Pot still sour mash whiskey from Michter's distillery in Shaefferstown. The last remaining distillery of Pennsylvania, which sadly closed in February 1990.  This particular style of whiskey consists mostly of corn but not enough to call it bourbon. Also some used barrels were used for aging, so no straight whiskey as well. According to Chuck Cowdery's recommended book 'The Best Bourbon You'll Never Taste' this sort of whiskey was an original creation made only by Michter's distillery. The last couple years the distillery has received a cult status because of the A.H. Hirsch Reserve labeled whiskeys from 1974 (which was actually bourbon especially made by contract for Mr. Hirsch). Michter's as a brand is still around - owned by Chatham Imports in New York -, but has nothing to do with the original distillery. The modern Michter's is sourced whiskey from Kentucky.
    • Nose
Soft and luscious. Lots of glue. Sawdust. Later on hints of vanilla and molasses. Cherries. Mint cream chocolates. Notes of cedar wood as well.
    • Taste
Astringent and zesty at first sip. Lemon pie. Lime. Also oranges and tangerines. Developing into a more buttery mouthfeel. Toffee and honey. Some maple syrup at the background. Lots of different tastes to discover.
    • Finish
Medium long and dry. Toasted almonds. Anise. Pine at the end. It's all quite subtle.

[July, 2018]  A quick review of a small sample.

The colour is deep copper and the texture shows fat tears with slow legs.  The nose offers a bold profile of fruits, honeys, spices and some OBF (furniture polish).  It is not very complex but pretty nice.  The dram arrives warming and coating on the palate with a minor bitter-astringent feeling (tannins).  The taste is fruity sweet with a dominant apricot flavour that you either like or not - I do.  The finish is of medium length and adds no new impressions beside a minor drying ending (plastics).  Water smoothes the dram without changing its profile - I like it best a little reduced.

This is easy to quaff given you like apricots and OBFs (old bottle flavours)...

Its reasonable but just a little one dimensional, much better than I was expecting, something different is always good.
    • Nose
Vanilla, pear, apple, furniture polish and white chocolate.
    • Taste
My first impression was boring and bland but then there is a pleasant apricot sweetness.

The sweetness grows with vanilla, bubble gum, fruit gums and another layer of taste that I am struggling to pinpoint almost like corn?
    • Finish
      Reasonable length, quite pleasant

This was a sample courtesy of lincolnimp. I have an unopened bottle of Michter's, so I am looking forward to cracking that.

I quite enjoyed this, it was something different and that's what I like.
    • Nose
Wow, this is different, Vanilla, Hairspray my mother used to use to use in the 70's, red roses, ripe plum, magnolia paint, and nectarine.
    • Taste
Dolly mixture sweets, quite smooth and again some plum and marshmallows. The candy sweetness can be a little overpowering but it's not sickly in any way.
    • Finish
A medium finish with vanilla and something banana flavoured.
