Nice introduction rye, subtle and balanced without spikes in nose and taste.

All in all, it’s pretty straightforward and easy drinking – probably very well suited for some nice summer cocktails at that, but as a €25 – €35 ish bottle it delivers a good value for money, entry level rye whiskey experience. From a mashbill containing 95% rye , you might have expected a very spice heavy whiskey, but that’s not really the case at all.
    • Nose
      81 81
On the nose, the sweetness is immediately obvious, with candy and candied fruit. Think licorice and sweet spice notes like ginger and vanilla. Candy floss is there as well, some honey, and hints of (salted) caramel. All in all simple, but very likeable without any signs of off notes.
    • Taste
      83 83
The obvious sweetness from the nose doesn’t immediately transfer into the palate as it’s a bit dry on the arrival. It ‘s only a diversion, really, because soon enough… boom! An explosion of sweetness and spice hits you. Now it’s the licorice that grabs your attention, but work through that and suddenly there’s toffee apples and lots of herbal (green) notes with sage and parsley, perhaps even some thyme. Still nothing that makes you sit back and take note or makes you work to analyze what’s going on, but rather flawless and quite pleasant.
    • Finish
      80 80
It struggles a bit on the finish, where the herbal notes hang around a bit, but now there is a bit of sharpness to it that blocks the gate for what otherwise surely would have been described as (insert Barry White voice here) ‘smoooth’.

      Nail polish, pickle, chipboard.
    • Taste

Simple rye. Sweet woody without significant woody bitterness.
    • Finish
      79 79
      Sweet woodiness, shorter.

Solid Rye in the classic tradition: sweet, oily and spicy. Good PQ ratio.

  7. The_Osprey scored this whisky 74 points Expert Senior

Bulleit 95 Rye (45%). Consumed at Farmacy vegan restaurant, London in Jan 2019. Aroma is honeycomb, toffee apple, caramel in white chocolate. Taste is pretty punchy and plasticky, lots of toffee and vanilla but also big on mixed spice e.g. cinnamon, very punchy and spicy - rough around the edges. Huge flavour makes up for the average delivery. (3.1/74)

Sour-sweet surprise. More complex than expected in this price segment. This bottling currently costs around € 25 and is definitely worth the money for me.
    • Nose
      82 82
Sour-sweet, prominent vanilla, somehow also minty. Unusual and very exciting.
    • Taste
      81 81
Surprisingly spicy compared to the nose. Slightly peppery heat, the acidity is there and compliments the pronounced sweetness well.
    • Finish
      79 79
Short to medium length and spicy. The sweetness disappears quite quickly, while the acidity stays a little longer. The whole thing is accompanied by a hint of vanilla and a fine bitterness that could have come from the burning out of the barrels. Overall, however, the finish cannot keep up with nose and taste.

Taste: Soft with sweet maple and oak notes.
Finish: long-lasting and velvety with oak and caramel notes.

Very interesting. Compared to other rye, it is really a little "sweeter" but very spicy. Tastes great when you're in the mood for it.

Compared to the bulls with and without age information, this does not get better with the time and air in the bottle. Little by little, the sweet aromas fade and the chemical component predominates - 08/13/2020
    • Nose
      79 79
The first impression is sweet and fruity, orange, nectarine, peach oil, coconut milk, Smarties chocolate, black pepper, it remains ethereal but becomes more and more chemical in the glass over time, solvents, shoe polish
    • Taste
      77 77
Strong, very spicy, texture is very oily, honey, a little liquorice, wine gum, black pepper, fresh herbs, bitter orange peel, mint, cocoa, dark chocolate, overall very spicy and aromatic

Very nice dram, 87/100. Refreshingly different than scotch, the sweetness is intense and delicate and is beautifully balanced by the spiciness. In addition cooked fruits - very good.

Very spicy, intense licorice. Acts even slightly smoky. Served with vanilla, cooked fruits (apple, banana) covered with honey. Fruit gum. Candied pears. Perfumed floral, delicate. Dried resin. Honey scented candles.

It has a nice aroma, if you like the sweetness of bourbon. But it also smells strong, fresh, fruity, very aromatic.
Nothing stands out, everything is harmonious.

