Whisky Reviews for Clynelish 1997 MBl

4 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 87.05 points

  1. LDB scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

Nose:This Clynelish starts off with the trademark waxy nose, including wild honey. Also toffee, lemon curd, and above all apple! Apple crumble with cinnamon and cream, with the slightest hint of nutmeg and black pepper. No alcoholic nip whatsoever.

    Taste:

It is obviously a sweet and sour apple, first you get a waxy mouthfeel, then a muscular attack, a certain acidity shines through now. But it is all so beautifully balanced! Fruity and spicy without being overtly sweet - a great combo in my book.Finish:

Oak and vanilla are lingering for a pretty long time. This must have been an amazing first-fill bourbon cask. But again, the savoury note is not over the top. Certain mineral notes come up as well.

    Comment:

An extremely well-balanced, well-put-together Clynelish without any posh attitude, top-notch bourbon cask maturation which yields a spicy, but at all times creamy, waxy and elegant malt. Definitely recommend for those who can appreciate a good Clynelish.

The nose looks so innocent, so light, so fresh, because the onset on the tongue is almost brutal. In any case, clearly different than expected, which is not meant negative. He is extremely successful, only the slightly metallic note in the finish disturbs the overall picture a little.
    • Nose
Fruity and fresh nose. In the background, a waxy note is waiting to be able to work forwards through the fruit notes of yellow pear, banana and melon. Lots of honey and milk chocolate. The flavors are subtle, but concise and promising.
    • Taste
Strong, waxy and oily onset, lining the mouth immediately with lots of honey and pear sauce. Quickly set next to the fruit note cocoa and milk chocolate. The darker aromas soon displace the fruit, carry harsh honey, oak and slightly harsh herbs with it.
    • Finish
Medium long, very little dry, lots of honey and vanilla, now dark chocolate, oak (more than at the beginning). Slightly metallic at the end.
