Ledaig and 2004, much like Glendronach 1993 and Ben Nevis 1996, is a quite recent vintage that should be one of the better examples of what the Tobermory distillery is capable of with their Ledaig offerings. On the nose; Powerful. Peat and sweetness on steroids, but so balanced. Peat, ash, sauerkraut, bonfire smoke, soot, oil, brine and smoked meat. Very coastal feeling to it. Then tangerine, apricot, grilled pineapple, orange peel, sweet pepper (Peppadew), caramel, chocolate sauce, vanilla, porridge, and salted peanut.
In the mouth; Oily and mouth coating, I wouldn't even give this 50% for an ABV. Very salt n' peppery here! Peat, ash, charcoal, brine, salt, pepper and bouillon/beef stock. Further on citrus zest, orange, dried apricot and raisin. Less emphasis on the fruit but more on the sweetness with toffee fudge, burnt sugar, dark chocolate and sultana. Vanilla, honey, licorice, paprika and salted peanut too. The finish is a long delight. Dark chocolate, pepper, salty licorice and Sauternes wine. A little drying but with sufficient sweetness.

I understand why these 2004 sherried Ledaigs are so popular. Such a bang for your buck back in the days, sadly I missed out on them. Very good!

    Based on a sample.

Comment: Why? Why does Signatory have to come with such barrels now? Another category to look out for! Very good sherry-smoke whisky, can keep up with every Islay bottling. Good balance, almost a gentleman and yet a little dirt on the plug. Ingenious bottling.
    • Nose
Pure: if you did not know what you have in front of you would immediately think of a wonderfully sherry matured Islayer, most likely Laphroaig, or even PC. Everything is just right here. Sweet, greasy fruit notes, I remember once again BBQ sauce and a pleasant, not superficial honey-sweet smoke like the Laphi CS. Very amazing for Ledaig: no stinker. Rather cold-burning beech wood. A touch of new leather jacket after the first bar in the smoking area. An almost perfect style. With water: is even more complex, it comes now a little brackish harbor flavor and lots of tobacco as in a cigar shop. hot!
    • Taste
Pur: sweet-kräutriger approach, already quite sharp, but he may be with 10 years. Reminds something about Ricola. Sure, there is smoke, but it fits in wonderfully, does not dominate. Sweet strawberries sweetened with honey. Gyros meat with Metaxasauce. With water: a little bit dirtier, smoky, now more bad Port Charlotte, smoky salt, slightly fishy, now the character of Ledaig comes to the fore without sinking. As you can certainly get out with dripping H2O addition many nuances.
    • Finish
surprisingly long, it all sounds slow and even here, very balanced.

I have just tasted with https://www.whiskybase.com/whisky/70289/ledaig-2004-sv (barrel 900177) directly in comparison.
Two totally delicious whiskys, but clear differences: The ..175 dark, clearly sweet, round, fat sherry, subtle sweet smoke in the taste, the ..177 lighter, intense kräutrig and spicy, the smoke stronger and more phenolic and a neat spiciness. Great experience.
    • Nose
fat, sweet smoke, campfire, forest honey, sugar beet syrup, sweetish tobacco, leather
    • Taste
incredibly full-bodied and sweet, the smoke comes as bitter sweetness, dark chocolate, cocoa, milk coffee with candy, spicy oak, for the strength downright velvety soft
    • Finish
long, chocolaty, light smoke, sugar beet syrup - that's where your mouth is watering!
