I feel like this Kavalan by itself offers a very nice heavily sherried malt at a reasonable price but when you do a side by side with some of the older heavily sherried malts like the single cask glendronachs, this is when the Kavalan falters. It's very simple and has a thin mouthfeel. Not sure if it's just the young age or if it's the light Kavalan distillate, but currently I think the reason Kavalans are punching above its weight is that they use very nice casks -- ie they are very cask-driven. You can taste the fresh sherry but that deep old chocolatey rancio sherry complexity that comes with the aging process is missing. For that, I usually don't give these solist sherry  casks more than 90 points.

Nose: OOOMPH!!!! Glue, sherry, big hit of dry fruit. Needs quite a bit of water. With water: More wood and spices come up. It improves with water.

Taste: BOOOM!!! Sherry hits you right in the face. Sweet syrupiness. Hint of spices and some pepper. Raisin. With water: More sweet and sour notes as in a red fruit and citrus mix.

Body: full on, heavy bodied whisky.

Finish: Medium-long: Sherry, sherry, sherry, hint of glue, hint of some bittersweet oranges.

Price: Bought it for 110 euro's which is a reasonable price for a whisky like this.

Presentation: Sober but decent. Virtual no bblablabla from the marketing department.

I guess you either love this one (which I couldn't imagine) or you absolutely don't. I don't like the way it's constructed, too much off balance notes. It bounces all over the place. If you would pay € 150 or up for this one big chance you might end up disappointed.

    • Nose
Pretty strong on sherry, the alcohol is pretty harsh on the nose. Some sweetness present, raisins and dark fruit. Imho these are all pretty much destroyed by a super glue scent that comes and kills most of the nice nosing. For me there's too much glue and some traces of rusty metal. Off balance.
    • Taste
Well, the taste doesn't disappoint considering what the nose promises; sweet sherry for just a second and then the super glueyscent can also be tasted. Together with some oxidising metal and, finally some red fruits. Not too much spices sadly. Compared to a single cask Glendronach this misses about everything that make some Glendronachs such outstanding sherry bombs. It's almost as maturation has been done in an IBC instead of a sherry butt. Artificial notes in the palate ruin most of the taste. With water it doesn't get any better.
    • Finish
For such a heavy sherried whisky finish is pretty short. I guess the lack of spices doesn't help either. Again there's a off note due to the super glueyness that stays around at all time.
