Whisky Reviews for Port Charlotte 2004 MBl

16 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 89.41 points

  1. HammerHead scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

A pretty 'clean' (as in: definitely not as smoky and funky as some other bottlings) sherried PC. Well balanced and with a great finish
    • Nose
      89 89
Sherry sweetness, plum, wood filler, leather, smoked ham, salted peanuts, caramel and a hint of cinnamon.
    • Taste
      90 90
Dark dried fruits, a syrupy mouthfeel, mild BBQ-smokiness, oily, nutty, salty, mild wood spices.
    • Finish
      90 90
Long: mild ash notes, toasted wood, salted and smoked ham, a dried red fruit sweetness.

Lots of leathery sherrynotes, polished mahogany wood and subtle peatsmoke. A spicy, deep and seductive nose. A smell like taking the stairs down to an old, damp winecellar. Like other Port Charlotte sherry casks released by Donald Hart, this is a very unusual profile for PC. It leans more towards older Ardbegs in style, which I definetly like. Tastes much older then ten years. Great stuff!

    Barbecue

The Maltman is a label from the Meadowside Blending Company, run by Donald Hart (which we also know from the Hart Brothers releases) and son Andrew Hart. This Port Charlotte, matured on an oloroso sherry cask, was released back in 2015. Judging by the color, this was a very active cask.

On the nose, this translates into lots of dark and sweet notes like plums and dates, bacon on the barbecue with honey on top and baked banana. It sports some baby breath, which I often find in Port Charlotte. The peat is rather subdued and hardly gets a chance to show itself. Sherry dominates.

Despite the high ABV, this malt arrives soft and easy. Immediately, next to the sweet and dark fruit from the nose, I get a big swallow of brackish water. The peat rears its head. Salted caramel, ashes, burnt meat and liquorice candy. Then some bitter limes. Quite mouth coating and very pleasant.

In the finish – which is pleasantly long – I get more salt and ashes.

Well, this comes very close to The Heretic, I must say.

  8. Rom scored this whisky 89 points Expert Junior

The nose is woody, green, more smoky than peaty. Attack on the ash, in which one feels again green notes, then immediately after coal. The texture is sweet, the whole pleasant, powerful. Very long finish on the charcoal, with a hint of clove, which becomes a bit bitter when dying out. Good whisky but which presents a style a little different from that of OB.
