Obviously, Macallan actually runs an excellent barrel selection. This "only" 12-year-old whisky can certainly compete with significantly older manufacturers, at least if you like mild sherry cask matured whiskies. Although not cheap, but 90/100 points for a 12-year-old, I do not really forgive often. For me, I have decided to have one of these now always in the house.

Very surprised how good this is. Much better than the 12yo at 40% (that was way too watered-down with barely any taste on the palate). My brother lent me his bottle that he got from the US. In Canada these were 40%. I feel shafted!

Good nose with sweet milk and dark chocolate with medium cooked fruit.
    • Taste
      87 87
Lots of chocolate with berry fruit.
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium to long. A very good finish! Feels stronger than a 43%, but in a good way!

Elegant. Flower shop, sherry, some honey and vanilla. Marzipan with chocolate. Overall similar, but more intense than the 40% version.
    • Taste
Light. Sherry, honey, almonds, marzipan. Some walnut.

12yr pre-2006 bottlings (purple matte packaging) are several points higher than the current version

A really nice sherry dominated malt. More does not have to be said.
    • Nose
The first nose is already a seduction. Lots, lots of sherry! In addition to toffee, many dark fruits. Dates coated with chocolate, raisins, honey, the fruit basket is difficult to define, most likely strawberries, blueberries and blackberries but all a bit older, surprisingly for me a slightly musty slightly fermented note, this elegant oak, vanilla, leather, always highlighted with fine sherry sweets
    • Taste
mild, sweet sherry, honey, chocolate, the dark fruits from the nose come back, raisins, a few percent more would stand, some oak, which is increasingly clear, slightly bitter
    • Finish
again slightly fermented fruit, leather, a lot of sherry, subtle oak, coffee, chocolate, almond butter, medium-long.

The Macallan emits a wonderful sherry aroma with lots of spicy wood notes. In taste and on the finish, the malt is dominated by spicy wood flavors. A delicious sherry whisky, where I found the then paid price of 70 euros for a 12-year-old single malt even at that time very borderline.
    • Nose
An elegant sherry aroma rises from the glass. Dark fruits such as raisins or dates mix with a fruity sweetness. Spicy notes of wood come through the honey-like sweetness, a touch of vanilla makes itself felt. I imagine myself tasting a slight hint of leather and tobacco while the drops, oily and creamy, slowly and cumbersomely run back into the glass after panning.
    • Taste
The first sip of a cool and fine-spicy wood note is noticeable. Then fruity sweetness briefly flashes on, before tart and spicy woody notes dominate the taste. For a long time, the spiciness exudes a chubby warm mouthfeel before the aroma of roasted almonds and nuts becomes noticeable. Again there is a hint of tobacco or a very subtle smoky note, leather flavors are added.
    • Finish
Spicy and subtly bitter, the finish begins with a subtle leather and tobacco flavor. Spicy wood is slightly bitter and gives a long, chubby mouthfeel. Slight heat with a touch of pepper pushes forward. Slowly the finish ends with a fine nut aroma.
