Ian Macleod Islay Single Malt As We Get It 61.3%. Palest yellow. Aroma is cream covered apple pie, custard creams, pleasing milky creamy soft oak. Taste is salty rounded peat, soft smoke, very salt-forward flavour, light oak, salty oily peat. It's ok - quite simplistic with its density of flavour. 3.15/75 With water I get some coal gas coming through the estery spirit. I preferred the dram without water.

    • Nose
fresh, drier smoke and peat, roasted smoked meat, marshmallow, fried onion, sweet undertones, dark chocolate, dust DILUTED: surprisingly sharper, lemon, peeps vanilla, asphalt, sweeter, hint of pears, smoked at the end
    • Taste
gradually sharpens, peat, dry smoke and coals, sweet, pepper DILUTED: cream, smoke bomb, traces of sweet fruit, bitter
    • Finish
bitter, omelette, cream, smoke rather in the background, later fruit compote, herbs, vegetables

Heavy smoke, medicinal, some light fruitiness appears. The profile of the nose is typical like the Ardbeg profile.
    • Taste
      88 88
Iodine with stone fruits and peppers, yet balanced
    • Finish
      88 88
A warm long finish, due to the abv of 61.3%, but it never disappoints. Nice & punchy!

    Balance (21)
    Fun (83)
    • Nose
Candy, citrus, young but not defective, tap water, dampness and fresh dough. With water, it becomes more interesting that citruses acquire a mint shade, very unusual (21)
    • Taste
      Sweet, Spicy, Fruit, Smoky (21)
    • Finish
Candy finish, ashes and paper (20)

How old is that - 3, 4, 5 years? More probably not.
What kind of people who explicitly want young, light, peat, volts on their mouths. Then the 43 € are certainly well spent, otherwise not.
Could also be a good base for "Celp - The Seaweed Experience", neat waterpist in and ready.
Or as Islay Newmake replacement for own Fassreifungsexperimente.
    • Nose
mineral, fresh, light, some white chocolate, strong smoke between medically, flower cut and scorched cable, neat white pepper; with water a little sweeter, creamier, milk chocolate, pear, cucumber and a touch of cooked onions
    • Taste
huijuijui - creamy-milk-chocolate, burnt-bitter and very pale peppery; with water: less spicy, more milk chocolate, caramel, a hint of pear and apple compote
    • Finish
Laaaang, hot, pepper, bitter greens ... the more water, the creamier-chocolatier

  6. Cubey666 scored this whisky 82 points Connoisseur

Quite a hard and heavy hitter on the peatsmoke. Misses some complexity, it's still a bit young and spirity. It misses a bit the full bodiness which is present at Octomores

Notes by memory from drams shared with karloff in Dufftown. Thanks mate!
    • Nose
Right up there with the most peated Octomore.

      Everything Islay, and then some.

This is truely love it or hate it stuff, and I loved it.

Complex? Hard to tell through the peat, but it's got soot, rubber and sea salt.
    • Taste
If you love peat monsters there's no other way than neat. And it goes down surprisingly easy.

It's extremely bold, with peat, smoke, soot, rubber, liqorice, sea weed and iodine.
    • Finish
As expected, you won't get rid of this for some time.

Not much evolvement, but it stays on.

This isn't for the faint of heart and for die hard peat lovers only or those who have an adventures palette or just a little bit crazy.
    • Nose
This smells like an old steam train pulling into a station and the devil is driving it. A chimney sweeps soot bag. No need to trim my nose hair tonight. The peat is really strong and almost smothers everything else. Liquorice wood stick. There is some fruit notes but they are very faint. Really old leather bag and a box of matches. Also a wet dog who's been swimming in the sea.
    • Taste
Thick and oily mouthfeel as you would expect because I have decided to drink it as I get it and it certainly packs a punch. Call me crazy. Is it very young? I don't think so. It has age to it but not a lot I think. Citrus and banana pith, Victory V cough sweet. I think I described a Big Peat as smelling like the Balrog's breath. Well I can imagine this is what his piss tastes like and it tastes pretty damn good ;)
    • Finish
The finish is very long and just smolders well into the night. There is something sweet in the background . Almost like a liquorice all sorts sweet.

