1697) Royal Brackla, 12YO, Cawdor Estate

The King's Own Whisky, Fuiyoh! Sip this previous core range first before trying the new one.
    • Nose
N- Malty, nut oil, sweet sherry and liquorice. Cereal biscuit and always comforting Hup Seng soda crackers. Well lay on tobacco scents that carries thru the distance well. (86/20)
    • Taste
P- Rather light and muted at times, stays true and simple, but pleasant to the finishing cask with fine coffee and chocolate coating. (86/20)
    • Finish
F- Medium, smooth, the aroma from nosing returns with nut oil, subtle spices and lingering tobacco. (86/20)

      B/B- 86/20

Weighted Rate - 80pt (King's Whisky, cannot give too low)

  7. Don Cassi scored this whisky 77 points Expert Senior

Sweet, malty and fruity on the nose of honey and apricot. Behind it some milk chocolate. Relatively simple and unobtrusive.

In the mouth, light alcohol, citrus and a little spice.

In the finish oranges, nuts and coffee notes and associations of cognac.

Relatively simple malt that doesn't do anything wrong but also can't inspire.

    Grade: 2

There's not much to get excited about.
Then again there is absolutely nothing offending.
It's got a very steady progression and then it just leaves without making any fuzz.
    • Nose
      81 81
Dig the nose in there and you will find the usual sherry notes, but it's very soft and muted. Most likely because of the no more than minimum ABV.
But it's a pleasant nose, nothing off.
    • Taste
      82 82
About what you expect after nosing.
A soft and mellow sherry matured dram, maybe a bit too light. But this makes it very easy drinkable.
    • Finish
      83 83
Some nice nutty flavours, sweet orange.
      Unfortunately not lasting very long.

Weirdly nice but not. Hard to describe the issues, but also hard to describe the good. Overall pretty average for me.
    • Nose
      84 84
I get the sherry, the oak, some banana peel, almond, and red berry. Pretty decent nose overall
    • Taste
      72 72
Very meh.... Just average, with vanilla, some oak coming through, but a distinct alcohol taste which almost overpowers it.
    • Finish
      74 74
Short to medium, with some red berries presenting at the end. Still feeling the alcohol effects which detracts from the overall enjoyment.

  15. Lumpowitz scored this whisky 84 points Expert Junior

    • Nose
Fruity, swings back and forth between sweetness and acidity. Raspberries, gooseberries, sultanas, ripe lemons, marzipan, nuts, milk chocolate. Good complexity.
    • Taste
Surprisingly full-bodied for the 43% alcohol. Fruity sherry, whole milk and nut chocolate, fine spices. The sweetness declines, dryness prevails.
    • Finish
Medium length finish with delicate wood notes, nuts and nutmeg.

Unfortunately, just too underpowered. Some decent sherry notes mixed in there and an interesting bitter or sharp "bite" on the palette at the death. However, there is a little bit of watery-ness too that I found a bit off-putting.

  22. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

Solid malty Speysider with a nutty, dry sherry touch. Tasty, but nothing unusual.

  23. Lumpowitz scored this whisky 84 points Expert Junior

    • Nose
Fruity sherry, red grapes, citrus (orange, lemon), milk chocolate, a tiny trace of smoke, liquid caramel.
    • Taste
      Milk chocolate, mild sherry.
    • Finish
Medium long with some oak and dark chocolate.

To state the obvious first: the strength is way too low and makes things a bit *too* soft and watery. With that out of the way: this is an elegant, dry and multi- (rather than one-)dimensional Speysider with enough unique characteristics and particularities to make it stand out.

The nose is especially nice, with soft florals, dry sherry, bitter oranges, faint liquorice, and musty wood. None of this is loud or in-your-face; it all arrives in a whisper.

On the tongue, things are somewhat less impressive. There's some soft sweetness initially, then garden-fruit juiciness and dry tannins vie for superiority, with the bitter side of things winning out in the end. On the whole, a rather astringent and oak-driven affair, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. This one actually pulls it off quite nicely. A good apéritif (in the tradition of the Italian "bitter"), at any rate.
The finish is medium, bitter, slightly gingery and peppery. Again, this sounds worse than it is. Somehow the tart elements do not disturb here but come  across as delicate, restrained and, for lack of a better word, deliberate.

A nice whisky if you like things soft (in terms of strength) and dry (in terms of taste). If you like the AnCnoc 12, you'll love this. Worth it if you can get a bottle for under 35 € and are not yet spoiled by >46% whiskies.

