An interesting whiskey, the green aromas of the Irish are only noticeable in the background and fit in well. Of course simple without complexity, but tasty, it's fun.
    • Nose
phenolic smoke, vanilla, some green aromas, caramel, some pears
    • Taste
malty, phenolic smoke, some raisins and sultanas, the pears and caramel, the green notes and a little tart
    • Finish
the smoke, the slightly sour and the caramel remain

  3. Jabarkas scored this whisky 70 points Member Senior

Smooth, light, fruity, medium peat. Yet nothing to write home about. For its price it is good though.

A bit of peat and smoke to start with. Followed by hints of salt and iodine. A scent that makes me think of wet earth. Also a scent of cut flowers pass by. At the end some light honey.
    • Taste
      75 75
Again peat and smoke to start with. Some more earth on the palate complemented by an oaky taste. A little bit of pepper. And at the end hints of vanilla and malt.
    • Finish
      78 78
Short to medium. It stays nicely warm with vanilla. Also in the finish an earthy taste together with a hint of warm sand.

Simply one of the best for this price. Smooth and wonderfully smoky.

  10. Matt80 scored this whisky 81 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
Ash, peat smoke, a little one-dimensional. With time there is a touch of burnt treacle.

With water - a little sweeter.
    • Taste
Slightly weak mouth feel. Heavy smoke tinged with salt.

With water - smoke just loses a little intensity.
    • Finish
Medium/long, sea salt, pepper, strong peat smoke.

      With water - finish shorter.

Starting to taste some whiskey. I like the smokey taste. Good for the price.

  13. Floor scored this whisky 78 points Member Senior

Smokey citrus on the nose but a very fruity/honey taste. Could have fooled me by saying it's an Islay

  14. davidloosli scored this whisky 79 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
Fruity peat, green apple, earthy, fondant, herbal schnaps
    • Taste
watery, melon, walnut bitterness, a hint of almond paste, spicyness from mustard, pink bubblegum, smoke
    • Finish
Astringent, bubblegum sweetness, something artificial / chemical, dry smoke

Bang for your buck! Never have i encountered this kind of quality in this price range. Yes it has smoke, citrus, fruits and blaa,blaa,blaaa... But this is just an extraordinary dram for the price! With this one don't go on and on with the details. Just by it and enjoy it!

I must say I was very skeptical about this whiskey, as it is now a "supermarket whiskey" for a reasonable price. But he really convinced me for the price. Nice soft and fruity and above all pleasant smoke. I honestly can not think of a single malt that has a similar PLV.
    • Nose
      82 82
The smell of pest hits you in the nose, then ripe pears and apples and fresh hay
    • Taste
      84 84
Sweet, leather and smoked bacon, very very soft
    • Finish
      80 80
short finish with lots of sweetness superimposed by fine smoke

  18. Xaver did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

    • Nose
Spicy smoke, stored hay in a barn. Something artificial sweetness. Has something of sweetener tablets. Slightly mushy and mossy. A bitter fruit note comes up. Citrus notes are almost nonexistent.
    • Taste
Mild, easy start. Has only 40 percent. Pleasant, smoky mouthfeel. The tart, sweetish fruit notes are there. But also forest. Like taking a deep breath in the middle of the forest. Citrus notes also in the taste, only minimal present. Some fermented fruits. Slightly nutty bitter.
    • Finish
Short to medium. Some bitterness and roasted nuts. Slightly creamy.

The nose on this was very promising and for a moment I forgot why I didn’t like it. The peat profile was very similar to the highland peat on some Scotch whiskies and it worked really well with the sweet malt. But then I took a sip and it all went downhill. The palate and finish were both weak and unrefined.

    Reviewed in my blog:
    https://iwriteaboutstuffilike.com/2016/12/31/connemara-peated-single-malt/
    • Nose
Very peaty, but that grassy, herbal peat one finds in Highland Scotch whiskey. Even when the peat is at it's peak there's a strong fruity note, dominated by peaches all the way through, though it balances the peat quite nicely. Leather. Peaches n' cream instant oatmeal. Woody vanilla. Wood oils.
    • Taste
Bitter wood. Sour malt. Sorghum beer. Dirty, oily smoke. That really bad cheap bubble gum that came with trading cards.
    • Finish
Short. Bitter wood. Sour Grains. Slight woodsmoke.

