Whisky Reviews for Dufftown 1988 CA

Unsurprisingly, this a completely different league compared to the "Singleton of Dufftown 12" I had before . The only similarity I could find was the herbal/spicy finish.
    • Nose
      90 90
Reveals it's age immediately: it's complex and has a nice 'dusty' quality. The initial whiff of nail polish vanishes quickly and is followed by a fruit basket: banana peel, grapefruit, wild peach and mango. Becomes more oaky after a while, with some mocha coffee too. A venerable nose!
    • Taste
      88 88
Intense: vanilla, chocolate and some sour citrus fruits. A nice spicyness with white pepper, ginger and tarragon. Becomes a bit tart after a while, unfortunately.
    • Finish
      89 89
Long and firm finish with roughly the same flavours and more dried herbs. No tartness however, which is good.

How things have changed for the better since the last time I had this one in my glass. Back then I thought it was impossible to get this bottle for a fair price, 6 months later I own 2 of these bottles for it’s original CA release price (and that’s a little less then the price mentioned above). Tonight I poured 2 drams and both me and my friend really enjoyed this! Some things were new, some things were like coming home. Every once in a while you find a whisky that is spot on for your taste, this is one of those whiskies for me.
    • Nose
A very mature, complete and complex nose. Full bodied and assertive. Fresh&sour Apple, coffee beans, mocca, charcoal, subtle spices.
    • Taste
Full bodied, creamy, warming, sweet and soft. Very well balanced and a perfect integration of the alcohol. Apple compote, pear juice, fruitpulp, ginger powder.
    • Finish
Long. Sweet freshness of oranges, after that quite some dried green herbs like oregano and thyme. Also ginger powder again and mature oak.

Duffi you smell so good. Boa wow cool
    • Nose

Almond and fresh lemons with peels but not sour at all but fruity and fresh. 51% are not noticeable at all, super involved. The. It's a great bourbon hol, almost like sandalwood. (reminds me of the 38 glenallachie moodie line from the whisky agency. Then comes caramel, lightly seared and lots of honey. A little orange
    • Taste
      92 92
Wow it does not disappoint. Fruity orange lemon with a great wood, noble and fruity spicy. No idea how to call it but this is an extremely good barrel of wood. Very fine and super integrated, exactly Mei Ding. Now comes cocoa, but original ... This is not a sherry barrel?
    • Finish
      92 92
The cocoa sounds along with it and then honey and vanilla come along. Conclusion and is clad in the mild wood. What a painter
      .... Just genius

Duffy in town is a real joy.
    • Nose
      89 89
Seductive fruit flavors, preserved grapes, apple pie and a bit of glue, pine furniture. Fresh, fruity and yet complex-interwoven.
    • Taste
      89 89
Elderberry notes, spicy honey aromas. Pine resin, cedar wood.
Great oiliness, intense summer flower and heather aromas with even longer standing time.
    • Finish
      88 88
Quite dry like a bitter white wine, finely structured and the delicious fruit tones on the nose can be found again.

Beautiful dram, really develops into a complex fruit bomb over time.
    • Nose
      90 90
Starts of a little weird with some glue and sourness. Give it time; I'd say at least half an hour and some hand warmth or some drops of water. Eventually very fruity with a candied sweetness. Sour apple, pear, pineapple, peach, banana shake, sugared peach and banana candy, vanilla, honey, toffee, some spicy wood dust in the background.
    • Taste
      90 90
Full and creamy, apple, pear, sweet citrus, tropical, banana, pineapple, peach, fruitcake, syrupy honey, fudgy, a subtle warm spiciness.
    • Finish
      89 89
Medium length: juicy and syrupy fruitiness, tropical, hard candy, toffee, mildly drying.

If only I was able to lay my hands on this bottle for somewhere around the release price..this is completely my cup of tea. Tremendous bottle, impressive bottle, sensational bottle! Well done Cadenhead!
    • Nose
This is a very sophisticated nose. It’s an old style nose. That musty/dusty layer with old oak I love so much, is spot on. Beneath that there is a burst of ripe tropical fruits like banana’s and pineapples. There is a certain gentle smokiness going on in the nose. Smokiness in a toasted oak kind of way. Mild bourbon spices are present as well, supporting the whole. This nose really intrigues me. Marvelous stuff!
    • Taste
It’s like chewing on fruitpulp. This is very, very nice!! It’s sweet, a wee dry and has a fleshy structure. Certainly not a common thing which makes me love it even more. Dried oak, licorice, vanilla and honey.
    • Finish
The finish is long and very pleasing! The main course here seems to be about mild spices and herbs. I get mild peppers, oregano, ginger and thyme. After that some ripe fruits are showing up. It keeps developing for quite a while. There is an wee dry note to it, which is kept in balance by the fruits. It gives a very warming experience. It ends with sugared Haribo peach candies.

This goes straight to the wishlist not knowing if I will even be able to get my hands on, but I got to try!

    • Nose
ripe apples and (bright, freshly opened) garden and orchards, melons, honey, vanilla, wood notes (with dry moss) and some leather, sweet, creamy and tempting, well-hidden a little dry dry sausage and bay leaf; with time it gets sweeter and warmer, and fruit mousse adds to the fruity notes
    • Taste
spicy and slightly mild pepper, bananas (rather ripe), fresh (almost mentholig), oak and a few nuts, light green fruits with little acidity
    • Finish
long and warm; Herbal sweets, fruity, marzipan, sweet with a pleasant bitter oak / oak note that lingers and pours