    Beautiful entry-level whisky
    • Nose
      85 85
Figs, some vanilla and hints of leathery elements, later also barrel flavor and floral aromas
    • Taste
      83 83
Mild, creamy texture, but slightly watery, figs, minimal tobacco and chocolate, sweet woody aromas
    • Finish
      80 80
Medium, oak and fruity elements, but unfortunately also alcoholic, which refer to the departure into the middle class

  29. Alex Fridays scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

Royal Brackla 12YO is a quite good whisky. The aroma is a sweet and fresh with fruits, cake, furniture polish, fresh grass, pineapple, perfume notes. The palate continues the aroma profile and goes with dried fruits, tropical fruits, polish, grass and oak notes. The finish is a middle, sweet, dry and spicy with vanilla and fruits notes. It’s a smooth, sweet and easy to drink whisky.

  30. Allandale scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

    A rich and full body.
    • Nose
Very gentle and leafy, perfumed floral notes, almonds and plump vine fruits. Nice.
    • Taste
Refreshingly leafy, and develops a well rounded floral character which  is both fruity and spicy.
    • Finish
An extremely  pleasant, long finish. Steeped in sherried richness.

  31. Dre73 scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

Soft, slightly watery, flat. Such a whisky that passes silently, okay, no more and no less.

  32. Whisky101 scored this whisky 78 points Expert Senior

A really nice whisky, not overly complex and a little weak due to the 40% vol. A very enjoyable dram but it will not challenge you.
    • Nose
A beautiful nose; apricots, raisins, oranges, you know for sure this is a sherry cask whisky.
    • Taste
Smooth and creamy, beautiful flavours from Oloroso sherry, a light dusting of spice from ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg but all very light. It settles down to oranges and raisins with a slight taste of chocolate.
    • Finish
Quite long. The fruit and spice fade away and lead into a beautiful creamy sherry.

    An
interesting entry bottle for Royal Brackla (my first at that!). Decently
complex and the 40% are not too weak at all. I’ll look out for its older
    brothers and sisters for sure.
    • Nose
      Amalgamations
of mango and capers – sulfurous associations, maybe ink. A dash of caramel,
honeydew, and miniscule smoke give rise to a slightly alcoholic nose. The spirit
tries to assert itself against tannins and fruity undertones of orange and pear
peelings. Overall, the two types of maturation (initial & finish) are
      balanced quite well.
    • Taste
      Bold
arrival. Juicy ginger, peppery vanilla, sweet saw dust. Could you consider this
muddled? No. I think this is rather complex for a relatively ‘young’ malt.
Oranges and a touch of marzipan. Perhaps.
    • Finish
      Medium.
A lot of caramel, sweet honey (the likes coming from those squeezing bottles),
      and nutty tannins.

For me a good affair, I do not really understand the local rating - maybe the price / performance ratio does not go too well.
    • Nose
Nuts, spices, tropical fruits - pineapples, oranges, pearls, fruit compote - pleasant full aroma
    • Taste
Tropical fruit, woodiness, then the onset of spices, nuts, coffee - very good
    • Finish
Nuts, nougat, vanilla, woody, oranges - a sweet tooth

    • Nose
Fresh and fruity at first impression, green apple, lemon, orange. Then sweet notes like sherry, chocolate and vanilla are added. Light oak and hazelnut in the background. The alcohol is not noticeable, all in all a pleasantly round smell.

    • Taste
Here are the sherry and the chocolate in front of me clearly. The sweetness is spreading in the mouth. In the background I taste nuts and spicy notes.
    • Finish
Medium long, sweet, the oak comes a little clearer, warming.

I think it's good, he looks a little more than 12 years old, very tasty, despite the 40% but rich, not too thin.
    • Nose
Raisins, orange marmalade, nutty-dry, some soil, old foliage
    • Taste
tart orange, very nutty-spicy, dark chocolate, earthy

Really successful. A delicious, sweet malt.
    • Nose
Sweet, tropical and bright (summer) fruit and honey. At the same time Sherrytoene, warm vanilla and milk chocolate. Orange zest, hay, malt and some oak in the background.
    • Taste
Orange, sherry, malt. Again oak and this time dark chocolate with espresso and I mean to perceive nuttiness and a touch of smoke.
    • Finish
Long and warm, slightly dry. Malt, oranges, chocolate. And ... is there some smoke again ... very far back ?!
