Whisky Reviews for Port Charlotte 2004 MBl

15 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 88.47 points

  1. ARDBERG scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Very bland PC. The sherry buffers the smoke and peat too much for my liking and overtames it and leaves too sweet a finish for my tongue. Still good stuff but can't live up to high PC standards so not my favourite PC.

  2. JohannesB scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

This whisky looks older than it is - I'm particularly excited by the portentous smoke of the Port Charlottet, which blends into far more complex flavors that blend beautifully with the strong sherry influence.
    • Nose
Burnt chocolate muffins, raisins, (baked) almonds, old wooden box and some sulfur. Fruity sherry with very dark berries, chocolate and nuts.
Over time, the restrained smoke becomes somewhat phenolic, but remains comparatively back.
    • Taste
At first very sweet with milk chocolate, almonds, raisins and red grapes. Then smoke and alcohol with power on the tongue and awaken with the typical pepperiness of Port Charlotte, the sweet Sherrynoten properly to life.
    • Finish
Smoke, ashes, tobacco, leather, nuts, wood smoke and a little salty spray leave a medium-long and warming finish in the mouth. An idea of black coffee and very dark chocolate remains even longer than the smoke in the mouth.

  3. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

In fact a pretty dirty profile. Nevertheless, due to the strong sherry influence rather a tamed Port Charlotte, the peat is here only his part to the exciting flavor profile. A certainly own, but great whisky.
    • Nose
First comes a strong sweet sherry note in the nose, accompanied by maritime notes, seaweed, diesel, light sulfur, docks. The nose is astonishingly reserved, the peat only hinteudet.
    • Taste
The fireworks start in the mouth. Lots of sherry, light sulfur, now clear peat, to the bitter-sweet notes of sherry keg, a little salt, some menthol and some pepper.
    • Finish
Salt, peat, a bacon-sweet sherry-smoke combo, plus a good dose of bitter oak. Sounds like oak, some salt and a little sulfur.

The basic structure is very tasty. But the sulfur is not an exclusively positive supplement, even for me, who can actually take sulfur quite well. Full review (german): https://keinehalbendrinks.de/2020/08/13/alle-port-charlotte-teil-2/

Smoky raisins and plums, very sweet, wet wood and furniture polish, strong chocolate, beautiful greasy and typical Port Charlotte fat
    • Taste

Creamy and strong, very sweet, red fruits and slightly rising smoke, chocolate, some raisins and plums, getting slightly dry
    • Finish
      89 89
Creamy and sweet on the palate, lots of chocolate, some smoke, very pleasant and slightly warming

  10. Kantenmechaniker scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

All in all, not a bad whisky, but with smears in the mouth and aftertaste, there a bit closed and inharmonious or slightly alcoholic. Water helps here though.
    • Nose
      89 89
wow, directly a full load of milk chocolate, over a fruity sweetness, raspberry, but also a broth of dark fruit, creamy, some caramel, now I have to think of smoke, because the sherry is so dominant and steals the smoke, the show Smoke is ashen with a slight spiciness, tobacco, burned waffle dough
    • Taste
      87 87
creamy, first slightly closed in the mouth, slightly hot, rather acidic and dry, less sweet than the nose promises, the chocolate is now also rather dark, raisins, the Sud is also found in the mouth and the mouthfeel goes in this direction, Again, smoke is only beginning to appear in my mind, slightly cinnamon and dry
he gets better with water, the unpleasant start is not there anymore, he opens something, then it's quite fun to drink
    • Finish
      87 87
Nuts, chocolate, tart and sour, barely smoke, medium-long, the mouth is a bit occupied, also better with water
