Aged sherry v bourbon H2H 40+ years of age.

This tasting started off with good intentions to compare sherry and bourbon casks of at least 40 years old to see which type came out on top.
Usually I would say I prefer 2nd fill sherry casks and then bourbon cask.
I alternated between sherry & bourbon but comparisons were too difficult so it became a regular tasting, so here are the scores for what it is worth anyway.

    Tasted in this order

    Single grains
Lochside 1964 48 year 41.2% cask 6799 sherry butt The Cooper’s Choice single

    WB ID 53761 - 84/85/86
    Balblair 1969 43 year 41.4% bourbon 1st Release OB
    WB ID 38018 – 89/90/89
    Benriach 1975 40 year 53% sherry butt 7028 Batch 13 OB

A good expressive nose is my first thought, it hints at the power on show.
Rich fruit, smells slightly coastal (I know Longmorn isn't) and the palate from the start needs water it is slightly bitter and almost too strong.
    With water:-
Palate is manageable now, all the flavours are tightly combined, plum, apple and honey with a little treacle and plenty of spice and a little peat.
This takes water very well and it is best when watered down to around 50%.
A very good whisky that packs a punch and tasty with it.

Nose: Rich, complex, powerful, fruit fusion spices, mango jam, almond biscuits, elegant old oak. Sometimes whisky with a high degree of fusion of aromas, it is difficult to tell a certain taste of it in detail, but this is very beautiful. Still opening, a variety of ripe tropical fruits, dried ginger, cookies, apple sauce, honey-glazed barbecued pork. Grease began to erupt, waxy, resin, and mineral oil. I am more willing to give it more time than adding water.

Drink: strong, oily, complex, vitality, influence, warm, sweet, touching, the scent of smell continues in the mouth, various spices, ripe juice, the end rhyme is very long, and the aftertaste is endless.

Overall: It is more complicated than the Longmorn 1972 twa and 1969 GM that I have drunk, and it can still maintain a balance. But the passion fruit of my expectations is hidden, and the expressiveness is also lacking.

    Colour: Gold-old gold.
Nose: Smooth, mellow, with a nice juicy oakiness, a touch of
smoke, on marzipan, some vanilla and some light floral notes.
Taste: Woaw, a very rich, spicy, complex, and quick thick
malt, on vanilla, melon, with some papaya, tangerine, vanilla, and some pina
colada, with some floral notes. The finish is long, mouthcoating, rich, spicy,
fruity, quite smoky and slightly tannic.
General Impression: I really enjoy old sherried Longmorn, but
this bourbon-matured whisky is not only stunning by its 60.5%, but also by the
richness and intensity of its flavours. Lovely.
