I didn't know much about Dufftown, but this is good stuff. The oak influence is surprisingly mature in here, I would have guessed this to be around 25 years old if I didn't know. And it really makes me wonder how The Singleton can release so many crappy whiskies if there are casks like these lying around in Dufftown. 87/88.
    • Nose
Honey, vanilla, lacquered wood, almond, apricot, apple, tobacco, pepper and a little wax. A few drops of water make me step into a snackbar, with the smell of frying fat all around. That may sound gross but I don't mean it that way at all. It's just a peculiar result of that waxiness in there.
    • Taste
Honey, vanilla, oak, orange, almond, peach, cigar boxes, tobacco, caramel, pepper and a little leather. Yet again, when adding water there are some deep-fried snacks.
    • Finish
Honey, almond, oak, caramel, vanilla, orange, litchi and a little tobacco.

The most surprising malt out of a blind tasting of several Ultimate bottlings. The character of the malt with its waxiness and rich baking spices was unlike anything I had experienced before. While most whisky produced at this distillery ends up in blends, it truly shines as a single malt and has a great price/performance ratio at 17 years of maturation. It's hard not to pour another dram.
    • Nose
A warm, almost nostalgic smell. Like stepping into a French patisserie. No sharpness at all. There's freshly baked cake, vanilla custard and nougat. Then there's the warm spices: Cinnamon, a little bit of tobacco. Some stewed fruits keep the sweet notes balanced.
    • Taste
Vanilla and caramel fudge. Cream. Beeswax. Honey. Oak spiciness. Roasted almonds. Cinnamon. The mouthfeel is incredibly soft and waxy. Liquid dessert.
    • Finish
Fades away softly with lingering caramel and cream.

Given the price, a breath of fresh air amongst all the whisky-price hassle..really a great whisky..!

A great whisky if you consider the price. If you like your whisky. sweet, a little spicey and with all kind of flavours. This is a real gem. Really recomended!!