Fine peated whisky. Has a somewhat wild character, clearly some younger whisky. Initially also fairly sharp / peppery, becomes less after the course.
All in all a very entertaining dram.

  14. wisekyofcourse scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

lemon, iodine, smoke then peat, spices in the background! back of orange fruits and malt! .. and the strong alcoholic smell
    2nd:
lime, intense peat, wet wood, orange peel, some glue in tube, and a herbaceous freshness.

  15. lachaineduwhisky did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

A multi-faceted whisky rather confusing: difficult to assign a global score.
I would say : Nose and Finale: 2/5 pure, 3/5 with water
Palate: 3/5 pure, 4/5 with water
    Whisky n ° 1253
    • Nose
Frank smoke. A mineral and metallic side, surely a sign of youth. Very lively, then sweeter. Not very balanced. Some notes of white chocolate give a little depth but not enough to put it back. With water, it's better: the milk chocolate asserts itself, the malt emerges and some fruits appear.
    • Taste
Intense with a fruity heart, it's not easy to drink! With water, it's better! Sweet and warm to perfection, it is also very peppery.
    • Finish
Long finish and smoke, vegetal too. With water, just as long but also thick and spicy.

I got this as present for Christmas and was very, very suprised by the quality they achieve with a young malt, this is really fun stuff!
    • Nose
The Ardbeg distillery character and the well known combination of smoke and malty sweetnes hits you massively. Lovely notes of lemon, grapefruit and licorice.
    • Taste
a peaty steam train with a lot of malty sweetnes really similar to the nose. superb!
    • Finish
medium to long, sweet and smoky, a touch of bitterness reminds on the citrus notes

  19. St. Pauli scored this whisky 81 points Connoisseur

Too young, too strong. That's my conclusion. I was only able to taste appreciate it with quite some water. Otherwise, it's a liability to both my nose and tongue.
    • Nose
I am doubting how I should call the whisky after first nosing: young & feisty, or barely legal? Let's wait a couple of minutes. Nope, that didn't really help. The nose is too much on new make, almost sickly: sweat socks, vomit, pears, lemon and lots of medicinal notes. Iodine, plasters, peat, salty cod, and only a little smoke.
With water, the sickly elements seem to disappear. There is a faint vanilla smell.
    • Taste
Quite harsh without water, with a full dose of wet peat, iodine and bandages, along with pear drops, cheese and pepper.
With water, the whisky seems more mature.
    • Finish
Without water, the nose prickle I get from the finish is just too much. Its also tongue numbing, with loads of peat, ash, iodine and chili peppers.
Only with quite a splash of water, the finish is doable, leaving some vanilla and wood shavings next to the aforementioned sensations.

  20. Pyromann scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

A rough affair for guys. A very strong combination of peat, smoke, coal and smoked. Feeling even stronger than the classic Laphroaig or Ardbeg.
    • Nose
Smoke, smoked, intense smoke, intense peat. After a while, a dice of coal. Indications of disinfection. The scent is really strong and intense.
    • Taste
Very strong, oily whisky. Significant smoke, coal and peat. I'm trying to bite my tongue. After swallowing an explosion of smoke and peat.
    • Finish
Smoke. I chew a coal dice. Cut. Extremely long. Here's the cube in the chewing gum the next day.

This is an independent Ardbeg bottling with a lot of alcohol but the alcohol is nowhere near dominant. It enriches the flavours and brings out the best of the Ardbeg. For its price, it is the single best dram for a buck that I know in the 10 years that I am drinking whisky.

I am going to buy 2 because this much Islay quality for this price is nowhere else on the market.

Malty with a catchy peat nose.

Caramel, herbals and peaty (smoky) taste.
    • Finish
Spice(peppers) and bitters but the peat maintains for a while.