Not the typical bourbon taste. The tastes ripe, old, ... great.

    Really good!

Spices in the nose, and especially - and this surprises - fruit candies! In the mouth, after a first austere attack typical of rye, with spices, behind, we have a greed with a beautiful fruity that comes balance all that. Easy to drink, very friendly, as well as the final that gives on vanilla and chocolate.

    Enthusiasm 4/5

  30. Gearmailteach scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

I really like it. PLV excellent.
    • Nose
Winner start. The rye is right there. At the same time sweet, caramel, some maple or acacia syrup. Cooling mint notes and also fruity parts behind. Delicious.
    • Taste
Oily-Suess. Vanilla and caramel. Then a peppery-spicy approach of the rye, which becomes dominant and the sweet something in the background. Again maple syrup and oak. Orange peel.
    • Finish
Long and creamy. Oak notes, coffee and rye. Some caramel.

At the beginning I was very disappointed, because this Rye has tasted very alcoholic, slightly fuselig and I thought, it will not be pure.
Now it is open for 3 months and has improved significantly. Nice nose notes on the nose, cocoa and latte on the finish. Overall, it is rather light in the flavors, but pleasant to drink. Still, there are better, but maybe not at the price.

This is good. I like how the spice completely overcome the initial sweetness.
    • Nose
Very sweet. Roasted vanilla, lots of vanilla. A hint of coco nut. Fruityness of orange peel and green apples. Leather cream that turn more into nail polish when the nose get to deep in the glass.

And karloff is spot on with the cola jelly sweets, I like those... and they're really there.
    • Taste
This one grows a lot if you roll it for a while. A small quick sip and it feels a bit weak and thin, but take a larger mouthful and roll it around and it gets more and more creamy and spices start to bite. Licorice and dark juicy cherries.
    • Finish
Medium + lenght, sweet and warm on spices, burnt wood, and more licorice at the end.

  35. p4blo scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

This is a simple, cheap rye, but the drinkability is simply amazing. Spectacular value for money.
    • Nose
Very aromatic and inviting with heavy notes of perfume and flowers, mostly rose petals. There are some green elements like leaves or stems too, sugar, oak shavings and a slightly herbal side.
    • Taste
Sweet, rounded, with gentle oak influence, rose water, vanilla, sugar, again this slightly herbal side. It feels quite thin, though.
    • Finish
Short, initial perfumy hit with roses followed by some spices - gentle pepper, and sugary sweetness.

Nice smooth rye. Sweet, simple and rich, just as I like my ryes. A slight bitterness of burned sugar and some sour pickles keep the dram interesting. Great rye, especially for its price.

A very nice and solid Rye whisky from Bulleit. Highly recommend it.
    • Nose
A nice and sweet complex nose, slices of Mango, mixed spices, a little hint of Korma curry and fresh toast, cola bottle jelly sweets and a large dollop of vanilla.
    • Taste
Like the nose, the taste is just as sweet, and quite smooth. At first there is glazed cherries and some liquorice root, sweet vanilla, red toffee apple and a pinch of pepper.
    • Finish
A medium to long, sweet candy finish with some spice and sarsaparilla on the death.

I must admit that this is only my second rye whiskey, but there is a certain density to the flavour and a distinct peculiarity to the smell, which suggests to me that I shall definitely look into sourcing more of these whiskies. I come from a country where rye bread has been included in the cultural canon, so it is probably not surprising that my palate responds to rye the way it does. Unfortunately, the beguiling characteristics I alluded to above are offset by the feeling that this is a somewhat immature spirit. Good introduction to rye, but here's hoping that this variety of whiskey has more to offer.

I bought it purely for the sake of interest, without any special expectations, even calculated a drop in price. Wanted to taste curious, what gives as 95% rye and I'm very excited. Something else other whiskeys have yet to manage, which I take as a gauge.
    • Nose
What an Ami! Since the eternal glue taste is missing. Very gentle flattering floral and spicy scent nose. Raisins and then something tangible, yeasty. But with time also chocolate.
    • Taste
The whole thing comes very spicy on the tongue, loses nothing.
    • Finish
Cinnamon and vanilla along with all the other ingredients, finest dark chocolate.