    Enjoyable session drink. Moreish.
    • Nose
A gentle hint of peat - nowhere near as pronounced as in a standard Islay.
    • Taste
Gentle warmth with the edge taken off by a typically Irish mellowness - reminiscent of Keats' "Ode to Autumn"
    • Finish
If only I was so smooth.

  27. domani scored this whisky 68 points Expert Senior

Better in the nose than in the taste; looks immature and unbalanced
    • Nose
Cold smoke, ash, fruity, tangerine, red grape, cereals, some malt sweetness
    • Taste
Smoky, cold ashes, some malt sweetness, the smoke remains for a long time but is displaced by an unpleasant bitterness
    • Finish
      medium

The potential is recognizable. But it fails because of too little maturation and percents, in the taste disappointing. Without the smoke, it would be pretty meaningless. The finish is acceptable. 71 p.
    • Nose
Soft and reserved, sweet honey, herbal tea, the smoke is associated with grassy notes in the background, apple, kiwi, butter biscuit, fresh bread, grape sugar candies
    • Taste
rather thin and light, sweet, slightly watery, hardly any smoke, no dryness, a hint of vanilla and alcoholic pungency
    • Finish
The finish shows unexpectedly more smoke, sweet and sour in the change, then fades pretty quickly, a little mint behind

Not bad for an Irish :)
    • Nose
The smoke with flowers (heather?) Dominate the smell. After a little longer smell, the scents of honey and oak also come forward.
    • Taste
Said soft and honey sweet in the beginning. Then fruity notes and malting follow. At the end the smoky taste prevails
    • Finish
This is long and warm. The sweetish smoke flavor lingers long and sometimes reminds of vanilla and chocolate.

    Tasted at home.
    • Nose
Peat, smell is best absent. No clear characteristic odors present. No smoke, little vegetable. smells pretty young, little bit of woody smell present. Probably bourbon cask, especially light tones. When I warm up the vegetable tones come out more clearly, he also develops sweeter. Banana and honey, slightly floral. With (small) water, the peat disappears completely and the light floral scents come forward.
    • Taste
Very soft, delicious. Chocolate, oil like. Vegetable, light fruit tones. With water, the fruit will show up again.
    • Finish
Slightly peat taste, falls slightly behind the nose and pallet. Warm flavors, honey and caramel. Maybe a little bit of vanilla and smoke. When deep breathing in, the peat is better forward. With water, I feel that the peat flavors are better forward now. The taste is (even) more superficial. In conclusion, water is recommended for once.

I love the nose, but it’s a bit downhill from there, as the taste doesn’t quite deliver on the promise of the nose.  The finish falls flat.  This is a whiskey worth trying, but I don’t think I’ll be buying it again soon.  I look forward to trying the 12 year old version, though.
    • Nose
Banana, circus peanuts, cut grass, floral, coal tar, and light peat smoke.
    • Taste
Dark, bittersweet cocoa, coal oil smoke, vegetal peat, and perhaps some acidic citrus fruit.
    • Finish
Somewhat short, with only a lingering tar-like peat smoke note.

    [MoM sample Sept ’14]
N: Rubber from sulphur but hopefully not too distracting. Its new arm-band rubber too along with floral malt, passion fruits, peach melba and those Maraschino cherries are on the march again. Over cooked cabbage and spam, [school dinners] and apparently theres some sort of malt buried within there but sadly that sulphur note has trashed the party.. I know what it reminds me of - specifically this Penderyn Madiera WB
T: Thats a bad one, burnt rubber bands - oh dear, what a car crash.

The nose is really interesting and complex, the flavors on the palate are week but yet balanced, the complexity disappears. The finish is poor and reduce the overall experience.

    (Rating interval 76-79)
    • Nose
Smoked meat (sausage) that carefully transforms to banana esters makes this really interesting on the nose. Some grassy herbs and aniseed in the background.
    • Taste
Interesting grassy peaty malt, but really week. Tea with milk and lovely balanced smoke.
    • Finish
Peat water, some licorice and nothing else. This is a huge disappointment.

Nothing special (for peated whiskey), but good experiment with peat and Irish whiskey. Very light whiskey.

Bought this at a whiskey festival in Keswick in the Lake District.
    • Nose
The peat on the nose is not to strong as to hide other smells like liquorice, pepper and for some strange reason a well soiled horses stable.
    • Taste
The peat is strong in the mouth almost like having a victory V in your mouth.
    • Finish
The finish is medium to long with that just had a cigar mouth feel.
