arrival is very soft, bitter and sweet at the same time on barley sugars and grapefruit juice. The smokiness of the peat suddenly becomes very outspoken. I quite like that.

The finish is again rather short, very smoking and warm with notes of nuts and hay.

Lovely funky nose, it’s true, but other that that this is a rather regular Ledaig – nothing wrong with that, to be clear.

Slightly peaty and pleasant, but drunk together with Ardbeg Uigeadail it is eclipsed by the latter.

I like this crystal-clear Ledaig profile, without any off-notes. add 05.11.17 btw. except the Ledaig-specific ones which are inherent ;-)

  15. Bishlouk scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

Nose: Typical Ledaig: farmhouse smoke, honey, vanilla, apricot.

    Palate: Smoke, apricot. Pretty sweet.

Finale: Slight bitterness, always present smoke.

Verdict: Pretty sweet, I would have leaned for a refill Sherry. Not bad, the reduction is well controlled.

Although only drinking strength, the Malt comes quite strong. Pleasant to drink, almost tasty, but still missing something.
    • Nose
green and steamed apples, apple compote, citrus fruits, a little pear and herbs, some smoked meat and a cheese or farm note, harbor air, bandage material (but decreases significantly in the air)
    • Taste
rather thin and fresh, light chocolate, fruits (rather exotic, a little banana), finest sea salt, sweet, comes after the first moments peppery and smoky backwards
    • Finish
long and rather strong, but also not very meaningful; a bit ashy (very fine) and cozy smoke, pleasant and warming, later sweeter (as a sugary sweetness) and reserved fruity
